y
In Monday's Globe & Mail appear -
ed an item regarding Mrs. George
Horton of Charlotteville- who has just
celebrated her 94th birthday and
claims to be the first white child
heti in Oxford County.
t3'. i
This item was of particular' inter-;
est to .Mr. 3. A, Rath, Clinton, as
his grandparents were among the
first settlers to locate in Oxford
County. His grandfather, the late
John Titus was born in Gagetown,
g
New Brunswick, of Loyalist parent-
age.'As a young man he located in
Oxford County where he Hier Eliza
beth Caldwell who later became his
bride. They were married in London
on December 30, 1843 by Rev r.
l5bbs Their marriage certificate is
in Mr. Rath's possession and is
quite unlike those issued today, be-
ing. merely a handwritten statement
of their marriage.
Mr. and Mrs. Titus made their
home in the neighbourhood of Otter-
vzlle, South Norwich township, and
it was there their three. daughters
were born, Mary Elizabeth later be-
came Mrs.Welham Rath who sliest
in February 1910. Although size was
born three months earlier than Mrs.
Horton referred to above, Mr. Rath
does not recall his parents ever
claiming his niother wag the first
white child to be born in O ord
County although it would appear that
she was entitled to the honour.
