Smale. Mr, Harold Sheppard of Toronto visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John Sheppard. Mrs. Laurence Barnham and child- ren of Exeter visited last week with the former's . parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Moir. Mrs. Stewart McQueen, who under went an operation recently in St. J'o- sep'h's Hospital, is recovering and was able to return home •this 'week. Mr. Fred Corbett, who has been ill for several ,non'ths, 'suffered a heart attack last week and was eon- fined to his room fora Sew days. His many friends will be pleased to hear he is somewhat improved at time of writing. Mrs. Fenner of Montreal as visiting with her sister, Mrs. Alfred Taylor, Mr. and Mrs, N, E. Cook are holi- daying at their cottage at Wasaga Beach. The United Chureb Sunday School picnic was held on Wednesday at Turnbull's Grove. Misses Goldie Cross, Ruth Brook and Elva McQueen are attending summer school at Goderich this week. Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Smillie of Tor• onto are visiting with Dr. I• G. Smil• lie• Mrs, Smillie and Miss Jennie Murray. Mr. N. E Cook bas purchased the property on Main street recently oc- cupied by Mrs. Al. Ryckman. We un- derstand Mr. Cook intends making some extensive improvements. Mr. Thos. Shaddick is visiting at the home of his son, Mr. Wm. Mr. Douglas Sangster is assisting at the C.N.R: station in the absence of Mr. Donald Walker, who was one of the few cbosen to attend militia training camp at Pine Bill for two weeks, Mrs. Hannah Workman very pleas- antly entertained her group of the Ladies' Association of Carmel Church at a, tea last Tuesday evening, Rev. R. A. Stook' conducted the service in the United Church on Sun- day and the choir sang an anthem, "Thine Is An the Glory," and a quar- tette comprising Misses Mary Good- win, Elva McQueen, Goldie Cross and Ruth Brook sang "The Lord Is My Shepherd." Mrs. R. J. Ferguson of Minneapolis, Minn., es the guest of her sister, Miss Emma 'Johnston. Mr. and Mrs. E. Krantz and babe of Shakespeare, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. E. Doerr. Mr, .and Mrs. Wm. McLean and fa- mily of Hamilton visited with Mr. and Mrs, 'John Passmore on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. A. Murray of Hamil- ton, visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John Passmore. Miss Mary McAsh, who has been visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs, MacKenzie in 'Brucefield, returned to her hoarse here. Thompson Family 'Reunion,— The first annual reunion of :the Thompson family was 'held at the Thome of Mr, and Mrs. !William Alex- ander, H'ensall, on Saturday afternoon, `July '8th. These are descendants of the late George Thompson and his wife, Agnes Johnson, who 'came to Canada and settled near Drumbo. There were some 'farty"two persons in attendance from London, Auburn, Dublin, Parry Sound, Brucefield, Hensall `and Kip- pen. During the afternoon spouts were held, Following a picnic supper ,the flection of officers took place with •bhe following slate of officers::President, Mr. 'Norman; vice president, Miss Hazel Thompson; sec.-treas., Miss Mabel Workman; oanvener of •sport committee, Mr. Lorne Manson; assist' ant, Mr. Lloyd Thompson; convener cifana r committee, a r e p g mate Mrs. Herb Britton; assistant, Miss'Doris Alex- ander. It was decided to hold the next ennuzi reunionat the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Britton, Dublin. The eldest person present was Mrs. Eliza Thompson, 'aged 94, and the' youngest person .present 'was Marion Agnes, 2 month 'old daughter of Mr, and Mrs. John Pepper. Mr. James Moodie mov- ed a hearty 'vote ,of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Alexander for their hospitality. Decoration Service Held.— Decoration service was field on Sunday at 2,30 o'clock by the 1.0.0.F.in conjunotion with .the Exeter -Hen - sat ibranoh 'of the Canadian 'Legion, A :short service was 'held .at the cenotaph conducted by Rev. R. A, Brook of the !United Church. ,and Rev. M. A. 