Alberta Butter for the English 'Market. An`lmporter of butter five years ago and now an extensive exporter, Is the outstanding achievement of the Pro- vince of Alberta. While this situation is no unpleasiug to the Government and the dairy interests at large, it has brought about many perplexing problem in regard to the marketing of the`surplus product. As regards 'the quality of Alberta's butter, it may be said that It is of the highest and is rigidly inspected and graded by Gov- ernment experts. Although prizes for butter won by Albertan exhibitors in competition with other provinces of the Dominion do not necessarily im- ply that all the butter produced in the province is of the same high quality as the winning exhibit, the following results of various dairy butter com- petitions duringthepast few years are of interest: in 1922, the province won 2)9 out of 436 prizes offered, 54% of which were firsts; In 1922, the pro- vince won 227 out of 452 prizes offer- ed, 62.8% of which were firsts. A few days ago in a Michigan town two cases of scarlet fever were re- ported by a citizen. When the state medical inspector arrived on the scene he actually found six cases. This state of affairs showed a gross laxity on the part d somebody, and as a result an epidemic of scarlet fever is now threateniisg that district. The despatch states that the blame for the situation in this Michigan town can be tracedto abject carelessness on the part the local health officer. Sunday School Day, which has just been observed, by more than 30,000,000 scholars and teachers in England, is, a celebration that contrasts with the humble beginnings of the movement. Sunday schools were formally found- ed by Robert Raikes, a Gloucester printer and publisher, who, in 1780, no- ticing some urchins playing in the street on a Sunday morning, collected a number of them and fanned them into a class for private religious in -1 struction. His account of the innovation, pub- lished in the Gloucester Journal, was copied by the London press, and in this way the great Sunday school aye - tem was launched.
