Prevention Of Coal Shortage
This reinter we have had a coal famine
and that suffering has accompanied the
%l;artago of this necessity is undeniable.
The average citizen has a notoriously
short memory, but now is the time to
impress upon him that, is many oases,
the suffering was due to look of fore
sight. In Canada many people buy in
small guantttim' often only one ton. If
for any cause, there is shortage of coal,
improvident house holders bemand that
the coal dealers do the impoesible,
namely, that they supply tuol that is
unobtainable. Whereas, had they put,
chatted their coal In the summer or
autumn, there would be ample supplies
available.
While acme large consumers, such as
manufacture 0annot store a six months
supply, most houssholdera eon, with
their present bine or with enlarge bilis,
store coal to meet their requirements
till March o" April.

Right For the First Time.
One winter a masquerade party was
given at New York, at which praet&
rally all the great musical lights its
the country wore present. Very few
knew who any of the others were, but
in some way Josef Hofmann, the fa-
mous pianist, knew one of the dis-
guised men to be a leading musical
otitic in the city. During the evening
the latter, grasping the hand of the
pianist, said:
"I don't know who you are, but this
hand strikes me very much as the
hand of a pianist."
"Quite right," answered Hofmann,
"and 1t is the first time I have ever
(mown you to be right in a musical
criticism."
And es no one unmasked daring the
evening the critic is still wondering
who said it.
Ruffed Grouse.
Clvflixntlon is abhorrent to the rutted
grouse, king of American game birds.
It seeks the depths of the forests
where the wild grapes and winter-
green berries grow thickest; where
einmps of laurel offer security from
prowling wildcats or foxes; where
mighty trees supply roosting places.
There is no prouder bird in appear-
ance than the x(10041 grouse, none so
mnjestic in flight. The hunter who can
find him and after finding can matte 60
per cent of hits may be classed es an
expert. When flushed tide grouse
springs into the air with a roaring
noise; there L, a Oath of brown ban'llug
itself through the forest, and in an 1n -
stunt the bird is lost sight of.-1lost0n

Caste System Among Ragmen,
Japanese ragmen have a caste sys-
1 tem going from the lowest class, com-
posed of men with no capital, who go
about picking up bits of ixlper and
rags with pointed sticks, to the high-
est class, in which there are some men
who are quite well off. There le an
intermediate class Composed Of men
who can pay for what they get, the
products they deal in depending large-
ly on the amount of mouey they may
have. Among the higher class of rag-
men there are divisions of trade. surae
