The Seaforth News, 1957-12-05, Page 7Do Cats Foresee Disaster At Sea When the liner "Reins del Pacifico" crunched on to a coral reef near Bermuda recently, a eurious incident occurred on board. • As the ilner stuck fast, a cat, which had, voyaged with her for some months, raced up on deck and stared through the rails out to sea. Then, apparently satisfied with everything, she calmly walked over to . a lifeboat, sat down and waited, Few of the. passengers aboard knew that the ship had grounded, the shock was so slight. Yet the at knew; •and she also knew where to go in such a time of danger. This is not an isolated case of a cat sensing disaster at sea long before human crew members. There was a very strange ex- ample two years ago when the Island vessel Joyita was about to .sail from Apia, in Samoa, to Mai- ana, twenty miles away. For over a year an old tom cat had made his home abroad the Joyita; but late on the day of her sailing the cat appeared on deck in an agi- tated state. After roaming around a bit he made a sudden dash down the gangway and vanished among packing cases on the wharf. The Joyita sailed soon after- wards and was not seen again until some two . months later when she was found waterlogged north of Fiji, her crew and pas- sengers missing. The Joyita has since been re- paired, but there is still no sign of her crew or passengers, Did the cat sense danger aboard? If anyone has any doubt about a cat's ability to sense danger before it becomes apparent to human beings let him consider the very odd case of the armed trawler Remindo, which was used to protect shipping be- tween Portland and Cherbourg towards the end of the first world war. The Remindo was on the point of sailing in search of enemy submarines on February 2nd, 1918, when her mascot, a cat • which had been living on board for some months, took a wild leap from the trawler, landed on the wharf and made a dash for safety. The Remindo sailed without the cat a few minutes later; and a few minutes after casting off a violent explosion rocked the trawler. Other ships raced to the scene, but there was no trace of the Remindo except for some debris on, the water where she had been. She had disintegrated completely and no one has ever found out whether she hit a mine or was sabotaged. Ex -skipper of the Tara, Cap- tain R. S. Gwatkin-Williams, has told how he once had a black cat for a mascot which appeared to be quite content until the ship reached Malta, when it became nervous. *Shortly before the Tara was due to sail, the cat jumped over- board into the sea and tried to swim ashore. A boat was ,lowered and the animal was huled out of the water and returned to the ship, although it fought all the way to escape. It was locked up on board and the Tara sailed. About a week later the ship was torpedoed and sank in about eight minutes. The cat went to the bottom of the sea with her. The Stony Point had had a tabby cat as a pet aboard for. about ten months and she seem- ed to be quite content until the tanker called at her last port be- fore embarking on what proved to be her last voyage. Just before the tanker sailed the cat appeared on deck and made a twenty -foot leap to a quay and rushed away in spite of attempts to capture her. The tanker sailed and soon after col- lided with the Ioannis with a serious loss of life. Didi the•cat foresee the collision and get away just in time? Or was it just coincidence? ,LAUNCHING SITE - Newsrroap %cater Tarpon Springs, 'Fla., Where, a missile -launching sta- tion, to -work in conjunction with the Cape Canaveral missile base, will be constructed. They Live Well And Eat Well These Present -Day "Pioneers" By H. R. CALVERT Ed. Note: In this article Mr. Calvert ,concludes the story of his visit to Lynn Lake, the new mining community in the far north. The single mine employees live in relatively small, semi- private rooms in company bunk- houses. The boarding house meals, served by caterers select- ed by Sherritt Gordon, are sub- stantial and carefully planned to give the men variety. Steward Chief Cal Graham pointed out that in addition to the regular meals, the men received a 14 -oz. T-bone steak on Saturday night and turkey or chicken for Sun- day dinner. A typical week -day menu, and one which I personal- ly enjpyed, was a choice of grilled pork chops, pork hocks, beef tenderloin, cold cut plate, grilled halibut, with soup for a starter and butterscotch pie, jello or fresh fruit salad with choco- late cake for dessert and, of course, tea, coffee or milk. The meals are served cafeteria style and the men may return for follow-up portions. The living - on -camp men 'pay $2.25 a day for room and board and since the boarding house operation alone costs Sherritt Gordon ap- proximately $3.00 per man per clay, it becomes apparent that the company subsidizes the men .75¢ a