FORMER ACTRESS DEAD
Pea& White, cinema actress in the
early days of the motion picture, died
in the American Hospital at Paris
last week She was 49 and had been
ill for several weeks of a liver ailment.
She was born in Greenwood, Mo., on
March 4, 1889.
In the days when the motion pic-
ture business was young, movie audi-
ences sat on the edge of their seats
thrilling to the "Perils of Pauline,"
an adventure -packed serial, in whieh
the 'beauteous heroine managed to
reach death's door at the end of each
chapter, never to die. '''Pauline" was
Pearl White, blue-eyed actress cata-
pulted to fame as the first of the dare-
devils •of the screen. The ;public shud-
dered 'for a week .ait the thought of
Pauline's perikeis predicament, as
each instalment faded out with the
black -bearded villain likely as not
cackling with satisfaction, the hero
somewhere on the way to the rescue.
He always made the grade at the op-
ening of the next episode, only to let
"Pauline" get into deep trouble again.
Besides ,the "Perils of Pauline" there
were the "Exploits 'of 'Elaine," and a
dozen other serials a .blie same melo-
dramatic cast.
Pearl White grew rich ort this. She
went to Paris in the early 38's and

States. For several years she was in
the gay international set at Paris and
Deauville, In later years she lived
mare cbuietly, either at her town house
in Paris or her Chateau at lGazeran,
near Rambouillet.
She went abroad in the first place
because her movie days had affected
her health. Bare -back riding and
stunting f or the films took a toll, and
her eyes had been affected by tthe
lights employed in the early studios.
She recovered her -health in France,
but it was then too late to continue
the type of picture in -which she was
beet. She appeared in Paris revues
and made a few 'films, the last in
1907. In the satne year she made her
last public appearance, on a London
stege.
Pearl White did her own stuats.
She leaped from speeding trains,
cluag by fingertips from 'bridges and
steeples, anti escaped the jaws of
death on swinging 'ladders. In those
days there were no stand-ins or
doubles.
On a ,19315 .trip to .LondonMiss
White crossed the English Channel
in semi -regal state, with a part of the
ateamer deck roped off for her spec-
ie I use. But most of 'England was
puzzled 'aver her identity, despite the
best Hollywood -type publicity efforts.
She liked to see modern movies, but
to act again? "Oh, no, not .me," she
said recently. "I have no ambitions.
Why should I? I've got Plenty of
money. I'm 'happy now. Why ehould
I go to Hollywood?"
