who have been visiting Mrs. Smith's

McKILLOP
The W.A. and W.M.S. of Duff's
Church. McKillop. held their regular
meeting at the home of Mrs. Eldon
Kerr with a gond attendance. The
president. Mrs. William Shannon,
presided. The meeting opened by
singing in unison hymn 28, followed
with prayer by Mss. Craw. The first
criptui'e lesson was taken by Mrs.
Arnold Scott and the second Scrip-
ture lesson by Mrs. John Gordon. The
roll was called and responded to by
a text on Thanksgiving. The minutes
of the previous -meeting were adopted
as read. Hymn 268 was sung and the
last chapter of the study book was
ably given by Miss Vine Murdie. after
which Mrs. Russell Dorrance favored
the ladies with a well rendered solo.
A poem was given by Mrs. Chester
Henderson. Hymn :1115 was sung.
Meeting closed by repeating the
Lord's prayer, and singing God save
h++ King. Lunch was served by the
hostess Mrs. Eldon Kerr, and Mrs.
Harvey Mellwain, .Mrs. GPI. Wheat-

Rather than hold the annual Flower
Show the Brucetield Horticultural
Society will arrange a "bee" to beheld
at the Brueefield cemetery in Stanley
township to improve the grounds,
The directors of the Horticultural
Society met in the basement of the
church ea Frida.y eyening and decid-
ed to cancel the flower show this
year owing to a recent dry spell and
made plans for isiiproving the Bruce-
field cemetery, which is one of the
oldest cemeteries in the district and
being without any official board is in
need of attention. The township fast
year provided a new fence around the
cemetery. Any persons interested in
the upkeep of the grounds -who can
give assistance it will be appreciated.
The Horticultural Society plan to
hold the "bee" sometime during the
first week of October and any men
who can help with the work ,are ask-
ed to come.

Mrs. G. Beacons of Listowel expects
soon to leave Bayfield, where she has
been since May 20 as nurse to Miss
Mary Taylor, who will miss her very
much for she certainly bus been very
faithful to her duties. Her many
friends that she has made will also
miss her.
Mrs. Margaret Cleave has not been
enjoying the best of health lately.
Mrs• F. McClymont and children
Mary, Ivan, Margaret and also her
aunt, Mrs. K. Shannon, returned to'
their home at Varna after spending
the last two weeks at a cottage at
Reynold.
Miss Mary I. Huether of Brussels
has been eirgaged as teacher of S.S.
No. 5, Stanley, and commenced her
duties on Tuesday.
Babylon school has been closed as
there were only 4 pupils of school
age in the section: these are being
takers to Varna school.
Mr, and Mrs. Bruce McCliuchey
spent the week end with Mr. and
Mrs. Lees Saunders in Detroit. Gordon
Saunders, who has been here for
some weeks, returned to the city
with them.
Miss M. Lovett of Londesborough
spent the week end with Mr. and
Mrs. W. Hayter and family of Baby-
lon Line.

Mr. and Mrs, James Early. Miss
Mary Joan Early and Miss Frances
Early of Detroit were holiday visitors
at the home of Mrs, L. J. Looby.
Mr. L. Thompson of Shelburne
spent Sunday with Joe Looby.
A large group of neighbors and
friends assembled to pay a last trib-
ute to Mrs. Mary Rowley, whose fun-
eral was held at St. Patrick's Church
on Friday morning. Requiem mass
was celebrated by Rev. Dr. Ffoulkes
and Miss Mary Beale presided at the
organ. Many spiritual tributes 'were
received as well as floral offerings.
The pallbearers were Edmund
()Hearn, Michael Nagle, Thomas
Milyneaux, James Krauskopf, Wal-
ter Carpenter and Ted Hickey. Those
attending the funeral from a distance

home in Chicago after a month's vac-
ation with Mr. and Ms's. Alex Darling.

Miss Mary Moore returned to Tor-
onto on Monday after spending two
weeks' vacation with her brothers,

The W.A. and W.M.S. are holding
their monthly meeting at the Monte of
Rev. and Mrs. Menzies at Londes-
boro on Tuesday, Sept, 12. All the
ladies of the congregation are re-
quested to attend, as plans will be
made for our fowl sapper. Please note

Miss Donelda Adams has resumed
her duties as teacher an the staff of
the Clinton public school. Miss
Adams was successful in obtaining
her certificate in elementary vocal
music as taught in public schools,

Mr. Harvey Nott, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Bernard Nott, of Hullett, motor-
ed to London this week to begin a
business course in the London Busi-
ness 'Institute.

The meeting of the Staffa Junior
Institute was held at the home of the
president, Margaret Allen. The roll
call, "A form of politeness I especially
admire,' was answered by 21 girls.
During the business period a commit-
tee
ommittee composed of Isabel l rake, Mary
Agnes Hamilton, Jean Burns, Kath-
leen Colquhoun and Anna Hamilton
was appointed to arrange for a wein-
er roast. It was decided to purchase
a hot plate and kettle. The topic was
given by Grace McLauchlan on "Eti-
quette." Isabel Drake read a poem.
Anna Mae Kay gave a tap dance
number. A baby picture contest was
conducted by Jean Miller. Lunch was
served by the hostess, assisted. by
Agnes Miller, Isabel Templeman, Ma-
rion Drake, Gladys Miller.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter O'Brien visit-
ed in Toronto with Mr, and Mrs, C.
O'Brien.

Western Fair, Sept. 11th -
16th, 1939
