District President at Institute Meeting
The regular monthly meeting 'of the
Woman's Institute was held in Com-
munity Hall, on Thurs., Dec. 7th with
a fair attend'a'nce. The president, Mrs.
R. Fairservico presiding, after the
opening exercises the minutes of pre
vious meeting were read by the See.,
itlrs. B. Brunsdon, the cdrrespondence
was also read. Roll Ca11 was respond-
ed to by 26 members. Treasurer's re-
port was read. The question of visit-
ing the Ctunty-Home was discussed
and arrangements were made for the
Institute to visit the Home on Mon-
day, Dee. lsth, to treat the inmates
'to a short program and goodies. Com-
mittees were appointed to make ar-
rangements. All to meet at Mr. J.
P. Manning's store at 7.30 o'clock
Monday evening. This concluded busi-
ness. Several of the Blyth branch
were present. • Mrs.• Cummings and
. ;Mrs. Taylor of Blyth contributed a
mouth organ selection, accompanied
by Miss I. Cummings on piano, Mrs.
Oster, Dist. Pres., and delegate to
. ,Area Convention held at London in
November gave a full report of Con -
Venters As As Mrs. Geo. Moon was un-
able to be present no paper on Hist-
orical
ist-o ical Research was given, but may
be givlen at a later date. Christmas
`Carols were sung with Mrs. tteq. Me-
' Vittie at the piano. Solo by Miss I.
Crmmings of Blyth; duet by Mrs.
Ctrni rings and Mrs. Taylor and the
members' joining by singing - "Put on
Your Old Grey Bonnett." Mrs. Fair -
service voiced her appreciation to
Mrs. Oster for her troubles in mak-
ing out her splendid report and for
visiting our Institute. A. vote of
thanks was given by the members.
Meeting closed by singing the Nation-
- al Anthem. A. tasty lunch was pros
aided by the group in charge and a
social time was spent over the tea
cups.
Following the Institute meeting the
Londesboro Red Cross met with Mrs.
R. Fairservice presiding. Minutes
were read and approved. Mrs. C.
Crawford, treasurer, reported $166.90
had been made inthe Red Cross drive.
Mrs. F. Hall, Convenor Knitting coin,
reported wool for sweaters and socks
are now obtainable and that 8 pairs
of socks have been completed. Cutting.
• Convenor, Mrs. R, Youngblutt, re-
ported 12 pairs of pyjamas were cut
• out and ready for sewing. This con-
cluded the business and meeting was
adjourned.
White Gift Service
The White Gift Service of the Unit-
ed Church S. S. was held last Sunday
• morning. The church was comfortably
filled, the children occupying the
eetttre seats. The chairman was Mr.
A, Shaddick, the S.S,' Superintendent.
The choir was composed of smaller
children who led in the service of
song quite well. Miss Phyllis Man-
ning and Betty Snell sang a pleasing
duet. Rev. A. Menzies gave e. very
:fine talk to the S.S. on the loaves
and fishes explaining it quite clearly.
Mrs. L. McNail gave the Christmas
story, four small boys took up the
offering. Miss G. Mountain presided
at the piano throughout. A. large
.number ' of White Gifts were handed
in to be distributed here and there
Where each class wished. The meet-
ing all through' was very interesting
with the feeling of Christmas and
-good will with each and everyone.

ill at her home here with an attack
of quinsy.
Mrs. Jas. Howitt has left to spend
the winter with her daughters, Mrs:
Hugh Chesney of Seaforth, and Mrs,
Percy Manning of Londesboro,
Mrs. John McKnight has been vis-
iting Mr. and' Mrs. Lloyd Ferguson.
The Christmas Concert of Auburn
Public and Continuation Schools will
be held in the Forester's. Hall on -Wed-
nesday, December 20th.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Durham of St.
George'wcre recent visitors with the
latter's mother, Mrs. John Ferguson.
We are glad to report that Mrs.
Harry Govier, who .has been ill, is
feeling better again.
Mr. Harvey McGee • and Miss Jose-
phine Weir sang' on the "Church of
the Air" at C.K.N.X. Wingham, on
Monday 'morning.
Mrs. F. Ross visited with friends
in Dungannon on Monday.
Miss Thelma and Norma Caldwell
of Blyth spent the weekend with Miss
Bernice Lawson,

'The Red C oss Society held' a dance
in the Form ster's Hall on Friday

The Red Cross are holding a con-
test concert in the Forester's Hall on
Friday night Dec. loth. The contest
will be East and West Wawanosh
versus Mullett and Colborne. A good
time is in store for all who attend.

