UNION SPEAKS
Last week we started to dis-
cuss Loans with the last ques-
tion being, "What is the usual
security offered for a loan?"
The answer was as follows: "A
wage assignment form, assign-
ment of expeeted income or
monies receivable, signature of
a co-signer,chattel mortgages,
all these are forms of security
acceptable to Credit Unions.
This week we continue the
questions a n d answers on
Loans.
Q. What is the interest usu-
ally charged by a Credit :Union?
A. ,Government regulations
set the maximum rate of one
per cent per month on the un-
paid balance of the loan. Moet
Credit Unions charge his rate.
• Q. Why should I pay the
Credit Union one per- cent per
month on the unpaid balance of
my loan when 'I can borrow else-
where ata cheaper rate?
A. The facilities of the few
lending institutions offering
money on loans at any cheaper
rate are not available to most
people: Then, too, many people
think they are borrowing more
cheaply, when actually they pay
higher than the Credit Union
rate. The term "on the unpaid
balance" snakes the amount of
interest much less than a casual
glance would show, $100 bor-
rowed and repaid at $5 every
two weeks would cost but $4.83
in interest. Many credit unions
rebate a portion of the interest
to the borrowers. Credit unions
must be available to the masses
of the people, and not only to
the privileged few who can se-
cure needs from other financial
institutions.
Q. Ar
• it Union loans in-
sured?
A, Yes. Loans up to $10,000
to the individual members may
be insured against death or
permanent disability. This is a
boon to the borrower's family.
This insurance is handled by
the Credit 'Union's own insur-
ance organization, the CUNA
(Credit ,Union National Associa-
tion) Mutual Insurance ,Society.
It also handles Life Insurance
and Mortgage Insurance.
Should there be any questions
arising from the above and the
questions and answers that have
appeared before we . would be
only too pleased to hear from
you. Just address your letters
with the questions to Mr. John
Stevens, pres., or to Mr. Elmer
Larone and they will see that
the writer of this column will
get then. Thank you.
Next week we will deal with
the officers of the ,Credit Un-
ion for Seaforth and (District
who have the same duties to
perform as officers in any other
community Credit Union.