day with, in effect, free lodging. In complimenting Mine Mana- ger I'Doc" Gallie on the obvious interest the Company has in its employees and the community, he commented: "We have our problems here. It's a long win- ter - don't let anybody kid you. It begins to look endless around the middle of March. People here have very real problems. Because of the long winters, fuel bills are high. A lot of oil is-- burned. Sherritt Gordon worked long and hard and finally succeeded in getting the freight rate reduced on fuel. This was a help, •and the kind of help we feel our employees are entitled to. We have had a very real problem caused by the lack of rainfall in this part of the country; to keep the mine ophrating and to supply elec- tricity for the homes, we in- stalled deisel generators which cost a good many hundreds of thousands of dollars. Things are looking up as far as our power situation is concerned because we have had more rainfall in the past few weeks and I hope that very shortly this will mean that we can decrease rates." I told "Doc"'Gallie that I had Leen impressed by the obvious financial well-being of the com- munity, "Doc" looked at me sharply and asked in return it I realized that the cost of living was somewhat higher than it was in Winnipeg. I retorted that I came from Toronto and• it was higher in Toronto than it was in. Winnipeg and the "Doc" just grinned and said it was a well- known fact that everything was better and higher in Toronto. I backed away from the subject in a hurry but just for fun I checked the cost of a few items selling retail in . both Lynn Lake and Winnipeg, and the list shown below proved quite interesting: Winnipeg Lynn Lake Retail Retail Heinz,. Mind you, these modern pioneegs put up with moon- ' veniences and problems which the majority of Canadians can neither appreciate nor know anything about. The sense of isolation, the lack of radio and TV, and the long, cold winters are all very real. But real too is the fact that here the average man can enjoy many things in life which are not possible to the average man elsewhere. He makes more money; he belongs to a community which is truly his community. The reason is easy - the average man at Lynn Lake is not an average man, he is a pioneer. To return again briefly to the Mine Manager, he regretted he could not give me more time, having just returned from holi- days, and he politely but firmly refused my request to go under- ground at the mine; I must ad- mit that I felt he was deeply suspicious of journalists. He told me, however, that the em- ployee turnover at Lynn Lake is less than one-half of the national average in the mining industry, and his obvious pride in the community is best sum- med up in his closing remarks to me which were: "We believe that our (Sherritt Gordon's) effort are appreciated. Lynn Lake is a good place to live. and Sherritt Gordon has spent thousands of dollars to make this so. Weintend to con- tinue doing everything we pos- sibly can to keep it this way!" Well, there we have it! A modern town of 1,674 kind, generous people, providing for themselves a time to work, a time to play and a. time to wor- ship - living together in har- mony and undoubtedly with some inconveniences; but, as more than, one resident said "Despite the isolation - the long, cold winters - the high cost of some foods and fuel, we are happy. You see, we feel we live in a community 'of which we may be proud we have a wonderful 'esprit corps', most of the modern conveniences, more than adequate recreational facilities and' • social activities and we work for a fine com- pany! The prob- lemis mainly economic, Drink- ing water obtained by conven- tional means costs from a few cents to about 38 cents per thou- sand gallons. Turning salt water into fresh may cost as much as $6 per thousand gallons. At the international Saline Water Conversion Symposium in Washington recently, the most ambitious desalting project de- vised was announced by Dr. O. B. Volckman, a South African chemist. Volckman reported a 3 - million- gallon - a - day plant would go into operation next year in the Orange Free State. The plant, which operates on an ingenious electrical filtering sys- tem, will desalt brackish mine water at a cost of only 30 cents per thousand gallons. If it used ordinary sea water, however, the cost would obviouslyy be much higher. ` On the theoretical side, scien- tists at the conference came up with one hopeful scheme. Gil- bert V. Levin of Washington's Resources Research, Inc., turned to biology. Live organisms, he pointed out are used in the mass production of beer and vac- cines, why not fresh water? Levin suggested that algae, which store up salt during the day and release it at night, might prove a more -efficient distiller than more elaborate man-made devices. From Newsweek. ROW ROMANTIC!
