Two At Hensall
Two men were burned :by
escaping ammonia fumes, one
severely, and the roof of Sn-
eak :Arena's engine room was
displaced :Saturday as fumes
were released on the bursting
of a eamipressor unit and gas
explosions followed.
Taken to Exeter (Hospital and
transferred Sunday ,to a Toron-
to hospital was Herbert Wei-
gold, 47, of Toronto, a mechan-
ics with Creamery Package Co.,
who suffered burns to his face',
right arm, right side of his
chest and left forearm.
Treated at hospital and re-
leased was Lloyd Moussoau, of
Hensall, arena manager, Who
was with Weigold in the engine
room and suffered minor am-
monia fume effects.
Escaping injury was Dave
:Sangster, also.ef Hensall, chair-
man of the Ilesa l Arena Board.
After the injured 'ren had
been reproved, Reeve William
Park and Constable Ernie Davis
attended at the engine room
where the compressor was still
hi operation arriving just as: the
room was rocked by a flash ex-
plosion which lifted the engine
room roof three inches and dis-
placed the top row of building
blocks.
Reeve Park said both he and
the officer were unhurt by the
initial explosion which was fol-
lowed by :two of lesser peeper-
tions: Gas formed in the roans
by the escaping ammonia fumes
was blamed for the explosions.
The reeve said a head gasket
in fhe compressor' blew olrt Sat-
urday morning and contact was
'rade 'with the Toronto firm,
which made the installation one
year ago, in order to have re-
pairs made immediately.
At mid-afternoon Mr. Wei -
gold arrived and, accompanied
by Moussean and Sangster, made
necessary repairs, However, af-
ter the coonpresso• had been
started, the new gasket Whichhad ;been installed also rlew out
resulting in the injuries to the
men.
Reeve Perk said ice -making
in the arena Wilding was start-
ed last Wednesday and that ice
had been provided to a thickness
of from one-eighth to one-quar-
ter inch when the incident hap-
pened.
He said it is likely that the
ice -reeking will ibe delayed at
least one week. No inuuediatt
plans 'have been rade for re-
pairing the engine room root',
