Council Meeting_
The last regular meeting of the
Villaage Council was held last Thurs-
day evening, Dec. 15, as per statute,
in the council chamber at 8 p.m, with
all members 'Ibeing' present, except
:Councillor G. E, Brock who suffered
a tstrelice recently. Minutes of the last
'meeting read an.d adopted. A: large
delegation from the. Chanaber of
.Commerce appeared asking for it don-
ation in aid of the Christmas' tree,
Also discussed •the :appointment of a
hall time employee for policeman,
caretaker and. several otherduties,
same to lbe considered later. Twitch-
ell -Shepherd, that We grant Cham-
ber of Commerce fifteen dollars tow-
ards the Christmas tree. Carried. The.
Reeve and, Clerk reported the ad:vice
received inToronto about :trees end
tax ,exemptions. The Tax Collector
reported the taxes, total collection
$10,518421, and $9;372:111 as cash and
$1:1518.00 as ,prepayments, discount al-
loWed $514,40 and the arrears as 'being
$1088411. He was instructed to pro-
ceed, with the collecting as per bylaw

extend the time for the .collector's
roll to be turned to February '6:, 1909,

The Yotiog Peo:ple's .Union of
'Ohiselburat United Church met on
ToesdaY evening at S. p. M. with a
very ,gadd attendance, Miss Beatrice
Drover presided over the • following
program, .which opened by singing a
hymn followed bY prayer by Rev. E.
A. Brook. Miss Margaret Treffry
played a delightful piano instrument-
al, Rev. R. A. Brook then favored the
young people with a beautifel solo, A
Christmas reading was given by ,Miss
margaret Treffry. Mouth organ sel-
ections were played by Gairclon
Wright, and !Percy Wright played
the guitar. The president, Miss Bea-
trice Drover was presented ' with a
casserole and a large glass platter by
Mr. Benson Stoneman and the ad-
dress \aas ,read by Miss Ruby Dal-
rymple, Contests were then indulged
in. Rev. R. A Brook presided over
the election :of officers with the fol-
lowing results, Preaident, Miss Jean
Vernier; vice president, Mise Verna
MacLean, secretary, Miss Earla Tref-

Sunday School Teacher Honored—
On Monday evening the members
of St, Paul's Anglican Church met
in the .basement for a social evening
and their annual Christmas concert
and: tree. At :the close of .the program
which :consisted of carols, recitations
and pantomimes Miss Amy Reynolds
was , presented with a !heautifol tri -
light .floor lamp and a magazine rack.
Miss Reynolds although completely
taken by surprise thanked the memb-
ers for their kindness. The following
address was read by Miss Mary Fee,
Dear Mis Reynolds: We •eannot let
another Christmas pass without rec-
ognizing your efforts in the work of
the Sunday School. You have been
most faithful and untiring in your :eff-
orts to promote the welface of our
Sunday School. Not only in the work
of the Sunday School have you shown
your zeal and faithfulqess but also in
the work of the church :and the org-
anizations of the church. We do wish

Mr. J.' W. Ortwein 89 Years Old -
1j, W. Ortwein, one of Hensall's
most prominent residents, will cele-
brate his eighty-ninth birthday here
on Christmas day, Kr. Ortwein is a
pioneer merchant of this .village and
has .been reeve and .cooncillor. He
was born in Tavistock, and went to
Heidelberg as a youth and there he
became postmaster, telegraph opera-
tor and store owner in turn. 1 -le • 'has
also owned :stores in ,Zurieb and Sea -
forth. At present Mr. ,Ortwein is pre-
sident of the Bible Society' of West-
ern Ontario, and has been sunerin-
ten:dent of the United Church Sunday
School for twenty-three years. He fa
hale and :hearty and ,drives 'his own
auto. Many Of the members of the
family nili come (from distances to
celebrate his birthday on Christmas
day with him and his wife.

Miss Mary Thompson of the staff
of the Bank of Montreal, who has
been holidaying at her home in Sea -
forth, has returned :to her position
here.
Mr. and Mrs, Royce 'Welsh of
London visited on Stu:1day with rel-
atives here.
Mrs. Fred Paters is visiting in Tor-
onto with her son-in-law and .daugh-
ter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold SimpSon.

Arnold Circle •Elects Offificers—
' The Arnold' Circle of Carmel Pres-
byterian Church held their regular
monthly meeting- at, thehome of Mr,
and :qrs. E. K....Hutton, Rxeter, on
:Friday eveMng, with a very good at-
tendance. The interiot of the home
was bea.utifully.adecorated a brightly
lighted Christmattree added greatly
in keeping ,Christnas. The
president Miss Mabel Workman pre-
sided, over .the meeting which opened
by singing the hyrrin, "10 Little Town
of Bethlehent," ,followed by prayer by
Miss AVorlcman. Mrs, Mac' Dougall
read the scripture :from the second
Chapter of Luke's gospel, The min-
utes of the previous meeting were
read and adopted. The roll was called
and answered by something you'd
like for Christmas. The business was
then taken ,up and Miss Alice Pfaff
gave the treasurer's report and Ifiss
Hannah Murray gave the secretary's
report, both reports being very cred-
itable, The offering was 'then taken,
Mrs, .Roy MacLaren then ,gave a
paper on "The Legend of the White
Gifts." Two carols, "It came upon a
midnight clear," and "Holy Night,"
were then sung, Mrs, E. K. Hartton
presided over the election of offlaers
with the following offibera elected:

