Flannery Everyone breathed a little eas- ier yesterday as our May tests came to a close. However we still have our final exams, the third week in June to contend with. The big question now is ,what finals we have to write, Preparations are going ahead for Graduation which is June 22 and for the Graduation Supper which is on June 19. We are kept pretty much in the dant about the supper but every once in a while we come upon a secret meeting of grade eleven who are looking after it. In the sports line the girls have been banished to the baseball field as the boys took over the basket ball court. Mother Sheila is referee for the basketball and Mother St. Paul very bravely of- fered to he referee for the base- ball. Question of the week: When will your new construction com- pany start operation, "Don?. WALTON The C,G.I.T. met Wednesday evening at the home of Marilyn Johnston. A poem was read lir Marion Turnbull. Donna Smith reach the scriptu e lesson, after which )Mayer was offered by,. Marion. The business part of the meeting was conducted 'by Mari- lyn Johnston, 18 members an- swered the roll call. Maly. KIPPEN IIistorY of Thomson Clan at Kippen on lot 27, con. 1, Hay Township. Thomas Thomson sold to Geo. Thomas, a young Scotsman (no relation) a bush farm, lot 27, con. 1, Hay twp, The farm had only an old log house and a very small part cleared, George Ries the son of Geo. Thomson and former Mary Johnston who lived on lot 26, con. 3, Hay twp. (known as Spring Creek). George had two brothers Samuel and Robert; one sister, friary, later )firs, Munn, Young George married Hannah Drover in 1859 and they moved to lot 27, con. 1, IIay twp. where Bert Thomson now lives. They. got much of their meat from kill- ing wild pigeons, though now there are no pigeons (of the kind seen then). At that time they came in such droves they darken- ed the sky. Everyone rushed out with sticks and killed as many as they could. These pigeons were picked cleaned and salted for future use. The life of the early settler was hard. Many a time a bear would jump into the pig pens, kill and 0f1' with a pig, This union was blessed with 8' children: George was born 1861, who married Jessie Moir 1887: Marion born 1863, married John Pinker 1393; William born 1866, married Agnes Dick 1908; Agnes born 1867 married Robert Fisher 1920; John born 1871 married Bertha, Klein 1903; Samuel born 1874 married Susan Taylor 1901; Robert born 1877, married Agnes Hay 1906; Hannah born 1877, married Dave Workman, 1906; George and Hannah built a frame house and cleared most of the land. Threshing was done by horse' power. Robert Thomson, who now lives in Kippen says he remem- bers that many a day he drove those horses round and round on the shaft to thresh. Many were the quarrels people had in those days over one team being lazier than another until finally they got equalizers so each team pull- ed the same. Later carne the steam engine. They threshed- for $1.00 an hour supplying 3 men, steam engine, tank and separator and a good team of horses. T,wo dogs pulped the roots, by what they call the tread mill, After George Thomson died his wife with aid of the boys worked the place until Robert married Agnes Hay in 1905 and bought the farm. He is the only survivor of this family. He had six of a family: (Pearl) Mrs. Clarence Priestap, Mitchell; (Hazel) Mrs. Moyer, Parry Sound; (Dorothy) Mrs. R. H. Cornish, Goderich; Myrtle (Mrs. Bob Stokes), Lon- don; Bert, on home, farm; (Blanche Elaine) Mrs. L. Schnie- der, Stratford- In 1951 Robert Thomson sold the farm to his son Bert, who is living on the farm at the 'present time, He has one son and two daughters, ST.
