MT. and Mrs. Leslie Hilborn were
London visitors.
Mrs. Robt. Wightman visited with
her sister, [Mrs. A. Bender at London
on Thursday.
Passing of Alice A. Stubbs—
There passed away on Friday in
the person of Mice A. Stubbs, a high-
ly respected citizen after a lingering
illness borne with Christian fortitude.
One [brother !Orton Stulbbs is left to
mourn the loss Of a beloved sister.
The funeral was held on Monday,
Marc'h 2Cith from the United Church.
Her pastor. Rev. R. A. Brook had
' charge .of the service, taking his text
from the 10th chapter of Luke, 23rd
verse; *Blessed are ye that have eyes
ito see. 'Jamie Sinis •contributed a
solo, The City fFour Square. The pall-
bearers were Thos. Taylor. Bent Tas-
ker, Herb MdElroy. Albert Walsh,
George Coutts, Wm. Jackson. The
flowers included pillow from brother,
'Orton Stubbs. wreath, citizens of
Blyth, spray, Conservative associa-
tion, spray Mr. and Mrs. Tasker, Mr.
and Mrs. S. T. 'White. 'Harmony True
Blue Lodge, Dr. and Mrs. McRae.
The Rower bearers were Hubert Hir-
ons, Stanley Sidthorpe. Clayton Petts,
D. Morrison, Joe Thompson, Wm.
Aitkens. Burial took place in Blyth
union cemetery.

Mr, Wm. Feeney has moved to the
'Dorrenstein house near Dublin.
Mr. Pat McConnell and Dr. Frank
Stapleton spent the week end at their
homes in Dublin.
'Mr, and Mrs. Philip Hartman spent
Sunday -with friends in Hibbert.
Pat and Joe Maloney visited their
mother in Stratford on Sunday, We
are sorry to bear that Mrs. Maloney.
has not ,been very well lately.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. 'O'Rourke and
Pat. Jordan visited friends in Strat-
ford on Sunday.
Mr. IJoseph Jordan has bought a
farm on the Alth concession of Hibbert
from 'Ed. johns. The farm was form-
erly owned by Andrew McLellan.
We are pleased to report that the
-condition of Mrs. 'John Flynn is great-
ly improved.
The maple syrup yield .,has so far
been disappointing.
KIPPEN
On Wednesday afternoon, March
1,6th, the lKippen East W. I. gathered
at the home of Mrs. E. Chappell. De-
spite the bad weather and muddy
roads there was a good attendance of
members and quite a number of visit-
ors. The president opened the meet-
ing anti all joined in repeating the
Lord's Prayer a.nd singing the Open-
ing Ode Thursday being St. Patriek's
day the community singing featured
several Inish songs. The secretary
read the minutes of the last meeting
and Mrs. G. MoLean then reported
having received a letter front Mrs.
Strang Sava.ge of Peace 'River Dis-
trict acknowledging the bale of goods
which was sent to her in January. All
the members tad the name of her
.favorite bird in answer to the roll call.
Mrs. David Chappell gave a very
good paper on current events. The
motto, "The 'Bird's the Farmer's
Friend". was given by Mrs. Jacobi.
The quartette consisting of Mrs. Hog-
garth, Mrs. Caldwell and Misses
Sandford and Martin with Mrs. 3. Me -
Queen accompanist, sang two very
pleasing numbers. Mrs. E. Chappell
,gave the story of the farm and Mrs.
G. McLean gave a taAk on the finish-
ing and pressing of garments made of
woollen material and showed samples
of correct finishes prepared by Mrs,
Varley. Miss M. °airs gave a very in-
teresting paper in birds and Mrs. W.
Caldwell had for her subject "The
Prevention of Home Accidents," Mrs.
Cole gave .11 further [paper on the
.course fo 'BnyManship" and Mrs. W;
McLean [gave a paper on the "Read-
ing Habit" and a review Of the book,
'With the West in her Eyes." A -fare-
well gift to Mrs. G. Broadfoot prior
to her departure bo her new home was
displayed. The institute is sorry to
lose 'Mrs. Broadfoot, who has .been a
-valued member for some tithe. With
the singing of the National. .Anthem
the meeting was brought to a close.
A social half hour was spent while
lunch was Served, The next meeting
in April to be at the home of Mrs.
Turnbull.
Mrs. John Sinclair very pleasantly
entertained a number of her friends

Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Boyd of At-
wood and Dr. and 'Mrs. Lrawson of
Listowel visited with Mr, and Mrs.
J. W. McLean on Sunday.
The syrup season so Tar this year
is not very good.
Mr. and Mrs. Elzar Mousseau and
baby and Mrs. 'James Darman of the
village visited .with friends in. Zurich
on Sunday.
The mission circle girls held a St.
Patrick's supper in the school on
day evening Which was largely at-

Mr. and Mrs. John !Jarrott and

er of their friends on 'Thursday even-
ing of last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Dave Kibpaarick are
busy moving this week to their new
home in Exeter. They will be very
much missed in the village.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dayman visit-
ed at the 'home of Mr. Thos. Butt on
Sunday.

