Pupils and Teachers
Gather at Old School
Cup From Pioneer Days Re-
turned to Family—Was Lost
for Many Years.
Fortner pupils from far and near
gathered at Cromarty school on Fri-
day last when a very successful re-
union was held. The teacher, Mr.
Ross MacKay, and committees, pro-
vided a day that will long be remem-
bered, when old friends had an op-
portunity of meeting each other
again, In the morning class was held
in the school for old pupils and tea -
the afternoon an
tea-
chers. s I n excellent
program was provided followed by
dancing at night. Rain somewhat int-
erfered with events at times.
Me. Herman Speare of Toronto, an
ex -pupil, presented the Section dur-
ing the afternoon's program,with a
large Standard Dictionary, and re-
ceived the thanks of the Secretary.
It is a large, beautifully bound „vol-
ume.
A. unique feature of the program
was in a presentation, or rather a
returning of a silver cup, to Mrs.
Bessie McKie of Kitchener. This cup
had been won by Mr, James Mac-
Tavish, her father, in 1868, and was
presented to him by the Reeve of the
Township, Mr. Thos. King, for being
the first matt to have five acres of
land cleared and ready for Spring
sowing in Hibbert Township. This
cup somehow was lost, and picked up
by Bruce Balfour in Wm. Kay's
bush. After considerable polishiug
the inscription revealed to whom it
was given. It was not until Angus
McDonald, a veteran of ninety years
who was present at the original pre-
sentation, told the whole story, did
its significance become blear. Mr.
MacTavish lived on the . corner
across from the school, the farm
now occupied by Mr, David Bruce,
