The September meeting of the Dublin Catholic Women's League was held in the Continuation School on Monday evening with an attendance of 36. The Presi- dent opened the meeting with the regulation prayer, followed by the roll call, The secretary read the minutes of the previous meet- ing which were approved and the treasurer gave a very satisfactory report. Arrangements were dis- cussed for holding of a penny sale in the parish hall on Sept. 23. An interesting reading en- titled "The Birthday of the Bles- sed Mother" was given by Mrs. Lorne Cronin. The guest speaker was Mrs. A. 14, Looby who rend- ered an extremely interesting ac- count of her visit to the Shrine at Lourdes during her recent European trip. She described the Pilgrimage to Lourdes when thousands of pilgrims from al- most every country in the world were present. Lourdes is a town of about 18,- 000 population with 600 hotels and 500 shops. • The Shrine is built in a grotto of rock, and a large church adja- cent. A never failing spring is visited at every season of the year and has been proved mirac- ulous. The torch procession wnen thousands carry lighted candles and recite the Rosary, concluded by Benediction is very impres- sive. A vote of thanks was tendered to Mt's, Leaby, Rev, Dr, Ffouikes also addressed the meeting which was closed by singing of "0 Can- ada", and the National Anthem. Aug. 15th, and 'read to council on Monday flight, Graham Reid, engineer', who designed Seaforth's present sower system, vigorously defends' his plan, and sharply criticizes the lagoon plan advanced by the MacLaren firm in their recent report to Council. Mr, Reid says: Our attention has been drawn to a report published in the press. concerning the development of the sewer system in the Town of Seaforth, the initial stages of which were undertaken - under our supervision. The statement is made that the present sewer must be lowered in order to drain the hospital among other buildings. For your information the following are the governing levels in connection with the Hospital. • Elevation of basement floor, S. E. goner 1015.7 Top of west sewer pipe in basement 1022,79 Bottom of west cesspool 1019.42 Invert of north sewer pipe in basement 1021.63 Bottom of north cesspool 1018.47 Crown of sewer as de- signed for Hospital 1014.0 It is therefore apparent that the sewers as designed will ef- fectually drain the Hospital. It was explained to Council at the time when the initial stages of these sewers were constructed that 4t would be necessary to Gush them extensively until such time as the Goderich St. sewer with its surface drainage could be attached to it to flush the sewers out at time of rainfall, The present plant is sufficient to afford effectual treatment pro- vicletl this is done and the secon- dary stages of the treatment may be added when desired, which se- condary stages will include 'a pumping Station. Reference is made to a TWOS - al for lagooning the sewage which We presume would be con- templated somewhere in the vi- cinity of the riparian lands along Silver Creek. It is to he hoped that the farmers of the area will not permit this as in our opinion. sewage farms are outmoded for Southern Ontario by over 30 years. Sewage lagoons are suit- able for sew -age treatment in wide open spaces such as are encountered in the 'Western Prai- ries, but in our opinion they are entirely unsuitable for areas in Southern Ontario. The matter- is the more conten- tious because similar proposals have been rade at Goderich, Mitchell and Listowel where such installations we are sure, would give rise to greater nuis- ances and more pollution than now exists. Thanking you for your consid- eration, I am. Yours truly, G. G. Reid. EGMONDVILLE Mr. Leo Bristow left for his home in Miami. Florida, after vis. iting his sister, Miss T. Bristow in Egmandville.
