ACHIEVEMENT DAY HERE
On July 3rd 132 4-H Homemak-
ing Club Girls participated, in the
Achievement Day, "The Club
Crir1 Stands On Guard," in the
Seaforbh High School. The morn-
ing program consisted of the
girls judging a class of menus
and giving oral reasons, identify-
ing hazards, and wetting a safety
quiz. After' this constructive com-
ments. were given by the Home
Economists in- order that the
girls might know • where they
may have eis'ored during the,
morning's work.
The afternoon program con-
sisted of work being presented.

Also included in the afternoon
program was the presentation of
County Honours for the comple-
tion of 6 4-11 Homemaking Club
Projects to Elsie Kingma, Huron-
` ---allele; Joan Coyne, Grace Doig,
Sheila Malone, all of McKillop,
and Suane }laugh, Seaforth Dis-
trict. The girls had put up dis-•
plays of their record books,.safe-
ty charts and first aid kits which
they hacl made throughout the
project for display -

The death occurred in Seaforth
on July 2nd of . Mrs. Stahisl'aus
Bertrand, 91, formerly of Mar -
Mora and mother of Mrs, James
Slattery of Seaforth, Mrs, Ber-
trand came to Seaforth about.. a
yearago and had beenin failing
health for several months. ''Her
husband predeceased her about'a
year ago. The funeral took place
at Sacred. Heart Church, 'Mar -
mora on Saturday morning,

annual picnic on. Monday evening
June 80th at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. R. J. Doig with well over

Carter, and the doughnuts were
a treat from Jr. Farmers and In-
stitute members.
New Phone Cable
Extends to Winthrop
Extending the underground ca-
ble for the McKillop Telephone
System to Winthrop, a distance
of 21/4 miles from Grieve's bridge,
is now completed except'for tak-
ing down the last of the old
wires,
The new cable 'has made ft
possible to add extra lines, thus
reducing the number of subscrib-
ers on scene of the lines which:
were overloaded. It has been nec-
essary to change some numbers,
a list which appears in another
eolumn.
MRS. WILLIAM MASON
Mrs. 'William Mason died in
Scott Memorial Hospital about
1.46 ami. on Wed., July 9th in her
87th year. She had been ailing
for the past 18 Months and was.
seriously ill for two months. Born
in Huliett township, she was for-
merly Isabella Margaret Brig-
ham, slaughter of the late John
and Mrs. Brigham. In 1906 she
was married to William Mason,
who precleceated her in 1948.
They farmed in Mullett until re-
tiring to Seaforth in 1944. airs.
Mason was a member of First
Presbyterian Church and of the
McKillop Branch WMS. She is
survived by three daughters,
May, Mrs, William Storey, McKil-
lop; Grace, Mrs. Sam Scott, Mc-
Kiliop, and Gladys, Mrs. Arthur
Alexander, McKillop. Also two
sisters, NIrs. James Richmond of
Blyth, and Mrs. Millie Wetherell,
of Alberta.
Tho funeral will take place ou
Friday, July llth at 2 p.m. from
the G. A. Whitney funeral chapel,
Goderich St. West, Seaforth, with
Rev. J. C. Britton officiating. In-
terment will he in Burns ceme-
tery.
'McKILLOP 4-H GRAIN CLUB
The regular meeting of the
McKillop Grain Club was held at
Seaforth District High School on
Wednesday, June:, 25 at 8.30 pni.
with a good attendance of mem-
bers. The 4-I•I pledge was repeat-
ed by all. Grain pamphlets were
distributed by our leader, Earl
McSpadden. Mr. McSpadden and
members decided that the annual
trip would be to go along with
the clubs in the district. Au ad-
dress by Mac Bolton on "Manage-
ment of the Soil" was enjoyed by
all. Judging was carried out on
classes of wheat, barley, beans.
Meeting adjourned.
PEEWEES LOSE TO CLINTON
On Tuesday of this week the
Seaforth Pee -Weer lost a high
scoring contest to Clinton by the
score of 14-12. The sluggers for
Seaforth were Phillips, collecting
a triple and Patterson, McLean
and Papple each getting a double.