The annual institute supper was
held on March II16th with a fair attend-
ance. 'rhe supper was excellent and
program fine. A very enjoyable time
was spent.
We are sorry to bear of the illness
of Fraser Thompson. We wish hint a
.speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs, Will Tamblyn of
Forrest Hill, Toronto, visited the for-
mer's mother over the week end on
their way to Harniston. 'Mr. Tamblyn
is first Canadian internation 'Presid-
ent of the Optimist Service Clubs, he
having travelled over 20.000 mites in
Canada anti 'United States speaking on
the problems of youth. In 1-Iarri..ton
Mr, Tamblyrt spoke on the .subject.
"A courageous youth for a new de-
mocracy."

Mr. 'John Munn, who spent a week
in Brantford and a few days in Kitch-
ener, has returned to the 12th conces-
sion of MdKillop again.
Wilma and Glen MidNichol, who
have been laid up with a very bad
cold, are able to be out again.

The St. Patrick's social held in
Bethel Church was very well attended
and a good proven -in -lc was provided
which everyone enljoyed, A dainty
lunch ended the programme.
Miss Bessie Davidson is progress-
ing nicely after her illness during the
winter. ,

The farmers are busy renovating
their machinery to get on the land as
to all appearances it will soon be
ready.
Syrup making had a short season,
Mrs. M. Reid in company with her
son 'Wilmer, Mrs. Reid and little dau-
ghter, motored to Stratford Sunday.
'Lenten service will be held in St.
Johns' Church Thursday night at 8
o'clock.
Mrs. J. Seeley and Mr, and Mrs,
Frank Warder .of London, .Mrs. Floyd
S-chell and Mrs, jack Seeley of De-
troit, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Seeley of
Clinton. all visited at the home of
Mrs. A. Austin on Sunday last.
The March meeting of the Wom-
en's Association was held on March
,116th at the home of .Mrs. A. Ings,
Meeting- opened with the .president in
charge and 10 ladies present. Hymn
502 was sung. The Lord's prayer was
then repeated in unison. Scripture
'lesson 01115 Polam was read by Mrs.
George Clarke. Minutes were read 'by
secretary, Mrs. R. Dowson, and ad-
opted as read. Business was then
transacted. Report of the play 'pro-
ceeds 'WaS given by the treasurer, Mrs.
E. Foster. Twelve members .paid fees.
Two quilts were accepted to be mint-
ed. The quilt the society pieced was
then 'quilted. A dainty lunch was ser-
ved by the hostess. Collection was
forty-five cents.

cessful sale on Tuesday. Everything
was disposed of. Mr. Beadle has
rented his farm to Arthur Hallum
and he and Mrs. Beadle intend mov-
ing to the village and will live in the
house of the late Win. 'Der,
'John Wright has sold his farm
to iCarl Govier and Mr. Wright has
purchased the farm of Mr. James Ro-
benton.
The ladies of Knox 'Presbyterian
Church held a very successful hot
supper, -bazaar and sale of home made
baking. The tables were in charge of
Mrs. Herman Deer, Mrs. 3. C. Stoltz.

ephine Weir, The bazaar and sale of
home made baking was in charge of
Mrs. W. T. Robison and Mrs, 'Fred
Ross.
A large crowd attended the dance
in the Forester's hall 'last Friday
night The dance was sponsored by

Mr. and Mrs, George Hamilton, who
has 'been cutting wood in his father's
bush in Colborne, cot his foot, neces-
sitating medical attention. Mr. Ham-
ilton is now convalescing at his home

The funeral of David Bruce whosi
death occurred at Dauphin, Manitoba,
was held from the home of his broth-
er, IFrank Bruce, of \Vest Wawanosh
on Friday. The service was conducted
by Rev. Hugh Wilson and the pall-
bearers were James H. Johnston,
John Reid, Joseph Washington, Sam-
uel Johnston, Harvey Reid and David
Hamilton, Interment was made in
Dungannon cemetery,

