THE KING'S NEW CAR
Britain's First Motoring Monarch as
a Driver
London. -A week or two ago you,
might have found in a certain Cov-
entry motor -car tnanufacturer's del-
ivery ledger the. following entry:
"Delivered to His Majesty King
George VI at Buckingham Palace one
Lanchester standard saloon."
Just below yeu 'night have found
another similar entry:
"Delivered to .Tehn Smith. at New.
caetle-on-Tyme. one Leneheeter stan-
dard saloon."
Juet a couple of simple ledger en-
tries about nee perfectly standard
British ears, yet they give an exam
picture of the present popularity of
motoring among all classes of the
community in Great Britain.
The King's new ear is the 40115 to
be delivered to Britain's reigning
monarchs since King Edward VII
took the first. a 6 lap. model, in 1899.
Nor is the King's interest in motor-
ing confined to relaxing in the luxur-
ious upholstery of the back seat 111a
stately Royal car. He is a very keen
driver and the first real motoring
monarch on the British throne.
His grandfather was not so very
keen about motoring. because, after
all, it was a difficult and nerve-rack-
ing sport in those pioneer dais.
when a man with a red flag was sup-
poeed to precede the "eviesneelliag
monster."
George V appreciated the comfort
and oonvefll4n f motoring but
was never to drive a car. while. the

he prefers 15i'i travel at a moderate
pace and to enjoy the passing seen-
ery. carefully observe( the 34
m.p.h. speed limits in built-up 51015.'and has a friendly wave for the
driver who lea: him slip through a
traffic jam.
The King is especially friendly to-
wards any car carrying the Order of
the Road badge. He is a keen mem-
ber of this organization of motorists
who have driven at least 10,000 miles,
There is nothing very exceptional
about the King's favorite saloon, but
the State cars, of which there are
about 40, are very carefully planned
and built. They incorporate a fluids
flywheel device, which preveuts are:
possibility of the engine "boiling"
when the cars have to travel for
long distances at a crawl. The fluid-
fiyv,theel automatically semis the car
into neutral when a more orthodox
model would be grinding alms in
first gear.

work are submitted to the King for

Theoyal cars used for the
King's household can be recognised
by "finned" radiators, which are now
always black, their brass lamps, and
the maroon coachwork,
The Royal State cars (thole used
only for State processions) are die.
tinguiehed by the absence of licence
plates and registration numbers; but
the King's own private car has a re
gistration number and has to be li-
censed in the usual way.
All the State ears have a particul.
arly high roof to enable the Ring to
wear the tall military ani other
headeireeses for official oeeasims,
and above the centre of the •wind.
screen is a small blue light. This en-
ables the police to recognise, the car
quickly after dark and so nasten its
progress through congested streets.
A special motor horn, with a disting-

saine purpose, but so few policemen
have ever heard it that the cha
feurs now refrain from using 11.!
The rear windows are carried beak
as far as possible so that their Maj.

lean forward, and extra equipment in-

"secretariat" concealed in the eentre