Retiring ; Manager
Honored by. Staff
On Saturday, July 5, the staff
of the Canadian Bank of Com-
merce held a dinner party in
London for Mr, and Mrs. G. C.
Brightrall Mr. Brightrall has
spent the last 14 years of his
banking life as manager here in
Seaforth.
Miss Janet Cluff presented
:Sirs. Brightrala with a white and
pink carnation corsage. After din-
ner Mr. J. A. Murray read -the
following address:
Mr. Brightrall,—As the onca-
eion of your retirement which
you have been looking forward to
for some time, draws near, we
Have arranged this little get- to-
gether as an expression of the
esteem in which you are held by
the staff.
Our association has been long
and pleasant, and we will long
remember that the good fortune
was ours to have had a manager
who was always so congenial. We
will not forget your good hum-
our and ready wit which gave
us many light and happy mom-
ents during the business of bank
routine.
We know that your retirement
is going to change things but we
have confidence that our bonds
of friendship are not going to be
severed.
These few words are not ade-
quate to say what we feeI at this
time so we want to add a tangi-
ble remembrance, and hope that
Mrs. Brightrall and you will ac-
cept this gift from us with our
best wishes_ for many long and
happy years.
Mr. Brightrall very graciously
accepted the silver coffee perco-
lator.
DAIRY CALF CLUB
The Seaforth Dairy Calf Club
was held at William Boyd's farm
with' 37 members. A class of Hol-
stein cows was judged and oral
reasons were given by all mem-
bers. Mr. Doug. Miles, the Agri.
Rep., gave the official placings
and reasons. Wilma Dale thanked
Mr. Myles. Edith Boyd was in
charge of the business and open-
ed the meeting with 4-H pledge.
There:will be no July meeting
but the attendance will be count-'
ed by the members attending ei-
ther the dairy meeting at Mitch-
ell or the bus trip which will be
held in July. The August meet-
ing will be held at Lorne Cart-
er's.

Inducted Here
The induction service for Rev.
3, C. Britton was . held' Friday
evening at 8 p.m. With the mem-
bers of Huron Presbytery presid-
ing. Rey. A. E. Eustace, B.A„ sof
North St, United Church, Goder-
ich, inducted; Rev, Grant Mills,
Ontario St. United Church, Clin-
ton, gave the charge to the min-
ister; and Mr. 1. A. Snider, lay
representative, and treasurer of
London Conference read the
scripture. After the presiding
minister had inducted the new
minister, he conducted him to
the pulpit where Mr. Britton an-
nounced the last hymn and pro-
nounced the benediction, Follow-
ing the induction service there
was a socia] hour in the church
school wheresa lovely lunch was
served by the ladies. Rev. 1VIr.
Elder of the Presbyterian Church
brought greetings. Mrs. Britton
and Mr. Britton spoke a few
words of thanks and greetings to
the guests and members of the
congregation,

Name Delegates to
Cemetery Meeting
Tuckersmith Municipal Council
met in then Town Hall, Seaforth,
on Wed, July, 2nd, 1958, at 8 o'-
clock. All members were present
with tbe Reeve presiding. R. L.
Beattie, contractor on the Carter
Drain, reported to council that
the dram was completed and bal-
ance of payment to him will be
made on receipt of certificate
from the Engineer in charge.
Payment from interested rate-
payers will then be called. The
Reeve and Clerk were authorized
to execute an agreement with the
Dept. of National Defence re in.
stallation of culvert at Lot 45,
Con. 2 LRS.
Councillors Arthur Varley and
Victor Lee were appointed tore-

meeting on July 21, 1958, in con-
nection with the Maitlandbaulc
Cemetery.

