The Ladies' -Aid of the Baptist
Church 'met in :the • basement of the
^Church 'Thursday' afternoon, with the
president, Mrs. C, A. Howson; in
-charge. The scripture lesson was
read by Miss Elizabeth Elkin, and
• the Lord's Prayer repeated in unison.
A very interesting tonic was given by

given by Mrs. Stanley Johnston, Mrs.

Stewart King, young son of Mr.
and Mrs. Russell King, received . a
broken ankle while riding horseback
on the farm' of Arthur Hallam near
Auburn on Thursday. He was taken
to the Goderich hospital where the
injured limb was set, and was brought
home Friday. He is under the care of
- Dr, B. f;', Weir.
Mr. and Mrs, Harry Rinderknecht
and sons, Harry and Maynard, and
Miss Anna Beadle, R.N., of Detroit,
visited over the week -end with Mr.
',and Mrs. George Beadle.
Elkin Wilson, who washurt recent-
ly at the Auburn saw mill, has been
`:taken to the Goderich 'hospital for
' treatment.
At the farm of Mr, and Mrs. harry
',Sturdy of East Wawanosh, who last
year were successful 'turkey raisers,
'one of their valuable turkey hens
was killed by a bird known as a tin. --

CHURCH NEWS.
At the Baptist church Sunday af-
ternoon the pastor, Rev. G. W. Sher_
man spoke from, Hebrew's 3-7 on "To-
day" and from Proverbs 27-1 on "To-
morrow". ,
Rev. John Polliek of Whitechurch
conducted the. services in the'Frea-
byterian and spoke from Galicians
6-14 "The Goss of the Christian
World;" -
Rev. A. M. Boyle preached Anni-
versary,services at Calvin.
At the Anglican church, Rev. A. M
Weeks chose as his Whit Sunday
Message, "The Birthday of the Chris -
tion Church",' under the heading of
Evangelism, Stewardship, Loyalty,
and Fellowship. There wily be no
service next Sunday owing to the dia-
mond jubilee at the Blyth Anglican
Chureh'whero Rev. W. H. Hartley of
Kincardine, a former minister, will be
the guest speaker.
PORTER'S HILL
Rain, rain. Everything looks beau-
tiful. Growth is very rapid. Haying
will soon be in full swing.
Quite a lot 'of improvements have
been done on Newton's sideroad. The
county 'grader has leveled off the
ruts and bumps and the road has
been widened and gravelled.
A splendid play was put on at the
Hills on Friday night last, "For Pete's
Sake". This play was well rendered
and much enjoyed. Anyone wishing
an evening of fun will'` do well to Se-
cure it': The proceeds were for group.
3, Ladies' Aid. -
Sunday last, Mrs. Heatheringten,
Goderich, was the speaker at Grace
church. She took as her subject,
"Beautiful Living." She is a pleas-
ing speaker, and was listened to with
deep interest. Tie collection was in
aid of building committee.
Next Sunday, no service at Grace
Church, as this is St. Andrew's church
Bayfield, opening service.
Mr. and Mas. J. S. Lockhart, son
Arlie, and daughter, Mrs. R. E. Row -
den, spent the week -end in Dundalk,
They were accompanied home by Mrs,
Corbett, Proton, who will spend a
month 'with hes' daughter here.
TUCKERSMITH
The June meeting of the Tucker -
smith Ladies Club was held at the
home of Mrs. Edwin Johns with 22
members, and three visitors present
The roll call eras answered th "'the
name of a famous Canadian. Woman
and for 'what she is or was noted,'
A short program was given consist_
ing of readings by Misses Sadie Bal
and Margaret Crich, solo 'by Mrs. Ed-
wia Johns, piano.solo Mrs.' A, Math-
eson. Plans were discussed concern-
ing the annual picnic and it was de-
cided to spend an evening at the lake
with supper and games, sometime h
July. The July and August meetings
are to be withdrawn, and Mrs. Leslie
Lawson offered her home for the Sep-
tember meeting. Some sewing was
done, a quilt finished and a social
hour enjoyed at tea.

