Mrs. R. Fields
There died .at her hone in Bayfield
on Friday, December 22nd Margaret
Johnston in her ninety-seventh year.
Shewas born in Bayfield on thefarm
now owned by Mrs. Wm. Heard, Blue
Water Highway, _ on November 15th
1843. She was the eldest of the eleven
children of Canaria Ravin and
Christopher Johnston' who emigrated
to Canada.fromCounty Fermanagh,
Ireland in 1829 and settled in this
district. At the age of twenty she
was married to 'Henry Howard who
as a boy came from `the Old Country
on the sanne ship. Ta this union were
born nine children, five of whoan sur-
vive, Mrs. Fred Baker, Mrs. C. Berry.
and John E. Howard of. Bayfield,
Christopher, Windsor, and George, of
Regina,' Mr. Howard died in 1897
and in 1900 Mrs. Howard married
Ranson Fields who predeceased her
in:1029, Mrs. Fields was in, the truest
sense of the word, "Bayfield's Grand
Old Lady", for here she was born,
lased and died. Coming of a family
fanned for its longevity, she is sur-
vived by two brothers and two sisters,
William Johnston and Mrs. Charles
Parker, Bayfield; Wellington John-
ston, Welcome, North Dakota, and
Mrs. Belle Parker' of Saskatchewan.
Mrs. Fields was an Anglican.. Two of
her sisters were amongst the first to
be baptized' in Trinity Church. • Up
until a few months .ago she recalled
the.hardships and pleasures of the
early days in this district. She is
also .survived by twenty grand -child-
ren and twenty-eight great grand-
children. The' funeral which was iarg-
ely.attended was heldfrom her late
residence on Sunday afternoon, the

The annual Carol Service on Sinn
day night. Rev. H. Q. Wilson had
charge of the first portion: of the pro-
gramme, while Resn, A. M. Boyle was
in charge of the second part. A sole
was sung' by Betty Asquith, and the
Scripture was read : by Rev. H. 0.
Wilson. Rev, A. M. Boyle prayed.
A quartette. number "No Room' ho. the
Inn" was suitably rendered by, -Rev.
H. C. Wilson, Earl Wightm.an, Miss
Sadie Carter and Mrs. Fred Plraetzer.
A solo "Star of the East" was sung
by Elmer Robertson. The address was
given by Rev, A. E. Silver who gave
a :brief but impressive . message - on
"Go Ye to Bethlehem". After the ad-
dress, a solo "The First Christmas
Moan" was very beautifully rendered
by Miss Dorothy Boyle of Toronto.
Miss Boyle is a soloist in the largest
IPresbyteria-n church in 'Toronto. Sev-
eral carols were sung during the ser -
i vice, Rev/. H. C. Wilson pronounced

The Forester's Hall was filled on
Wednesday night last for.tthe annual
Auburn School concert. The follow-

59 Years Married
Mr. and Mrs, Jahn Symington re-
ceived many congratulations at their
home: on Main street on Christmas
Day, when they .celebrated their 59th
wedding anniversary. They were rear-
vied on December 25th, 1880 at the
Auburn Presbyterian :.Manse by Rev.
Jas. Pritchard. Mrs. Symington was
formerly Mary :Louisa Medcl, daugh-
ter of the late Robert Medd and El-
len. Duck, both nativtss. of l',ngland.
Mrs. Symington was born 80 years
ago in West Wawanosh, Mr. Syming-
ton's parents were natives of Scot-
land bat came to Canada, and :settled
in West Wawanosh on the farm. form-
erly, occupied by the' late 'Richard
Bruce. Mr. ,Symington was born 85
years ago. After farming 35 years
on the farm now owned by their son

Red Cross Meeting
There will :be a meeting of the
South End .Red Cross unit on Wed-
nesday afternoon, January 3rd ,at then
home of Mrs. Charles Wise. All ladies
in the community who are interested
in Red Grass work are invited to
attend.

011 Thursday evening the friends. of
Mrs, John Kirby who was formerly
Miss Emily Thoonpson and new resid-
ing in Oshawa gathered at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Thompson, and presented her with a
beautiful rug and a handsome tray.
The evening was spent in the usual
way—games, singing etc. and finally
a good lunch. After singing Auld
Lang Syne the company dispersed all
feeling they had a . good time.

Thompson of London spent the holi-
day with their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Root. Thompson.
Rev. John R., Mrs. Thomason, of
Stratford, Mr. and Mrs. John Kirby

parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thomp-