` Baptist Lunen 'Aid•
The Baptist Ladies Aid met at the
home of Mrs. James Raithby on
Thuriday afternoon with the presi-
dent, Mrs. C. A. Howson in the chair.
The opening ezereises were in charge
of Mrs. Earl Raithby and Mrs. Jas.
Raithby. Mrs. Jas. Woods. gave the
Christmas Message. Readings were
given by Mrs. R. J. Phillips, Mrs.
Glen Raithby, Mrs. Annie Wolper,
Mrg. Earl Raithby, Mrs. A. E. Silver.
Many Christmas Carols were sung
accompanied by Mrs. R. J. Phillips on
the harp. Mrs. Silver closed the meet-
ing with prayer after which a hot
supper was served.
Red Cross Notes
A meeting of the local Red Cross
Society was held in the Forester's
Hall on Thursday afternoon. Mrs.
Herbert Mogridge, the president was
in the dhair. The secretary, Mrs. F.
Ross reported that the following mat-
erial had been purchased: 26 lbs.
yarn, 56 %yds. of pyjama cloth, 68
yds. canton flannel, 34 yds. •cotton
eiderdown, 57 yds. factory cotton, 460
yds, butter cloth, 12 yds. flannelette,
The treasurer, Miss Josephine Weir
reported that she had over .$181 on
hand with several canvassers to re -
post. I•t was decided to hold the meet-
ing the fist and 3rd Wednesday of
each month.
W.M.S. Treasurer liteefg*a
Mrs. James Mutch who has been
treasurer of the W. M. S. of Knox
United Church for 17 years has re-
signed this position, and much regret
is felt by all . the members. As a
slight token of their appreciation,
Mrs. Jas. Woods as president and
Rev. and Mrs. Wilson met at Mrs.
Mutch's home and on behalf of the
W.M.S. presented her with a beauti-
ful house plant and a letter of ap-
preciation. Mrs. Mutch is at present
ill at her home.

answered by exchange of Christmas
gifts. The meeting was closed by
singing the National Anthem, after
which a dainty lunch was served by
the hostesses, Mrs. R. J. Philips, Mrs.
Edgar Lawson, Mrs. Wan. Straughan
and Miss Sadie Carter.
The annual Junior Bible Class
Banquet and election of officers was
held in the Sunday School room of
Knox United Church Monday evening.
Following the supper Which was pre-
pared by the ladies, Mrs. Earl Wight -
man, retiring president, presided far
the following program: Sing Song led
by Rev, H, C. Wilson with Mrs: R. D.
Munro at the: piano; speeehes by Bert
Marsh, Wm. Straughan, and R. D.
Munro. The sec: treas.'s report was
given by John Moulder. The- follow-
ing officers were elected: President,
R. D. Munro; Sec: Treas., John Moul-
den; Teachers, Harold Webster, Wm.
Straughan, Earl Wightman, . R. D.
Munro,' Mrs. Moulder, ' Mrs.' H. C.
Wilson, Bert Marsh, Antos Andrew
and Mrs. Albert Campbell. The class
decided to purchase a stove for the
kitchen. Mr. Amos Andrew, Mrs. A.
3. Ferguson and Mrs. Wm. Straughan
were appointed a committee to purch-
ase same. Mr. R. D. ''Munro, Mrs,
Earl Wightman and John Moulden
were appointed a committee to select
a new name for the class. The even-
ing was brought to a close by singing
a hymn and prayer.
Institute Meeting
The Women's Institute held ' their
Christmas meeting in the Forester's
Hall on Tuesday. The president, Mrs.
Lawson was in the chair. The meeting
tvas opened by singing the "Ode" and
repeating the Lord's Prayer in unison.
The secretary read the minutes of the
previous meetirig which ware approv-
ed.

A Christmas greeting was read
from. Miss Margaret Small of .Tor-
onto. Mrs. Wesley Ilradnock sang,
"Star of the East" as a solo. Mrs.
R. M. Weeks ' of Blyth was the guest
speaker and gave a splendid address

