celebrated his 64th birthday Saturday
by working as usual. He was at his
desk al; Lamle?. House early in the
morning, opening ?Ind reading hund-
dreds of letters and telegrams of con-
gratulation he received.
The prime minister, who was born
December 17, 1874, had no birthday
party.
Flowers sent by well-wishers filled
his study and mailmen and telegraph
messengers were his finst visiters,
The prime minister looked fit on his
birthday, having seemingly recovered
frain the attacks of sciatica which
curtailed his activities during the
summer. A month's rest in the West
Indies this fall aided him to regain
his health.

WILL HOLD YULETIDE PARTY'
14,000 FEET BELOW GROUND
Work will stop at the Morris iron
mine, „Ishpeming, Mich, for half an
hour tomorrow morning while the men
bald an unusual Christmas party 14,-
000 feet below ground.
This bas been an annual event at
the mine, owned by the Inland Steel
Company, since 1920. Chanles Miron,
mine captain, who fathered the Yule
celebration, has been invited ta at-
tend. He now is at the Penn mine
in Vulcan, Mich.
.A. Christmas tree, chopped from
Upper Michigan's woods, will be the
centre of the subterranean Yule
festivities.
There will be ,singing of carols,
"Genial Jim" Fowler, timber boss,
garbed as Santa Claus, will distrib-
ute gifts, .
The unique Yule ritual actually re-
sulted from it joke, but it has come
to mean much •to the husky men
who toil underground. Eighteen years
ago an evergreen tree fee to the
ground near the mine shaft. A prank-
ster droppecl it down the opening and
it was tossed into, the corner. Miron
conceived the Mea of decorating it
and letting the Miners have their
own annual celebration.
