Caterpillar's Damage' Trees
Black caterpillars, thousands of
them have done considerable damage
to the walnut trees at Fountain Park,
New Hamburg. They have also been
seen on other walnut trees in the
village.
A. R. G. Smith, former provincial
weed inspector and a strong agitator
of reforestration, noticed these pests
while at .the park and conferred with
the agricultural college at Guelph as
to the remedy. It was pointed out
that the invaders cluster in groups
of hundreds and cutting off the small
branches and burning them was a
good means of extermination.
Several thousands were destroyed
this way at the park. A. survey was
made and it was believed they have
been checked at their work. They
are only found on walnut and hickory
trees.
One of the caterpillars was kept
for study and it was found to shed
its slcin‘Similiar W a toad.

DRIVES CAR AT 347 MILES
• PER HOUR
Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah -.Capt.
George E. T. 'Elston drove his pond -s
emus automobile nearly six miles a
minute but a blazing desert sun,
threw the delicate timing device out
of gear, depriving him of an official
record. The Englishman. Bashed his
'Thunder bolt" once through the
measured. mile at 347,155 • miles per
hour, faster than manhas ever
traveled before on land. On his re-
turn trip:, required to strike an av-
erage and make the mark official,
the sun glare caused a failure in the
electric eye. that measures the speed.
On this run, said friends, he hit the
unprecedented mark of almost 360
miles an hour. Could that speed•be
sustained, he could travel the 3,111
airline miles between New York and
Los Angeles in about eight; and one-
half hours.