The B.Y.P.U. of the Baptist Church
met hi the Church Sunday evening
and was in charge of Earl Raithby.
The Scripture was read by Geo. Rob-
ertson and Harold Reid offered pray-
er. Mr. Dunn of Niagara favored with
several, solos. Mr. Robert Gibbs of
Londesboro played several violin solos
accompanied on the piano by his son,
Donald. The topic, "A Ohristmas
Message" which was prepared by
Miss Margaret Small of Toronto was
read by Miss Amelia Mclllwain Mr.
Earl Raithby closed the meeting with
prayer.
LONDON ROAD'
The December meeting of the Lou-
don Road Club was held at the home
of Mrs. Hanly on Tuesday, The Pres.,
Mrs. Henderson, opened the: meeting,
all singing "0 Come All Ye Faithful"

discussion followed regarding helping
the Red Cross. It was decided to join
with Clinton, Mrs. W. Falconer tools
charge of tho'progrant. Hanly Bros.
contributed two duets; Mrs. G. Fal-
coner a recitation; solo by Wanetta
Henderson, and a duet :by Mrs. Hend-
erson and Mrs. Plumsteel. A quilt was
finished in the afternoon, also a num-
ber of articles brought in for the bale
to be sent to Mrs, Cox, Sprucedale,
Northern Ontario. The January meet-
ing will be held at Mrs, Plumsteel's.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ahrens of De-
troit are spending a few days at their
cottage in the village,
Mr... Frank Wild and daughter,
Dorothy, of Edmonton, Alta., called
on Mr. Frank Keegan and the Wild
family on Monday, having come up
front Toronto where Mr. Wild purch-
ased a new car. They are motoring
back to Edmonton, lea,viing London on
December 13. Mr. Wild is a son of
the late Peter Wild of the Bine Water
eextensive Hig+hway and later anfann-
er
in North Dakota. Some years ago
Frank moved to the Edmonton dist-
rict and now, with the help of three
sons, farms eight hundred acres of
land. Mr. Wild and Dorothy like
Ontario and say that they will'- come
again.
Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Smith and two
children of London spent the week-
end with Mrs. Smith's mother, Mrs.
Chas, Parker.
Mr. Wm. Kerr of Great Falls, Mon-
tana, who is visiting relatives in God-
erich' called on his cousin, Mr. John
R. Cameron, on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Murdock Ross left
last week, to visit their daughter in
Woodstock.
Mrs. Cawston and Mr. Rolfe of
London were the guests el Mrs. P.
Weston on Saturday.

Richard Bailey and was born and
raised in Bayfield. He received his
early education here and in Clinton
Collegiate Institute. He entered the
service of the old Sterling Bank as a
junior in the Bayfield branch and lat-
er returned here as manager for a
few years, When he left Bayfield
he was greatly missed not only in
the community but also in Trinity
Church in which lie was an active
member and soloist in the choir. He
Possessed a very pleasing voice and
during the last Great War was active
in the Men's Association in assisting
with entertainments for the benefit
of the Patriotic Society. Besides his
widow Sand three children to whoin.
sympathy is extended, he is survived
by two brothers, Thomas of Bayfield
and Richard of Galahad, Alta.
A meeting of the Bayfield unit of
the Red Cross Society was 'held in
the Town Hall on Friday afternoon,
It was decided to have afternoon tea
at the meetings during the winter
months and make a charge of ten
cents. Each person is asked; to bring
her own cup and saucer to save wash-
ing
ashing dishes after the meeting. Forty-
one pairs of socks, 6 suits of pyjamas
and 1 sweatere1' i
w e turned in, Mrs.
Jas. Ferguson donated 6 pairs of
mitts for refugee children. Will the
knitters please note that a radio an-
noun.cement has been made to the ef-
fect that the socks should be made
two -inches longer in the leg in the
future.
Mrs. Walter Harviey and small son,
George of London, ate spending .some
time with her parents, Mr, and Mrs.
E. Sturgeon ,as her husband is with
the R. A. F. destined for overseas
service.
The Anglican Church Christmas
entertainment will be held Tuesday
evening in the Orange Hall. All mem-
bers of the congregation are cordially
invited to be present.

Former' Resident Honored ha West
Many of the older residents in this
township and district will be inter-
ested ina recent address presented
to Mr. John Hannah by the citizens
of Swan River, Manitoba, before his
removlal to Neepawa, where the will
spend his remaining clays. Mr. Han-
nah, who is over 90 years of age, was.
a former well .lnn.own resident of the
2nd concession of Tuckersniith,where
he farmed for many years, Hannah's
school house on that concession hav-
ing been named after him,, Mr. Han-
nah was also widely known in the
creamery business, having 'conducted
creameries in Seaforth anti other
centres in Huron for some years. I1v
the middle nineties, Mr. Hannah mov-
ed to Manitoba and has since been, a
resident of that province, the past 20
years having been lived in Swan
River.

The annual monthly meeting of the
W.A. of Ebenezer was held on Thurs-
day, Dee. 7th at the home of Mrs.
W. Biggin. 'The president, Mrs. B.
Lobb presiding. The meeting opened
with the hymn "Silent Night", fol
lowed by prayer by Mr. Wilding. The
Bible reaching and prayer was given
by Mary Oakes. Business was discus-
sed after which the election of of-
