The Ladies' Guild and W.A. M St.
George's Church held their May
meeting •at the home of Mrs. Shan-
non on Thursday last with a good
attendance. Mrs. Humphries presided.
and the meeting opened with the
singing M a hymn followed by the
Scripture reading by Miss Kelly and
nraye.r by Rev. Watts. Business was
discussed after which a Dutch auc-
tion was conducted by Mrs. Waite:
The article sold was a dress scarf
donated by Mr. Shannon. The per-
son reeei•ving the scarf was little Mae
Jaekson. Each member brought a
plant or bulbs. These were all sold at
the close of the mor -ting. Mrs. Shan.
non donated a lovely pair of pillow
easee on which are to be sewn don-
atiene during the year.
The W.A. then held their meeting
with Mrs. Hollinger presiding. Busi-
ness was diecueeed regarding the
Deanery which is to be held in Blyth
in June. The meeting closed with
prayer liv Mr. Watts after which
lunch was served. Mr. Watts tendeee
ed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Shannon
for the en1cYable afternoon spent in
hee home by all present.

Mrs. Grace Lowery Was Born

1:41. at tile age ot it4 years. She
was born in Huron County. Dat. in
Hellett Township. Lot 3. con. it, and
came- wast with her husband in 1831
to make her home in the Carrot
River valley. Saskatchewan. being
one of the earliest pioneers of the
North West Territories,
With a handful of friends they
settled on the banks of the Carrot
River. two miles south of the pres-
ent site of the village of Kinistino.
having come by ox team from Port-
age La Prairie, which was at that
time the end of the railroad.
After settling in the Carrot River
district her home was ever open to
all comers. white or red, for at that
time the Indians were plentiful and.
were always fed before resuming
their Journey.
She watched the country develop
until the first little school house
was erected and the first student
minister came CO their aid. both
coming during the slimmer months.
She was an ardent church worker
and a member of the Presbyterian
Church and later the United Church
of Canada. and it was the usual
thing for him to stay at Mrs. Low-
rie's home. She was a source of help
and comfort to her neighbors during
sickness or trouble and was ready at
all times. day or night, to leave a
comfortable fireside to minister to
the sick or needy in aur part of the
district. Very slowly for years but
gradually settlement came , north.
The railroad came. to Prince Albert.
Things then looked brighter. Medi-
cal aid. eupplies. etc., were easier to
obtain and were brought from Prince
Albert by dog sled, a distance of
about 5e miles. Some 23 years after
settling in the Carrot River district
the railroad came through and from
then an development v,•as more rapid.
Her husband the late C. S. Lowrie
who predeceased her by 24 years was
Pos'ntaster for many years on the
farm, two miles south of Kinistino.