'Hun't of St. Paul's Anglican 'Church. The Last Post and Reveille were. sounded by Bugler Fred Beer. The Hensen Citizen's Band was in -attendance and played 'hymns. The service was .con- tinued at Hensall 3Union 'Cemetery and McTaggeet's cemetery, where Rev. R. A. Brook and Rev. M. A. Cross presided • at the opening part of the program at the missionary meeting held in the Unit- ed Church on Thursday afternoon. The Mission Circle presented a very splendid program which waspresided over by Miss Mary Clark. The Scrip. ture was read by Miss Nellie Fee and Miss June Sundercoelt led in prayer, A very interesting reading was given by Miss Mary Goodwin' The topic was given in different, parts led by Miss Mary Clark, assisted by Misses Marg- aret Tudor, Elva McQueen, Pearl Har - pole, Goldie Cross, Kay Drysdale and Ruth Brook. Miss Gladys Passmore was pianist, Miss Pearl Harpole, who leas re- ceived her diploma for the secretarial course, 'which she completed at Clin- ton school of commerce with a stand- ing of 90 per cent, has accepted a position at the Zurich creamery and commenced her duties there last week. Arnold Circle Holds Picnic— The Arnold Circle of Carmel Church held their annual picnic at Bayfield last Wednesday afternoon. During the afternoon sports were indulged in with prizes being awarded to,- first, Miss Beryl Phaff, second Mrs. Roy Bell, and third Miss Irene Hoggarth. A very sumptuous supper was par- taken of and a special feature at the supper hour was the presentation of ahandsome umbrella to Mrs. Young, who is moving to Fergus in Septem- ber. The presentation was made by the president Mrs. Roy Bell, who ex- pressed on behalf of the Circle, the appreciation and co-operation of Mrs. Young during the years she had been laboring with them. Mrs. Young made a very fitting reply. Rev. W. A. Young conducted serv- ice on Sunday evening in Carmel Presbyterian Church, The choir sang a beautiful anthem with Miss Irene Hoggarth taking the solo. The annual Sunday School picnic of Carmel Church will be held at Turnbull's Grove on Wednesday; July 26th. VARNA The members of the'L.O.L. formed on the square and gave the shut-ins a few tunes in an elegant manner be- fore leaving 'for Brussels. We are sorry to import Mr. Nelson Reid had the misfortune to break a bone in his ankle. Mr. John Dennison of Wlingham called on his brother Saturday. MURRAY DIES FOLLOWING -ACCIDENT Mrs. James Murray of Seaforth re- ceived word of the death of her sis- ter, Mrs. Robert Kenny, of Ellice township, who was fatally injured early Monday. Mrs, Kenny died on Tuesday morning at the home of hes' mother; Mrs. Julia Jordan, concession 7, Logan, where she was taken fol- lowing Monday's accident, which oc- curred on the Logan -Ellice township line. The deceased celebrated her 50th birthday last Saturday. Whether Ml's. Kenny jumped from the wagon or was thrown from it when the horses bolted at a roll of fence wire along the side of the road, Mr. Kenny cannot say. After the horses were frightened they galloped along for some 60 rods before he got then under control. He had heard bis' wife, who was standing behind him, call to him to "hold the horses," a minute before the accident which threw her under the • rear wheels which passed over her body. The unconscious woman was pick- ed up and taken by automobile the remaining half mile to her mother's home. Mrs. Kenny rallied shortly af- ter. the accident which happened at nine o'clock, and was able to recog- nize her another, daughters, brothers and husband. Later she lapsed into unconsciousness and died about sev- en o'clock Tuesday morning. She suffered a fractured skull and it is also believed that her neck was broken. There survive her mother, Mrs, Jordan, Logan; her husband; three daughters, Olive, Mary and 'Geraldine; five sisters, Mrs. Peter Cassidy, Kin- kora; Mrs. James Murray, Seaforth; Mrs. John Ruston, Dublin; Mrs. Vic- tor Rustin, Logan, and Mrs. John Connolly, Mitchell, and five brothers, John, Thomas and Charles, at home; Joseph, Ellice township, and Michael, Mitchell. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Carnochan of Garden City, Mich„ Mrs. Evans of Galatia, Ill., and Mrs, Barton, Detroit, spent the week end with relatives, returning Sunday evening, taking Mrs• Myrtle Carnochan back with them to Eloise, Mich., as she had been spending- her holidays in this vicinity.
