To speak distinctly, and directly into the mouthpiece— A N eminent telephone man of 30 years' ex- perience says that this is the great need in telephoning. Over half the service difficulties would disappear if distinct and direct speak- ing were practised. To speak towards your telephone from a yard or so away, or to speak across it means bad transmission—often wrong numbers, mis- understanding and annoyance. q You can help the service, avoid wrong numbers, misun- derstanding and annoyance, by speaking distinctly and directly into the mouthpiece, with the tips about half an inch from its rim. The choir had prepared spode' mus« io and the hymns, leseone and psalm, were specially selected for the occasion The service opened by singing the To Daum. After the sermon, Kipling Reoession. al hymn "Lost we forget, lest we for. get" was beautifully rendered by the choir. The Rev. Thos, Brown chose as his test Joshua, V, 6 'What moan ye by those Bimini P" The children of Israel had crossed the Jordan . Twelve men representing the twelve tribes of Israel had been ordered to take up, ao they crossed the Jordan, twelve atones and set them up as a memorial of God's deliverance. When their ohildcon iu years after should ask what the stones meat, they would be told the story of God's de- liverance and care of their forefathers Jest in the same way future generations would ask their Canadian parents the meaning of Ypres, Festubert, St. Eloi, St. Julien, The Somme and Viminy Ridge, they would be told of the glor- ious deeds the troops of Cauede per- formed to preseve liberty, truth and right to the world. In the early moru- ing•hours of Easter just when the. Churches all over the land were eeleb- ating the Ressuerection, and the pray- ers of the Chuan were ascending to boaaven the brava Canadian boys sprang up the terribleheights of Vimmy Ridge and broke the German lines But while we rejoice let us not forget the prides paid. Many homes are des- olate. Yet if the parent ware asked which he preferred, a son who had never heard the call or a son who had given his life for the right the answer would be, "It is best as it ie." In every great dead there is and must be sacrifice. The men have made the sacrifice and their names will bait forever in the memory of a grateful posterity. The beautiful sacrifice of Carton who took the place of his friend Evremonde in the ':Tele Two Cities," and went to the guillotine and dies that his friend may live is a type of the great sacrifice that these young men are to.dsy mak- ing for their friends at home, From England The following letter was written by Pte W B Uoldhawkt Dear Sister Hilda Received your letter to. clay and was pleased to hear front you, The weather IS uieo here now but not very pleasant when you are shut in and 1 cannot take the good of it.
