Death of Rev. J. C. Reid Mrs. W. C. Robertson and Miss - Elizabeth Elkin have received the sad news of the death of their neph- • ew, Rev. J. C. Reid, of Minneapolis, Minn., on February 3. Mr. Reid was well known in this community as his first start in life was as a teacher in Westfield school where he taught for three years. He then entered college to study for a Methodist minister. After graduating he held different appointments in Canada, one of them being at the Nile Meth- • odist church. In 1926 he moved to United States, He is survived by two brothers and three sisters, Jas. and Alice of Sprucedale, Ont., Mrs. Lowe of Alberta; Mrs. McPherson of B. C., and Dr, W. H. Reid of Port Rowan, Ont., who was with his bro- ther at the time of death. W. M. S. Meeting I The W.M.S. elf the Presbytertian, church was held at the home of Mrs. Fred Ross with an attendance of 20. On Tuesday evening, February 1 Mrs. Maitland Allen entertained girls in honour of her niece, Be Craig's 14th birthday. The first of the evening was spent in contes under the leadership of Miss I Stalker of Blyth. The first conte was a flower contest, the first pri going to Vivian Straughan and consolation to Ruth Wilson. Games and contests were then enjoyed under the leader- ship of Frank Raithby. Stanley Mc - Nall and Marjorie Johnston. A guessing• contest of the number of. beans in a jar was. won by Dolly Beadle and Emma Robertson. Death of Mrs. Harry McBrien The death occurred on Thursday of l\l Mrs. Harry cBrien of Detroit. The deceased woman was formerly Annie Govier daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Govier of the Base line Mallet -b. She was born on the farm now occupied by Herb. Govier. She and Mr. McBrien kept hotel here for some time, and then moved to De- troit. Mr. McBrien died there some years ago. Mr. McBrien was in her 78th year and 'had been ill for some years. She is survived by two sons, and two daughters; Norman and Harvey, Mrs, J. Clayton with whom she resided and Mrs. Roy Stinson, all of Detroit. A sister, Mrs. Archie Jackson of Goderich also survives. Mts. Jackson is the last surviving member of a family of seven child- ren. The funeral service was held on Saturday at Detroit. c- s- fir - Cy n 10 r,e, d h s. on it.• s it e a.1 a BAYFIELD Mita. R. IL Middleton of Port Credit is visiting her mother, Mrs, N. W. Woods. Mrs. George King met with a painful accident one day last week when she slipped on the ice and in- jured her hip. We regret ,to report that Billy Westlake is ill in bed with rheumatic fever. His many friends wish hire a speedy recovery. The pupils of the ,senior room of the Public School are •having a holi- day this week owing to the illness of the teacher, Miss Isabel Kirk. Miss Elsie McLeod went to Detroit cn Tuesday to be with her sister, Mrs. C. Robbins, who is ill in bed. The A.Y,P.A. met in the Orange Hall on Monday evening when there was a good attendance The meet- ing was in charge of the president, Miss Maude Parker, Rev, J. Graham led in prayer;Miss Ella' McKay took the topic which dealt with a plan of henry Ford's to have smaller fact- ories in villages instead of being' con- centrated in cities. Borden Clark gave an accordian selection, :riiisses Evelyn Geuteinhardt and 'Mary Wide combo bad charge of the games and refreshments were served by the committee. Lyon but returned to her own home on Monday. DEATHS ARCHIBALD-In Tuckersmith, on Saturday, February 18th., James Archibald, in his 86th. year. TAYLOR --In London, on Sunday, February 19th,, John Leonard Tay- ler, of Goderieh 1n his 56th year. Station Agent Dies John Leonard Taylor, for .many years station agent on the C. N. R. at Clifford. and recently at Goderich, died Sunday at the home of his moth- er, Mrs. John Taylor, 023 Lorne av- enue, London. He was in his 56th year. Mr. Taylor had been in the em- ploy of the C. N. R. for about 40 years, 34 of which were spent at Clifford as agent there He was. trans- ferred to Goderichtwo years age and lived there until taken 111 when he returned to his home for treatment. Mr. Taylor, with outstanding music ability had taken an .active interest in musical affairs in church and cornntuitity. In Goderieh he took over leadership of the band when that organization was about to break up, offering his services free to keep the band alive. He was baritone soloist in North Street United Church, Goderieh. He was also a member of the Clif- ford Lodge L0.0.F. and was a past master. of Clifford Masonic Lodge No. 315. Surviving ate his wife, Mrs. Caro- line (Eckel) Taylor, and two daugh- ters, Marion and Gertrude, of God- erich; his mother, Ivies. John Taylor, cf London; two sisters, Mrs. C. W. Stanley and Miss Hazel Taylor, both of London, and two brothers, Harold C., and Rowland Taylor. MAItRIAGE 18 SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT. ON HIGHWA.Y PORT CREDIT, Feb, 15 -Not all accidents end up the way this one did. Sidney Liscombe and a. girl friend were walkingalong the highway December 5 when Liscombe was struck by a ear and injured. The driver, Rev. Charles Schutt, superin- tendent of the Baptist Home Mission of . Toronto, was arrested and charg- ed With reckless driving. The charge was dismissed. It was said Dr. Schutt leml become a friend of the Liscombe family while Sidney was recovering. . Ltlter when Sidney and the girl decided to get married De. Schutt performed the ceremony. ONTARIO, IS HEAVIEST RELIEF . FUND RECIPIENT Details of the Dominion govern- ment's contributions to the provinces under provisions of ,the Unemploy- ment and Agricultural Assistance Act, 1938, were made public in a retrun tabled in the House of Com- mons Wednesday, The Dominion paid 30 per cent. of material aid expenditures of the pro. vinces and municipalities, or a flat sum, which ever was the least for Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and British Columb- ia while Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta received 35 per cent. or a flat sunt, which ever was the least. As no material aid is being distrib- uted in New Brunswick, agreement with that province provided a con- tribution of $225,000 for relief works or 50 per cent, of the expenditures, which ever was the least. Contributions to the provinee's were: Prince Edward Island $348,- 000, Nova Scotia $210,000, Quebec $4,800,000, Ontario $5,580,000, Mani- toba $1,980,000, Saskatchewan $2,- 430,000, .Alberta $1,500,000;` British Celumbia $1,380,000.
