Racine, the French poet, gave up
writing for 'the stage while still at the
height of his fame, but once more took

Milton's: "Arcades"' was written at
the requese f Lady Derby of Hare-
field. Lady Derby was a generous
patroness of poets. She was the
mother of Lady Bridgewater, whose
daughter and two sons, on their return
Bram some relations, were benighted
in Haywood Forest. Because he had
already written the "Arcades," Lord
Bridgewater asked him to write a
masque, with this adventure as its
subject, and Milton wrote his famous.
"Comus."
One day William'•Cowper was look-

Olney, when he saw two charming
ladies enter a shop on the other side of
the street. He invited them 'to tea.
This was the beginning of an intimate'
friendship that lasted three or four
years, and if it had ended in the mare
riage :of Cowper. with Lady Austin it
would probably haee saved the poet
much ;misery:
One evening Lady Austin called and
found the poet very` melancholy. She
'suggested that lie should ocenny him-

The rough bath towel that brings a
healthy glow to the skin was an acci-

A manufacturer of fine smooth
towelling had trouble with his ma-
chinery. Inetead of the firmly woven
material coming through as usual, the
threads were loose and tangled, and,
from his point of view, quite unfit for
sale.
He set to work to readjust matters,
and after much: trouble got the a.
chine working smoothly. But in the
course of his work his hands had got
coated with oil and grime and: he used
a length of the fealty and apparently
useless fabric to'wipe off the grease.
IIs was quick to note that the rough
discarded stuff did the work much bet-
ter than ordinary towelling, and, be-

he added rough towels tohis stock.
The naw stuff became popular, and the
