Nineteen Years -Leader
Prime Minister Mackenzie King
passed another milestone on Sunday
when he completed nineteen years as
Leader of the Liberal Party in Can-
ada. If he continues much longer -
and there is every indication that he.
may -he will excel the record of any
other living political leader, but may
fall short of the long service marks
set by Macdonald and Laurier in
Canada and by Gladstone in the
United Kingdom. •
The present Prime Minister first
entered Parliament thirty years ago,
and since he succeeded Sir Wilfred
Laurier nineteen years ago has rend-
ered conspicuous service. He is mast-
erof his Cabinet, and an indication
of his success as a political strate-
gist is the fact that he commands
the largest majority in the history
of the Canadian Parliament. That
he has few rivals in the art of man-
aging Parliaments is proved by the
skill. he showed in 1926 when he car-
ried on without a majority. Since the
days of, Laurier the work of the
Prime Minister's office has increas-
ed fourfold, partio tlarly in the De-
partment of External Affairs, while
the head of the Government is beset
by domestic problems which were
undreamed of a quarter of a century
ago.
Mr. King's predecessor, Sir Wile
fred. Laurier, was a member of the
Dominion Parliament for forty-fiveyears, Leader of the Liberal Party
for thirty-two years, and Prime Min-
ister for fifteen years. In the minds
0±'' Liberals he was without a peer.
His record was matched by that of
Sir John A. Macdonald, the first
Prime Minister of Canada and great
Conservative chieftdin, who adorned
the first Minister's seat for twenty
years and for several years previous
to Confederation was Premier of
Upper Canada.
GIadstone gave Mr. Mackenzie
King a mark to shoot at. At the
age of 25 he became a Lord of the
Treasury in Peel'ii Government of
1834; at 83 he was: Prime Minister
of England ter the 'fourth time. He
charmed and dominated the Mother
of Parliaments for sixty years.
