between Ottawa and Kingston, were

debating whether a system of barge
and schemer canals of 4 feet draft, or
a steamboat canal of or 9 leaf draft
would be more suitable for the St.
Lawrence eystem, and there was a
time when the advocates of the St,
Lavn'enco"canals were afraid that the
Rideau route might injuriously affect
the St. Lawrence route. Almost a hun-
dred years have passed. since the ad-
vantages of the rival waterways were
S0 warmly debated • and there is no
longer any question aa to the pre-
eminence of tete more direct St. Law-
rence system. While these interior
canal systems may now be of second-
ary importance they nevertheles
serve a very Useful purpose in th
Cana.diain scheme of inland naviga
tion, and, more especially in the mod
ern sections of the, Trent waterway

miles. The `Carillon canal e with a
navigable stretch of 27 miles gives a
route tlirqugh the lake of Two Moan
tains and the Ottawa river, while the
Grenville canal, situated about 5
miles below the city of Ottawa, en
ables the avoidance of the celebrated
Long Sault rapids and gives passage
to a point in the Ottawa river afford
ing nnirnpedad navigation, The RI
dean system connects the Ottawa rives
with the eastern end of lake Ontario
at Kingston. It is 12614 miles in
length with 47 intervening locks.

river frons its junction with the St
Lawrence to lake Champlain (Chainb
ly canal), Montreal to the Internation-
al Bounditry-127 miles. The mini-
mum depth of water is 6;� feet. At
Whitehall, at the southern end of
lake Champlain, connection is obtain-
ed. by means of the Champlain canal
with the river l=ludson, by which the
city of" New York is directly reached.
The total distance between Sorel at
the head of this route to New York
City is 441.miles,

Georgian bay, known as the Trent
canal, comprises aeeries of navigable
rivers and lakes connected by short
canals, forming a continuous system
of navigation for 204 ludas from Tren-
ton on lake Ontario to Eashago at the
northern end of lalce 'Coucitiching.
Nearly a century ago the utilization.
of these waters for the purpose .of

lakes Ontario and Huron was project-
ed by the Imperial Government and
the work initiated. The Babcaygeon
section was commenced in 1333 and
opened in 1835. The province of Up•
per Canada epntinued the work from
1840 to 1667, and later the Ontario
Government built two lodes between

ter locks were enlarged by the Do-
minion Government which has eon -
strutted seventeen ordinary locks and
two hydraulio lift locks, one at Peter-
borough and -the other • at I(irkfielcl.
These. hydraulic lift locks are stated
to he the largest in the world of that
type. The . construction of the all -
river route from Trenton to Rice lake
was commenced in 1907. It is now
completed and is the most modern of
the various units,"
