The annual• memorial service of Ball's (Auburn) cemetery was held "last Sunday with a good attendance but owing to the inclement weather the service was held in the church • on " the cemetery grounds. Rev, Wm. Raithby of St. Thomas preached a .forceful sermon -front Exodus 17-14 -on "Memory". Mt. Elmer Robertson ',sang a solo. Mrs. John Symington celebrated 'leer 79th birthday yesterday. Dunbar of Lambeth, spent the weekend and holiday with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Welsh, Mr. and Mrs, II. Paul of Windsor, were guests oe Saturday of MT. and Mrs. Stewart Middleton. The Misses Cora and Alma Tee= wartha and Helen, Esther and Grace 'Maeblath were recent guests at the ' home of Mrs, H. J. Trewartha. The Messrs, Harold and Bill Wild- ing, were ild-ing,.were visitors at the parsonage 'over the weekend. We are pleased to learn that Bill expects to remain -with us for some :time. VARNA' Mr. Samuel Rathwell of Lucknow, spent. Sunday visiting his brother, John Rathwell. Mrs. Anne Woods of Listowel, is visiting' her sister, Mrs. F. Week's and brother George,' who is improv- ing after his illness. The W. A. of St. John held their monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Chuter with a fairly good attendance in spite of the extieme heat. Mr. Russ Chuter of Creighton Mines is spending a short time at his home here. Mr. Frank Weeks is feeling much better and able to be around again. Harold Elliott of Kitchener spent the weekend and holiday here. Master Mervyn McCullough of Goderich, is spending his vacation with his aunt, Mrs. Roy Dowson. The United Church, which has been closed for redecoration, will hold service on Sunday evening at 7.30. ' The W. A. held a very successful quilting in the hall on Thursday of last week. Master Ernie Clarke of Seaforth, is visiting his grandparents, Mr, and Mrs. George Clarke. REID REUNION On July 31st the descendants of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Reid of Stanley township accompanied by a few Of their. friends gathered at Bright's Grove, Sarnia, and spent a very pleasant day together. Those present from net, Mich. were: Mr. and Mrs. Win Cable, Mr. and Mrs. Paul John and Donald. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Greenberry and Roy, Mrs. Kenneth Austin, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Duncan and Florence, Froin Detroit, Mich.- Mr. and Mrs. John Reid, Lloyd, Helen and. John Allan and Mr. Cecil Wiley, Ma and Mrs. James Reid and Kenneth, Clinton, Ont. Mr. and Mrs. Elsner Stephen- son, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McOlinchey and Mr. and Mr's. yerey Johnston and Phyllis of Goshen line., Mr. and Mrs. Will Reid and Jean, Mr. and Mrs. George Reid, Bill Bob and Charles and Mr. and Mrs: Lee McConnell, John and Barbara of Varna. Former Resident Of Blyth Dies In Woodstock The death occurred in Woodstock, of George Beatty', a resident of that city, on Thursday, Julys 2Stlt. Mr, Beatty bad been a sufferer from Dia- betes for the past two years, and filially succumbed to the disease. Mr. Beatty was born in Ashtabula, Ohio. Whilehe lived in Blyth, he was em- ployed by the C, i'. R. when that road was run through these parts. I•le later worked in a factory in Ingersoll, In religion Mr. Beatty was an Anglican and was also affiliated with the I. 0. O. F. Surviving are his wire, formerly Miss Clara Mason of, Blyth, and a brother residing in Ashtabula, lemeral serviceswere•,held in Wood- stock on Saturday, .tidy 30, and inter- ment took place in'Dlyth ilnion Ceme- tern, BISCUITS MADE QUICKLY Reeve James Aitken, of South Dumfries, threshed a field of Daw- son Golden Chaff wheat on.July25, 1988, and on July 26 he took five bags of the grainto the Paris Food Mills, Paris, where it was milled into flour and returned to the grower. That same day, not more than 24 hours ,having elapsed, it had been made into, hot biscuits for dinner and new bread for supper. The, crap yielded about 26 bushels to the acre and the grain tested 61 pounds to the bushel. Miller Picnic About forty member's of the'Milier• family and their connections met at `Woodland Farm", the hone of Mr. and Mrs. T, R, Jenkins last Wednes- day afternoon, July 27th for their annual picnic. Coming from London and various pohits threughont the district ap enjoyable time was spent 'n the 'usual activities connected with gatherings of this kind. There were games for young and old and races for the children. Prizes were awarded the winners and also to the oldest member, Mrs. J. Mc- Knight. McKnight, The Tebbutt Picnic Oliver Jervis was president and in charge of the Tebbutt .,family reun- ion;. which was attended by one hundred persons from Toronto, Lakefield, Detroit, Party Sound, Clinton, Seaforth, Cromarty, Lond- esboro, Hohnesvlllle, Porter's Hill and Goderich. They were descend- ants of De' Edward Tebbutt, who left London, `England,' in 1839 to come to Canada. With his family of 'six children, George, Fred, Christ- opher- and Wallgate Tebbutt and Mrs. Mary Jervis and Mrs. Frances Proctor, he settled in the Holmes ville district. Mr. Jervis was assisted in the' pic- nic by Irvine 1' Tebbutt, secretary- treasurer, and, the following com- mittees: Social, Mrs. Ira (Me>rtdll, Mrs. T. Bath Fancily Reunion The 10th' annual reunion of the Rath 'family was held last Wednes- day at the home of Mr. and Mrs.. Lyle Hopper, Brussels. Guests num- bering 110' were present from Tor- onto, Exeter, Bluevale, Ingersoll, Dorchester, Clinton, Auburn, Wing - ham, ' Putnam, Mossley, Belgrave, Mitchell, Mt. Elgin , and Brussels. After dinner the business meeting was conducted ,by Joe Rath. Reports were adopted and officers wee' re- elected for 1939: president, Joe Rath, Putnam; vice-president, Clar- ence 'Rath, Be'1'grave; , secretary - treasurer, Harry Ellery, Mount Elgin. bIr. and Ml's. Charles Rath were appointed bible convenors, and Mr. and Mrs. " Marshall Stonehouse, convenors of snorts. The day was ideal :ones there was a good program of sports, arranged by Mr. and Mrs. Stonehouse. The person coming .the greatest distance was William Mast- ers, Toronto. It was decided to hold the next reunion on July 19,'1939,. at Springbank Park, London. JOINS' H. S. STAFF Mr. Harold Sturgess, who has been the principal of the Alvinston school, has accepted- a position on the Ex- eter H. S. Staff to take the place of Miss Marks. Miss Marks recently resigned her position en the staff to accept a position with a New York. firm to go to the islands of the Car- ibbean Sea to act as French inter- preter.
