Heaviest Horse Is from Member's Farm
A base sold by Mr.james Ballantyne, M.L.A., for Satur-
day's shipment to Scotland, was a splendid eight-year-olcl Bel-
gian, born and raised on the Ballantyne farm in Usborne. It.
was the heaviest of the 54 heavy drafts, weighing 2,050 tbs. at,
the stOckyartiS after a 16 -mile walk. Mr. Frank Cudmore is

HENSALL
While shingling the roof of Mr.
R. J. McLaren's house, half a mile
north of Hensalt on the highway, Mr.
John Elder had the misfortune to
slip anti fall to the ground. a distance
of 25 feet. He suffered a fractured hip
and wrist. He was immediately -given
medical aid and later was taken rti.
fDr. Steer to the Clinton hospital for
treatment. Mr. Elder is 68 years of
age and has been engaged in putting
on roofs on barns and houses for
many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Nadine of
London, accompanied by Mrs. Harry
Abary and son George visited on Sun-
day at the home of the ladies' parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Colin Hudson.
At the !baseball game played on our
local diamond on Friday evening be-
tween the Hensall and Blyth teams in
the Huron -Perth baseball series, Hen -
sail won 3 to 0. Quite a number wit-
nessed the game.
Mr. and Mrs. David Blair and fam-
ily -of Tuxford , Sask., are visiting
with relatives and friends in this dis-
trict.
At the recent June examinations of
The Toronto Conservatory of Music,
which were held at Clinton, the fol-
lowing nunils of Miss Eleanor Fisher,
A.T.C.M., passed very successfully:
Betty Mickle, grade 1 piano, first
class honors; Billy Mickle, grade 1 pi-
ano, first class honors; Mary Good-
win, grade 2 theory, 'first class hon-
ors. Little Betty Mickle, who is only
five years old, showed wonderful mu-
sical ability in her examinations.
Death of Peter Stewart -
Mr, Peter Stewart, a well known
and highly respected farrner of the Jed
concession, Tuckersmith townships
passed away on Wednesday last at
the .home of his brother, John D.
Stewart. He was in his .74th year. He
has been in poor health for some time
a victim of heart trouble. Mr. Stew -
are never married. He was a liberal in
politics and a member of the 'Kippen
!United Church. He is survived by
three sisters, Mrs. William D-alrymple
of Cromarty; Mrs. Walter McCullie
of Hensel]; Mrs. Rev. Peter Strang
of Regina, and one brother, John D.
Stewart, of Tuckersmith. A private
funeral was held on Friday afternoon
from his late home. lot 1e con. 3,
Tuckersmith, interment taking place
in the Hensel! Union cemetery. The
funeral service was conducted by his
pastor, Rev. Mr. Chandler of St. An-
drew's Church, Kippen. The pallbear-
ers werel-Itigh, John, James and Har-
vey 'Dalrymple of Cromarty, and Nel-
son Reid and Harvey Turney of
Stanley Township.

Fink of Hanover spent the week end
here with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Fink.
Miss Beryl Pfaff is spending part
of her vacation visiting relatives and
friends in Chicago.
Mr. Alex Henry of Cass City,
Mich., who with Mrs. Henry was vis-
iting relatives here a couple of weeks
ago, suffered a severe heart attack
while spending a couple of days visit-
ing relatives near 'Woodstock. After
spending a week in bed he was suffi-
ciently recovered to be taken to his
home in Cass City. His son, Delbert
Henry of Cass City, coming over af-
ter them.
The funeral of the late! Mrs. Hen-
rietta English took place from the
home of her 'brother, Mr, Harry How-
ard, on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