interesting paper on "Making our So-
ciety a Success." The 'hymn "Harkl
The Herald Angels Sing," was then
sung and the Lord's prayer repeated
in unison. Dainty refreshments were
served by the hostess and a hearty
vote of thanks tendered Mrs. Hutton
by Miss Mabel Workman.
Mr. John Cunningham of Moore-
field visited last week with Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Fink.
Mrs. H. Britton and daughter Joan
of Dublin visited on Sunday with the
former's mother, Mrs. D. Workman.
The many friends of Mrs. Alf Tay-
lor will be sorry to bear she is con-
fined to her home through illness.
The annual Christmas concert ,of
the Presbyterian Sabbath School will
be held in the .basement of the :church
on Thursday evening, Dec. 2121nd at S
iam. A good program is being prep-
ared and everyone is welcome.
The many friends of Mrs. Hannah
.Patterson will regret p hear she is
confined to bed. She had the misfor-
tune last week, while going about the
house, to fall. Fortunately no hones
were :broken but the fall was quite a
shock to oue in advanced years. Mrs.
Patterson 4k in her 88th year.
A Chltmas concert and pageant,
"White Christmas" will be presented
in the United Church on Friday, Dec.
23rd at 4 pan. by members of the
Mission Band under the very able
leadership of Miss Kay Drysdale.
Special Christmas senvices will be
held in Carmel Presbyterian Church
on Sunday. The choir will sing spec-
ial Christmas numbers at the morn -
Mg service :an:ci in the evening they
will present the cantata "The World's
Redeemer." The choir under the
leaderahiP of Mr. W. A. MacLaren,
have spent some time in preparing
this cantata.
The annual Christmas concert of
the public school will be held on
Thursday afternoon and everyone is
welcome.
:Christmas services will be held in
the United Church on Sunday and
the choir will sing special numbers at
the morning serviee. In the evening
pageant, '5 13ring You Good Tidinga"
will be presented by members of the
Sunday School assisted by the choir.
A largeplatform has been erected in
the iteditorium for this pageant and
it ia hoped there will be a large crowd
present on Sunday evening. The
scenery is being arranged by Mrs. M,
Drysdale an:d the .costumes designed
by Mrs. R. Broderick,
Santa Claus Coming To Town --
Every :boy and girl in the .commun-
ity is invited to be present at the
T-Tensall Christmas Tree at the Town
Hall on 'Friday afternoon. It is ex-
pected that Santa Claus will arrive
about 2:30 p.m. to distribute the gifts
at the tree.
Celebrate Golden Wedding—
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Deihl of Stan-
ley Township, near Clinton, :celebrat-
ed their golden wedding anniversary.

was very attractively decorated with
golden mums. Mrs. Deihl wore a
flowered crepe gown. Pouring tea

Mrs. Diehl have three :children, Mrs,

When Struck by Falling Limb—
A shadow of gloom was cast over
the community on Tuesday upon
hearing of the sudden passing of Mr.
Paul Boa who was struck on the
head :by a falling al i nab while cutting
logs with his br.other Mr. 'Win. Boa.
Mr. Boa had kpent most of his life in
Ole bush cutting timber. 5 -Te was in
his 50th year and has :resided for the
past number of years on the London
Road South, He is survived by two
brothers, Wm. Boa, London Road,
anal Rev. Andrew .Boa, Norwich, .and
four sisters, Mrs. George Stnale,
Hens:all, Mrs. Wrn, Halt ,and Mrs.
Sam Hall of Huntoon, Sask., and
Mrs. Ed Smale of Benson, Sask. The
funeral will be held from the. home -of

The annual nesting of the electors
of the Municipality of the Township
of McKillop will be held in Winthrop
Hall on Monday, December 36th,
,1935!„ for the purpose of nominating
candidates for Reeve and Council for
the year 1,939. Nominations will be
received from the hour of 1. p.m. to
2 p.m. ln the event of more persons
being nominated than are reordred
to fill the several offices an election
will be held on Monday, January 2:rid,
1939. Polls will :be open from 12

filled to overflowing, the Young Peo-
ple's Union of Goshea 'United Church
presented a three -act religious .drama,
entitled "The :Seeking Wise Man,"
and a hoys' pantomime, "Silent
Night," There were also several
beautifully rendered musing selec-
tions. The. 'pastor, Rev. g. R. Peters, -
made several favorable..comments 0)1
:the 'program, after which "joy to the
World," was sung and Mr. Peters
closed the service with prayer, '.