McKILLOP
The July meeting of the Beth-
el WAIS and W.A, was held in the
church on Thm'sclay afternoon,
July 3rd with 20 members pres-
ent and quite a large number et
children. The children were be-
ing entertained by the WAIS and.
W.A. and Baby Band.
:firs. Charles Boyd, the BabY
Band leader presided and wel-
comed all to the meeting. Hymn
480 was sung. The 1st scripture
lesson was read by Jean Roe and
the 2nd by Margaret Hilton, and
Ethel Denni9 led in prayer.
The following program was gi-
ven: Recitation by Donnie Dal-
ton; song by Marianne Wildfong
and Joyce McNichol; accordion
selection by Geraldine Dennis;
song by Tune Hi len; 2 recita-
tions by David Wildfong; xecita
tion by - Bruce Glanville; recita-
tion by Stewart Carter; riddle
by Leona Glanville; story "The
Leopard's Whiskers" by Margar-
et Hallen; song by Francis, Val-
erie and Elaine Beuermann; re-
citation by Dennis Beuermann; a
guessing contest by Mrs. C. Boyd,
also a story. After a few remarks
about Dominion Day by Mrs,
Boyd, "0 Canada" was sung. The
offering was received' by two of
the boys and dedicated. Mrs.
Milts then showed some slides on
Japan and also a few of Jean
Mills' pictures of her tour of
England and Scotland. Hymn 607
was sung and the Benediction
pronounced. The children were
•
then allowed to go 'outside for
some supervised games while the
WMS and W.A. had a short meet-
ing. ^Lunch was served on . the,
church lawn.
The Women's Association of
McKillop E.U.B. Church were en-
tertained by the Sebiingville WS
on Thursday.

To Start Monday
Laying Gas Pipeline
Laying the gas pipe luxe be-
tween Stratford and Goderich is
expected to start' Monday, July
14th, according to Union Gas
Company officials.- It may take
a few days before the work gets
fully under way.
A temporary field office has
been set up in Seaforth in the
store recently vacated by Dennis
Electric. It wily, be under the
supervision of the managbr at
Goderich.
Truck loads of pipe for the
gas line or local have been arriv-
ing in Seaforth and are being
stored on the company property
on South Main Street.
Purchase Land for
Children's School
Chas. A. MacNaughton, M.P.P.
for Huron, states that he has
been authorized to announce, on
behalf of the Treasurer of Ont-
ario and the Acting Minister of
Public Works, that uotices will
shortly be sent to property own
ei's on the site of the proposed
Hospital -School for retarded chil-
dren, advising thein, that the op-
tions on their land presently held
by the Province, will be taken
up lir the July 15th expiry date.
01r. MacNaughton says: "Also
I have been requested to say
that the planning- stages will be
entered upon as soon as possible;
but that because of tbe very ex-!
tensive nature of the project, and
the fact that all architectural
and engineering work anti tie•
signing is done by the planning
division of the department, a
start can hardly be expected be-
fore spring or summer 1959."
Annual Picnic of
Egmondville Church
The annual picnic of the Eg-
mondville Church was held at the
Lions Park on Wed. July and. A
splendid representation of the
church families enjoyed games
and sports in the afternoon un-
der the eorieenership of :Bliss Re-
na McKenzie and Mre. Roy Mc-
Gonigle, A bountiful picnic sup-
per with Mrs. E. Stephenson as
convener was enjoyed by all.

the late Wallace Haugh and is
spending a few days with her
friends in the community.
Mrs. Margaret Hayter and son
Ralph are spending a few weeks
with her another, A1rs. Jas. Fin-
layson.
Miss Jessie Finlayson is in
Toronto taking a summer course.
CONSTANCE
Mr, William Dale and Mr. John
Kudelka of Newmarket travelled
by air to Alberta last Thursday,
where they are spending a week
visiting Guernsey Breeders in
that province and showing cat-
tle at the Calgary Stampede.
Mr, and Mrs. Joe Welsh of
Olds, Alberta were iu the village
a day last week and called at the
homes of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Ma-
son, Mrs. Pollard and Air. and
Mrs. Joe Riley, and Mr, and Mrs.
Frank Riley. Mrs.' Welsh was the.
former Eva Cole and is a neiee
of Mrs.' Pollard, and was raised
and educated in this village.
Mrs. Alf. Buchanan spent a
few days last week with her
daughter and son-in-lgw, Mr. and
Mrs: Jerry Cook and family of
Godericb.

under the direction of Rev. T. J,
Pitt and a staff of teachers,
about a hundred children regis-
tered for the course.

The continuation of St. Pat-
rick's Garden Party which had
been postponed the previous
week was held on Wednesday
night with a good attendance.
Various booths and games were
in progress, including a refresh-
ment booth. The drawing on the
tickets resulted 'as follows: 1st
prize, a calf, Eugene Donnelly
wrist watch, Donald Smith, of
Elliott Lake; steam iron, Norval
Elliott; prizes of 55 each were
