EARLY ROADS IN HURON. Following is a portion. of Thomas McQueen's "Report of the County of .Huron;' published in 185$, dealing' with the 'building of the Huron Road 'and other'roads; Of the Comnteneenteut of the first road le Huron we have the following account' in the life of the late John Galt; first manager of the Canada Company's affairs. Mr. Galt says: "Of one thing, at this time, 1 du trot hesitate to say that I was protect, and with good reason, toa, 1 caused a road to be opened through the forest of the Hertel Tract, nearly a hun- dred miles in length, by which an overland communication was estab- lished for the first time, between the two great lakes, Huron and Ontario. The Goderich and Saugeen road which,' many years ago, wds to have. been a gigantic undertaking of the Government, has yet to be made. It was to extend froth Port Sarnia to Saugeen as close as practicable to the lake shore. The road between Goderich and Bayfield is part of it, though not made by theoGovernment, It is travelable a few miles south of Bayfield, and with some risk ,teams can pass over it for a distance of about fourteen miles northward: of Goderich, It has been useful to tall: about on the hustings at election times, but it has served every other purpose very indifferently. A litre of first- class steamers to ply between Gocle- rich and Chicago, Alilwankoe, etc., is spoken of, and the traffic of the Western States, according to calcu- lation. will be immense. It is clear that if there is a trade or traffic in the Western States and that requires an outlet eta the Atlantic seaboard, the Buffalo and take Huron railroad will command a fair share of it, be- cause it is both the nearest and clearest route, Besides, the list of roads contemplated. to be gravelled, and for which a bylaw is at present published, wi'11 'bring the whole coun- ty within three or four 'hours' team- ing of some depot on the railroad, and in such au extent of rlich agri- cultut'al country, the quantity of pro- duce will snake a very important item of traffic; and to all this may be fairly added a very large amount of pleasure travel in the summer season, induced' by the deservedly re- nowned salubrity and beauty of the banks of Lake Huron. In the year 1852, when Mr. Wads- tvor'th, Mayor of Buffalo, and his friends first proposed to extend their Buffalo and Brantford railroad to Goderich, the united counties of Huron, Perth and Bruce took stock or otherwise became liable for 125,- 000 pounds, but 'through sheet profligate mismanagement and lack of 'bottom, the, Company were un- able to complete the work, and in leasing it to the present English Company the stock of the municipali- ties had to be sacrificed, as the debt on the road was nearly twice as much as the value of the work; but now that there is a prospect of the\road being completed, the people of Huron dm not grumble over their loss, but look forward in hope to the be0efic- ial results of a railroad. 5, • 1i )lir. n t iiia r tv i> • ,. And after all this expenditure of snore than twenty thousand pounds, 'besides some thousands ex- pended by the tenuity council, the Huron Road was just an unmitigated mud road, till within the last four years, when the county council of Perth borrowed money and gravelled it through the whole length of their own county. The remaining 25 tulles is in the county of Huron and is today exactly as it used to be. But proposals are on foot to have it gravelled without delay and we have no doubt that the intention will be carried out next year. It is pretty well graded and turupiked, and in most cases the gravel is quite con- venient, so that the cost will be com- paratively moderate, and being the principal traffic road of the county it may be expected to yield a paying 'The London Road diverges from How pitiable a picture Mr. Drury the Huron road in a southerly di - makes 10 at 0055 diseiatming respon- rti, 14 miles fm of Goecdeiorich, and. the dirostancethe fromtown this sibility for his colleagues, whom he point to the southern extremity of -..JBL, Veritas (with apologies). Such positions are gen- erally conferred' en men of probity and honor and looked up to by the rising generation as ensamples of life. Truly it is to be hoped none of the rising young men will take those men as their pattern. A Fitie Example, The late E. C.