was conducted by Rev. Arthur Sin-
clair of Blyth, a former pastor cA the
deceased, assisted by Rev. Mr.
Brooks, pastor of the United Church,
Hensel A great many relatives and
friends called at the home on Thurs-
day and Friday to pay their last re-
spects. The pallbearers avere Geo.
Douglas, Francis Coleman, Geo. Hess,
Dr, Moir, William Foster and Robt.
Allan, •all close friends of the How-
ard family, About six weeks ago Mrs.
English left her home here to visit her
brother, Mr, Gea. !Howard, of Exeter,
while there she was taken ill and in
spite of the best medical skill and
nursing she grew weaker, passing
away an Wednesday, Mrs. English
was a daughter of the late Mr. and
John Howard and was born at
Drysdale in 3'C4, After her marriage
to Mr. English she resided in Stephen
township for a ntimther of years, later
they lived in ,Centralia till IMr. Eng-
lish died ,about 20 years ago. After
hor ,husband's .death he returned to
the Howard farm near Drysdale
where she kept house for her father
and tbrothers. Later with her two
brothers, Harry and William, she
came to Herisall and has resided here
'since. Up to about a year ago she had
splendid health when site suffered a
stroke which hastened the end. She
was a valued member Of the United
Church and when able .seldom missed
attending the services. She is survived
by two sisters, Mrs. 'John Ravelle, of
Grand Bend, and Mrs..Gilbert 3d. Por-
ritt of ,Calgary, and three brothers,
Henry HroVard, of .Hensall; Geo,
Howard, of Exeter, and 1Jaines R.
Howard, of Goderich. A tbrother Wil-
liam Howard passed away at their
home here in Hensel' in 111926, and a
sister, Mrs. games A. Pollock died at
Ripley in 1236. Mrs. English was in
her 76th year,
Mrs'. Fletcher of Rodney is .visiting
at the home of MTS. Robt. Bonthron.
The services at the different
churchs on Sunday were only fairly
attended so many of our citizens being
away on their vacation or at ,different
lake resorts for the day. At the 'United
Church in the morning Rev. Mr,
Brooks occupied his own pulpit. A
quartette was given by Mrs. Geo.
Hess, Miss Florence Welsh, Mr. W.
A. Goodwin and Dr. Smillie,
The July meeting of the W. M. S.
of the United Church was held in the
school room of the church on Thurs-
day afternoon, July 7, at .3 p.m. with a
good attendance of members. Mr,
Cross ,presided over the opening ex-
ercises after Which the mission circle
put on a very fine program consisting
of song 'In the Garden," scripture
readings by Barbara Shepherd an•d
June Saundercook, prayers were of-
fered iby Elva McQueen, Goldie Cross
and Pearl Harpole followed by an-
other song, "The !Old Rugged Cross."
The story of Dr. Jean Dow was in-
troduced by -Mis s Irene Douglas.
This was put on in the form of a play
by six of the circle girls, Kathryne
Drysdale, Goldie Cross, Audry Twit-
chell, Margaret Tudor, Gladys Pass-
more, Elva McQueen. Hymn 47,
Abide With Me, was sung. A hearty
vote of thanks was moved by Miss
Murray and Mrs. Ballantyne to the
-girls of the circle and Miss Douglas,
their leader, for the wonderful way in
which they entertained the W. M. S.
The meeting closed by singing a
hymn and the Mizpah benediction.
Services at the United Church were
withdrawn on Sunday evening owing
to the hydro being off after severe
storm late in the afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs, Wm. Horton and two
children of Detroit and Mrs. Clayton
Horton and son Donnie of Niagara
Falls are visiting Mrs. N. Horton.
Quite a number from Hensall at-
tended the Orange celebration held in
Stratford on Tuesday, July 12th.
The many friends of Mrs. Jetties
Dick are sorry to hear she is not im-
proving as well as her friends could
hope for. Mrs. Dick has been inpoor
health Mr several weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. George Kellog of De-
troit and Mr. and Mrs. 'Percy -Gram
of Lansing, Michigan, were week -end
visitors With Mr. and Mrs, Geo. Gram
Mrs. Hodgins of Liman is visiting
with her sister, Mrs. Alice Blackwell,
Mr. and Mrs. Alonza Ortwein oi
Detroit have been visiting with Mr.
Ortwein's. parents, .Mr. and Mrs. J.
W. Ortwein,
Mrs, Gordon Parker who lams op-
erated an at Clinton hospital on Fri-
day for appendicitis is getting along
nicely.
Miss Kathryn Drysdale visited over
the week end in Seaforth.
Mrs. John Popewho spent some
months with members of her family
in Toronto, Galt and other points, has
returned to her home here. '
Mr. William Consitt is having his
house on King street re -painted.
At the recent mid summer examin-
ations of Toronto Conservatory of
Music conducted in Clinton by Dr.
Harry Robb of London, Miss Jean
Murdoch was successfol in gassing
grade 9, piano, Miss Helen Dick
passed grade 8 piano, and elso ob-
tained 1st class honors, in -grade 2,
theory. The above are pupils of Miss
Greta Lammie, A.T.C.M., of Hensel].

of Detroit visited over the week end
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William
Bell. On Sunday morning Mr. Rich-
ards sang a solo in Borns' Church
which was Mild] appreciated.
Mrs. Thos. Colson spent a dew days
the latter part of last week at the
home of her sister, Mrs. and Mr.
Meno Jacicson in Morris owing to
their mother, Mrs, Bowes, being very
poorly at the ;Jackson home. We hope
she will soon be better.
A family reunion of the Ferris fam-
ily was held on Sunday at the borne of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bewley in Mor-

Church, also Kinborn young people,
are holding their picnic at Bayfield
this Friday afternoon.

Stratford.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rogerson and
Family of near Brucefield spent Sun-
day at the home of Mr. David Reid,
Kenneth remaining for the holidays.
Mr, Isaac Rapson returned home on
Monday of last week after spending
the week end with friends at Bad .Asse
in company with his two sisters, Miss
Eva of Clinton, and Nellie of Toron-
to, also MT. Geo. Cardwal and moth-
er of Clinton. On Sunday, July 3rd,
they attended a Rapson re -onion pic-
nic at Harbor Beach, Mich,
Mr. Harold Fremlin returned to his
home in Clinton on Wednesday after
assisting Mr. I. Rapson with the hay.

death of her sister-in-law, Mrs, John
Seeley of London, who passed away
Monday after a lingering illness. Mrs.
Seeley was widely 'known in this dis-
trict and had many friends.
