• TRAIN CUT
Continued from Page 1
The Mitchell station agen
said kis station loses credit for
certain 'business because pass-
engers have to buy tickets on
'the train. They buy a ticket to
Stratford and there might buy
a ticket to the west. Mitchell
loses credit for this "long haul"
traffic. That explained why
ticket sales had dropped from
$200 a month to $120 since pas-
sengers ,began buying tickets
on the !morning train.
'Mr. 03reau said each station
gets ,credit for traffic originat-
ing there. But the fact is, peo-
ple are not using the trains. The
number of passengers carried by
the morning train lbetween
Stratford, and Goderich averag-
ed from as low as 2.9 in 'winter
months to 3.3 in June per day.
J. M. Eckert said he would
favor taking off the two day
trains and keeping the morning
and night trains. A man could
go to Toronto, transact his 'busi-
ness and return home the same
night. iOtherWise he would have
to stay iii the city over night.
Railway officials said the
trains were operating now and
are not being used.
Mayor Miller of Clinton said
people are sick of the slow train
service. Some drive toStrat-
tfhoiele. ,and take faster trains
Speaking of freight the rail-
-way men said last year business
from ‘Goderioh had been good,
this year not so good. Eighty
wheat trucks a day are hauling
out of tGocierich they said, The
trucks are not bound by railway
rules and regulations and can
undercut prices.
(Fitt IJt. Jackson, adjutant- at
'Clinton Radio School, said all
their traffic uses the two trains
wilich are being left on, and not
the night and morning trains.
'Mayor A. E. Robinson of Mit-
chell said we are sitting at the
side of a dying concern with
trains 'being cut off. The Buf-
falo and Lake Huron line had
been the first to open up this
part of 'Western Ontario and it
was a shame to destroy it. Poor
service has been the downfall of
the patronage in this part of the
country, he said.
The railway men said it was
taken away by passengers sup-
porting other means, until ser-
vice is not warranted. Mr. Craig
cited a case where a rate of 20c
to +Montreal on package ship-
ments had been cut to 12c by
trucks, not bound by railway
rules.
A. vote on a motion by 3. M.
Eckert and Reeve Dan -Heuer-
man in favor of the morning
and night trains carried 11-9,
but the railway men pointed out
that many of those voting ad-
mitted they were themselves not
train users.
Fred Peel, manager of Sea -
forth }Shoes Ltd., said he was
content with the proposed
change, providing, express ser-
vice is maintained.
"If the passenger service
can't pay, let's forget it," he
said, "Why should we pay for
the fun of seeing three or four
people riding back and forth on
trains?" he said, ".Let the rail-
way operate where they can
make it pay".
Railway officials said they
had received letters from elect-
ed representatives of Dublin and
Sebringviile, saying they were
agreeable to the change. The
Dublin view was they can take
an early train home from Tor-
onto and drive up from Strat-
ford, hours ahead of the local
train.
'Mayor Graham of 'Goderich
favored retaining the trains.
Deputy Reeve James (Don-
nelly made an urgent appeal
against the change. Outlying
districts have a difficult time
competing against the cities,
and by reducing our potential
the railway is reducing its own
potential.
C. M. Robertson, Goderich,
said the railway is playing into
the hands of busses. One has to
get up at ,5 ,a.m. to take the
early train, but can rise at 7
for the bus. No one uses the
train except those •who have to.
Asked if the decision was
final,Mr. Noel said it was the
decision of the management af-
ter much research. The meeting
had been called to place the
true fact' of the situation before
the municipalities, rather than
have them read the notice with-
out understanding the reasons
for the decision.
A. motion was made by Mr.
IDonnelly that the meeting is op-
posed to the principle of such a
decision being anade, without
first consulting the municipali-
ties. A copy will also be sent to
the local members of parlia-
ment.
At the close, a resolution was
also passed recommending a six
months' delay in the proposed
telephone rate increase.
