Seaforth Lumber Ltd. SEAFORTH PHONE 47 FEDERATION NEWS By J. C. Hemingway Impressions of a Protest Meeting Q :attended a protest meeting called by Theodore Parker at !Stratford; Oct.. 10th, It was.the protestingest meeting I. ever at- tended, also the most disorderly. The burning desire was to ob- tain avote on the .directional program now in force by order of the Hog Producers' !Market- ing (Board underthe authority of the 'Ontario Farm IPi•odticts Marketing Act. This vote can be 'obtained if :Ontario Hog Producers present a sufficient- ly 'large nuanber of signatures to a -petition to the Farm Prod- ucts Marketing Board who then may request a vote of The pro- ducers concerned. -. One of the speakers suggest- ed that the lawyer retained by the Bog 'Producers received a handsome fee. I am quite.- sure that the foe from the Bog Pro, ducers was much :less per hour than this same lawyer receives in his private :practice. I amalso quite sure 'that the good living he enjoys is largely due to the fact that he belongs to a com- pulsory organization.. I have often heard farmers ,complain of the high 'salaries that school 'teachers enjoy at the moment. This again is large- ly due to the fact that they be- long to a compulsory organisa- tion. The secretary of the school board is obliged by law to de- duct this fee from the :Novem- ber cheque of each teacher em- ployed and foaward it direct to the Treasurer of the Teachers (Federation. The other point of interest to me was the very loud pro- tests •of the 'truckers who were present at this meeting of Hog !Producers. 'What have truckers to lose by this marketing plan? There will be just as many hogs to transport and they will have NIGHT SCHOOL Seaforth District Nigh School EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT For 16 nights from 8 to 10 p.m. except Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, commencing November 7th The Seaforth District High School Board will offer the following proposed courses 1, SEWING—Elementary Course: Selection of material, pattern alteration, shortcut, making simple clothing. 2, COOKING—Advanced course. 3. Truck- ing is usually on a load mile basis so I see .little loss to the tguakei'. There will be some saying in. transportation in the utilization of larger trucks from assembly point to plant...In this modern age I can see no reason why the farmer should be obliged !60` use a large number of 'small trucks. if large ones can haul cheaper: After all the contractor supplies his lien .with ibuilldozers not shovels. 1 NEWS' OF THE BLIND The C.N.LB.'s annual ,operat- ing fund campaign, 'passed the half way mark even 'before the oampaign ended. CROP REPORT 'Good weather has aided the completion of many fall jobs. Fall plowing and the lifting of sugar beets are progressing far vourably with a few fanners picking corn. More turnips have moved out of the county than in any previous year. (Huron County turnip growers .and processors are planning a commercial turnip exhibit at the Royal Winter Fair. The Soil and Ca'op Improvement Association of the County is the sponsoring organization. At a special meet- ing the growers agreed to sup- ply :the turnips for the exhibit and the processors decided to make arrangements to transport the exhibit 'to the Royal and to supply other materials needed. The Voice Of Temperance THE SHATTERED DYKE, "Proverbially, !Ireland is a land that combines the smile and the tear, and •alas what a flood of tears has poured through the shattered Dyke 'of Temperance." "Your P.T.A.A. is a valiant attempt to repair and strengthen that indispens- ably necessary dyke." Thus spoke 'the (Pope to 63 uniformed m'e&r bers of Eire's police force at an :audience he `granted recently. They were all members of the pioneer total abstinence asso0ialtion-a (body half a million strong. In more than one country, intemperance in drink, leading so often to alcoholism, 'has be- come is harrowing menace and an 'actual spiritual tragedy with grateful affection we !bless those who by word and especial- ly example, set !themselves to remove the cause of the evil."