Clark wedding on Wednesday.
Mr, and Mrs. E. Townsend attend-
ed the Graduation. Exercises at Ham-
ilton Hospital on Wednesday, when
Miss Elizabeth Broadfoot graduated
in nursing.
Mr. J. Turner is attending the Uni-
ted Church Conference as representa-
tive from Turner's Chueh, at Chatham
this week.
Mr. Amos Townsend had a shingling
bee to reshingle his house on Friday
last.,
Rev. C. S. Hawke preached in Tur-
ner's church on Sunday when Rev, G.
Burton attended Conference at Chat-
ham.

parents in Dorchester on Sunday

ing for a couple of weeks in Toronto
and also up the St. Lawrence to other
points of interest.

Mr. Harry Durnan is in Clinton
hospital where he underwent quite a
serious operation on. Wednesday last.
At last reports was getting along
nicely.
Mrs. Alvin Mct1owal is waiting on

returned frons the hospital, Mrs, Ved-
der', is improving but is SO in bed.

cality before; assuming his duties in
his ;new position with the London Life
Assurance Company.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Cudmore, Miss
Thelma and Charlie, accompanied by
Mr. -Brown visited with Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Cudmore of Cargill over Sun-
day.
The sympathy' of this community is
extended to Miss Acheson in her re-
cent bereavement in the sudden death
of her sister, Mrs. Nesbitt.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sturdy and fam-
ily of Saskatoon, Sask. are visiting
with relatives here.
Mr, Hugh Glen of Woodstock spent
the weekend under the parental roof.
Mrs. Aiken of Clinton spent the
weekend with Miss S. Acheson.
Mr. and Mrs. E. Yoe visited relat-
ives at Hamilton last Saturday and
Sunday.
Mrs. S. T. Walter who has been
visiting ,her brother, Mr. 0. Courtice
of Chicago, for the past few weeks,
returned to her home last week.
Mr. Will Potter is visiting Mr, and
Mrs. McFarlane at Noranda.
Miss Bernice, Bond returned home
last week after completing a 6 months•
course in the London Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shaddock and
Birdie, of Hyde Park, spent the week-
end with -the lady's parents, Mr. and
Mrs, Will Potter.
Friends Stage Mock Wed-
ding and 'Make Presentation
On Friday evening the neighbours
of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Hoggarth
gathered together at the Summerhill
Hall and presented their daughter,
Thelma, with two occasional chairs.
The ceremony opened by Mr. Percy
Gibbings ringing the cow bell to an-
nounce the arrival of the groom, Mrs.
Warren Gibbings, .who entered with
the best man, Madeline Mason, Next
came the bride beautifully gowned in
'white silk covered with lace, and ear_
tying white flowers. The bride was
Bob McMichael. "She" was accom-
panied by her father, Barbara Snell,
Next came,the bridesmaid, Mr. War
rear Gibbing,, who looked really'
charming and shy in a suit of wine
colored crepe and carrying a bouquet
of white Snowballs. "She" scarcely
dared moved due to her hat falling
off. Mr. Clarence Ball - was ring -
bearer and was dressed in pink with
white sash, and shoes which were far
too small for him. Mr. Neville Forbes
was quite cute dressed in white with
large white hat tied under his chin
with ribbons and carrying a basket
of flowers. Miss Isobel Forbes played
the wedding march, and Mr. Ephraim
Snell sang "Until We Part", accom_
panied by Mir, Wm. Lovett.
After the ceremony Mr. Neville
Forbes stepped forth and from his
basket of flowers drew out a bundle
of papers and finally found the short
address which he proceeded to read
(when he could spell the words). and
presented Thelma and Ray with the
chairs, along with good wishes and
all the frills. Afterwards Rapson',
Orchestra played for the dancing.
Lunch was served at midnight, after
Which more dancing was enjoyed. The
happy gathering dispersed in the ear-
ly hours well satisfied with the ev-
ening's entertainment,

The ladies of Lucknow and St.
Augustine Women's Institute were
guests of the St. Helen's. Branch on
Thursday last. There were over 100
present. After the regular meeting
a good program was put on by the
visiting ladies. A recitation by Miss
Finnigan of St, Augustine; Mas, Her_
ace Aitcheson and Mrs, Phillip Stew-
art gave, a solo each; Mrs. Dr, Fowler
and Mrs. Norman Wilson, a piano so_
lo; reading,; Mrs,. Arch. Patterson.
The topic, "What I would like to be
when 1 am sixty", was ably taken. by
Mrs. Lane, Taeleavein. A social hour
was spent and -lunch. We hope' to
have, them, back again sometime.