The contract for crushing and
trucking gravel for 111938 was let to
.Calvin Cameron of Grey Tp., by Mc -
Knipp council at a special meeting on
Monday. Twelve tenders were re-
ceived.
The .MdKillop branch of the W.M.
S. of the Presbyterian Church held
their 'first meeting ,for the year at the
home of Mrs. A. D. Scott, Thursday
afternoon, March 117th. The new pres-
ident. Mrs. Helen 'McMillan, occupied
the chair and the Meeting opened with
hymn 74. The Scripture lesson, 'taken
from the 8th chapter of Matthew, was
read by Miss gewn Scott, followed by
prayer by Mrs. McMillan. The min-
utes of the ta.st meeting and roll call
by the secretary. The Glad Tidings
prayer, MTS. 13, Carter. Then followed
a short business .discussion and it was
decided to take up a special offering
at the April. meeting to assist the W.
M. S. with their allotment for the ,bale.
Little Margaret Carter took up the of-
fering and alter singing !hymn 794 the
meeting closed with repeating the
Lord's prayer in unison. The April
meeting to be held 'at the home of
af,rs. J. Govenlock.

from Scott Memorial Hospital an Sa-
turday and is doing nicely.
The weather is very 'springlike and

Adam Scott, for nineteen years a
Clinton resident, 'died on al.arch
at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T.
J. McMichael, concession 3, Hallett,
.with Whom he had resided since the
death of Mrs, Scott slightly over one
month ago. He was in .his 86th year,
was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Adam Scott and was horn in Edin-
burgh, Scotland, September 18, 8852.
After coming to Canada he engaged
in farming and in '118718 married Chris-
tine McArter, who died 25 years lat-
er. Ia 1006 he married 'Sarah Tasker,
ividow of Thomas Penfound and by
her was predeceased on February lb%
He farmed lin Morris and 'Hallett
townships and 319 years ago retired
and took up residence in Clinton. He
was Liberal in polities and 'United
Church in religinn, There survive one
.brother, Rev. Andrew Sccitt. of Chi-
cago; one sister, Mrs. I. C. Harris, of
London; One daughter, Mrs. T. 13. Mc-
Michael. Seaforth. one stepson, 'Wil-
fred 1Penfound, of IGoderioh township;
six grandchildren and one great
grandchild. Two sisters, Mrs. ,David
Cameron ,and Mrs. Fred 'Treadwell,
both of London, •passed away a num-
her of years ago. :A. 'brother, William,
.died at Bay City early in iFebnuary of
tltis year. The funeral service was
held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.

The Duke Comes Back

did considerable 'damage to buildings,
,bushes, fences and other property.
Twenty feet of the roof of Lt. Mur -
ray's barn was tarried off and made
a .complete wreck of it. Henry Better -
mares driving shed was wrecked,
Shingles :were stripped off a lot of
,borns; the hay !barn belonging to
!Peek Shea of the town line, was
blown off its foundation, toppled over
and completely wreolced. Windmills
were el knocked to pieces. There
were some narrow escapes, but' fort-
unately no one was hurt. An awful
rain storm swept over this diatrict on
Easter Sunday and .during the night
until Monday morning. Some places
there was water running over the
road. We are still loo'king for nice
weather. ..
Bayfield
Mrs. Green, who has been visiting
friends in Harriston and other places
during the 'winter [has returned to her
home here. --Robert McMurray, 'fish-
ery inspector, was in IGoderich on
business.—The wind storm of Friday
last did but very little serious damage
in the village, beyond blowing down
fences, and a few trees, also shatter-
ing a few window panes, but in the
surrounding country the damage was
quite severe.

A terrific windstorm pas -ted over
this vicinity last Priday unroofing
many barns, and causing- many people
to suffer more or gess from it,s effects.
Brucefield
The -annual spring show. of stal-
lions, heavy horses, light 'horses and
bulls will be held in Brucefield on
April Ond.—One of the worst wind-
storms in the history of the oldest in-
habitant, .passed over this place on
Friday about noon. The morning was
very rough, with a heavy downpour
of rain, and some sleet, and quite a
strong 'wind, Which increased in vel-
ocity, until it 'became a 'hurrican.
Nearly every farmer ihad some dam-
age -done, either his fences were
Mown clown, or part of the roof is off
his 'barn. The warehouse at the sta-
tion also suffered. There is a great
demand for shingles, and men to put
them on.
