Record Yield
What 'might be a now record
for -white bean yield in this dis-
trict was set this month by .Tohn
Berendsen and sons of R. R. 1,
Xirkton, members of St. Pat-
rick's Ronan Catholic Church,
Dublin. The Berendsens averag-
ed 43 bushels ,to the acre in a
10 -acre plot. Over 24 acres the
crap averaged 35 bushels, The
Berendsen who purehased the
farm of 150 acres from Bill Bal-
lantyne three years ago, sowed
their beans early in June. They
put 200 pounds of fertilizer to
the acre. The plot in which the
beans were grown is a particu-
larly fertile one. !Last year it av-
eraged between 15 and 18 tons
of sugar beets to the acre•
Three sons, Peter, Tony and
John Jr. help their father on
the farm, There are eight child-
ren in the family, five of thele
girls. Mr. Berendsen owned his
own farm in 'Holland before
moving his family here four
years ago. Tony and Joanne are
now in Holland on a three -
months trip. Their home is on
Highway 88, almost five miles
east of Exeter. The IBerendsens
have around 40 head of cattle,
mostly Holsteins. Besides work-
ing their own farm they do
custom combining. Doug Cook
of Cook Bros., Hensall, called
the 'Berendsen beans "A once -in -
a -life -time crop". He said 35
bushels to the acre is an outside
standing' yield in this area. He
had never heard of any local
crop approaching 46 bushels.
The beans were of good quality
too considering the wet summer,

INFERNAL PUBLICITY
The Voice Of Tempelrance
Alcoholic drink in 'France and
its "infernal publicity" is at-
tracting wide attention both
within and without the country.
"It (alcohol) is now extend-
ing its field to sports. There is
hardly a single contest which is
not now sponsored by some
:brand of liquor. Bicycle races,
foot races, rugby, track sports,
hall games, -all these contests in
Paris, and I believe it is the
same elsewhere, are advertised
by posters with enormous letters
recommending this or that drink.
Foot races across Paris and road
competitions of cyclists are pre-
ceded 'by brilliantly painted
trucks with loud speakers com-
mending various .brands"
"INFERNAL publicity!" Lit-
tle wonder that France 'leads the
world as an alcoholic nation. In
1955 there died in 'France 4,106
persons from acute. alcoholism
and a further 1,271 from cirrho-
sis of the liver.--Advt.
