Church Notes Mother's Dayservices were well attended in all the village churches here on Sunday. At Knox Presbyterian Church, Rev. A. M. Boyle occupied the pulpit, and preached on "A Mother's Faith" us- ing as his text Proverbs 81-28. A Mother's choir led in the service of praise, and rendered an anthem. At 'this service the sacrament of baptism Wee observed and Earl Wagner Yung - Nutt, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Yung- blutt, and John David McLeod, son 'of Mr. and Mrs. Daviel McLeod were baptised. "Christ's Attitude Toward Woman" 'was the sermon subjeet of Rev. A. E. Silver, when he preached at the Baptist Church on Srmday afternoon. .A men's choir sang an anthem, Rev. H. C. Wilson preaehed in Knox United Church Sunday morn- ing on the subject "Mary the Moth- er", using as his text Luke 2:41. A Mother's choir sang two anthems. Mrs. Fred Plaetzer taking the solo 'part in one of them.- Next Sunday morning there will be a, Patriotic Ser- vice in the church to observe the ',coining of the King and Queen. At St, Mark's Anglican Church Rev. '11. M. Weekes, rector, preached on the subject "A. Rose to the Living," -his text being Si. John 12:3. Talking and moving pictures were shown in the Forester's Hall last 'night. These were sponsored by the 'Shell Oil Co." and the proceeds were 3n aid of the Auburn Public Library, DUNGANNON PASTOR LEAVING Rev. W. E. Gill, who some weeks ago made announcement of his resig- nation from the charge of Dungan, -non and Crewe Unitedchurehes, to be effective at the end of June when 'St. Andrew's United Church, Port Albert, is to be joined up with the 'Dungannon -Crewe circuit,has receiv- ed a call to the three-eharge circuit of ' Wellburnt_Brown's and North Mis- souri. He has announced his ac- ceptance of the call and will reside at Wellbuln, which is situated about five miles south of St. Marys. The re -arrangement of the four' churches --Nile, Carlow, Leeburh and Benmil- ler-into one circuit will also become ',effective at the end of Juna. PORTER'S HILL . . Sunday was Mother's Day at Grace Church. Quite a number were present. Wilmer . Harrison took the ' part of supt during the service. Mrs. Wilmer, Harrison gave the address. A choir of little tots sang very .sweetly, they were Margaret Torrance, Estella Cox; Madlene Cox, Phyllis Harris, Audrey Harris, Audrey Hairisan,. Harry ,Tor- rance, Kenneth Harris. Mr, Harold Johnston, Vancouver, accompanied by his father, J. E. John- ston, Toronto, spent a few days with his aunt, Mrs. Fred Elliott and other friends in Goderich, returning by way of Owen Sound and Wiarton where. they lived at one time. Mrs. King, Orillia, spent, the week- end with her two little daughters at. Miss Sophie Lindsay's horn. Congratulations to Mr, and Mrs, Charlie Wilson • recently married, Af- ter a short honeymoon we believe they take up residence on the 16th con., Goderich township. And still the bells keep ringing for another couple. What an epidemic of weddings. At the Music Festival in Clinton three of the pupils from Na. 5 did fine; owing to colds the others were not present. Miss Evelyn Cox and Irene• Woods of London each spent Mother's. Day at their parent's home. Visitors at J. S. Lockhart's Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rowden and two daughters, Miss Kathleen Cameron, Clinton, ,and Mr. Lawson Lockhart, Royal Oak, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Errand' Beetles, Tor.' onto, spent theweekend with Mr. and Mrs. Allen Betties. Mr. Peter Young has started on their new house. Mrs. Thos. East who has been un- der the Doctor's care is improving, There are still several cases of flu, also mumps. On Thursday evening, May. 18 at 8 o'clock two young students from Emanual College, Toronto, have been secured 'to speak on the work being done by the United Church of Can- ada. They are splendid speakers and are to, be ordained in June. All neigh- boring congregations are invited to conic: 'Mr; Douglas Gill, soloist from Grand Bend loss also volunteered to sing. This promises to be instructive and interesting service. All interested in Church work are welcome. VARNA A very interesting meeting' was held in St, John's Church, Varna, on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs. Gra- ham addressed the ladies of the W. A. of Middleton, Bayfield and Varna giving a report of the fifty-second annual meeting of the W. A. held In London. A hearty vote of thanks was tendered Mrs, Graham for her very instructive report. After the meeting a dainty lunch was served by the Varma ladies at the home of Mrs. G. H. Beatty. A hearty vote of thanks was tendered Mrs. Beatty for her hospitality. Mr. ,and Mrs. G. V. Raymond of London called on friends in the vil- lage Monday. Mr. and 'Mrs. Geo. Gierhart and family of Detroit in company with Mrs. J. W. Horner of Zurich spent Sunday at the home of the latter's daughter, Mrs. A, Ings. Sunday was observed as Mother's Day in the United Church where the infant son of Mr, and Mrs. William Clark (Gerald William) and William Floyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dowson were baptized, Rev. Mi. Pet- ers preached a very appropriate ser- mon. The many friends of Mrs. J. Rath- well will be pleased to know she is slowly improving. 'We are also pleased to, report Mrs. Grassic has returned home from Sea - forth hospital much improved. The Misses Chute and, brother, Elliott of London spent Sunday at the parental home. Mr. and Mrs. Wilford and Middies of Hay visited Sunday with, the Tat- ter's parents, Mr, and Mrs. Grassie. Mrs. Cook of Goderich township called on her sister, Mrs. Grassie on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. John Smith has gone to Lon- don to receive treatment. We hope he may return feeling much improved, Miss Violet Meelymont has gone to Bayfield to stay with Mrs, Cleave, who has just returned home after spending the winter with her daugh- ter in the States. Mr. Lloyd Keys, Mr. George Wil- son and Mr. Wm. Shaddick attended the Legion meeting. in Clinton on Thursday evening of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Keys and fanc- ily and Mr. and Mrs. George Reid and family spent Saturday evening with Mr. and Mrs, Jas. M. Rdid of Clinton, and also attended the Musi- cal festival. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Keys and Nies. George Reid and Bill visited on Mon- day with Mr. and Mrs. Jas. M. Reid of Clinton. PAYS OUT $28,283,284 IN OLD AGE PENSIONS The Dominion Government con- tributed $28,283,284 to old age pen- sions in the year ended last March 31st, compared with $28,524,587 the previous year, according to a report tabled in the Commons by 'Finance Minister Dunning, Number of old age pensioners was 181,514 compar- ed with 175,673 inthe previous. year. The Government also made a contri- bution of $760,354 to pensions for the blind, a sharp increase over $128,418 in 1937-38., The.Dominion:pays 75 per cent of the old age and blind pensions and the .provincial governments pay the remainder as well as administration costs.
