Wm, lticIlwain quietly celebrated
his 76th birthday on Thursday. His
twin brother,
tDavid, of Goderich also
was 76 on that day.
Word has been received here that
. A. M. Rice, a former manager in
the local Bank of Commerce, and
now of Ayr, has been appointed
manager of the branch at Caledonia,
near Hamilton. It is 10 years since
Mr. and Mrs. Rice left here to go to
'Ayr.
The students attending Goderich
Collegiate from here were forced to
stay in Goderich for a couple of days
last week owing to storm blocked
roads, One of the local mail couriers,
Charles Scott, left on Friday at two
•o'clock itt the afternoon on his trip,
and did riot return until 10 o'clock
that evening. Nevertheless, he com-
pleted his 25 mile trip.
Miss Margaret King i s visiting
Mrs. Albert King at Goderich,
Ides. Thos. Doyle is visiting her
daughter, Mrs. Wm. Marrs of Londes-
boro.
George Straughan, who has been
sailing on the Great Lakes, has re-
turned home.
Norman Raardan has returned home
Amu Guelph where he has been em-
ployed.
The W.M.S. of Knox United church
held their monthly meeting in the
ehurch basement on Tuesday. Mrs.
Howard Robertson was in charge and
led in prayer. The heralds were giv-
en by Mrs. II. C. Wilson and Mrs.
Chas. Straughan. Christmas read-
ings were given by Mrs. W. H. Shep-
pard and Mrs Straughan; Mrs. J. J.
:Robertson favored with a solo "Star
of the Fast", accompanied by Miss
Sadie Cartes,', Mrs. Howard Robertson
gave the Christmas message.
Bible Class Officers •
The Junior Bible Class of Knox
'United church held their annual meet-
ing Tuesday leveeing. After a bounti-
ful supper prepared by the ladies,
Ralph D. Munro took charge of the
business part of the meeting, after
which a brief social time was spent.
Rev. H, C. Wilson presided for the
election of officers which resulted as
follows: President, Mrs. John Mould-
en; See.-Treas., Harry Sturdy; asst.
Amos Andrew. The teachers were re-
elected for another year.
The Ladies .Md of the Anglican
church met on Wednesday at the
home of Mrs. Chas. Asquith. The
president, Mrs. Gordon Taylor was
in charge. The meeting was opened
by singing a Christmas hymn with
Betty Asquith at the piano. Prayers
were led by Mrs•. Taylor and Mrs.
Asquith. The Bible needing was giv-
en by Laura Phillips. The secretary's
and treasurer's reports were given
and the roll can was answered with
a verse with the letter "D" in keep-
ing with December. Christmas greet-
ings were read from Miss Margaret
Small of Toronto. Betty Asquith and
Laura Phillips were appointed to at-
tend to buying gifts for the children
of the congregation at Christmas. The
topic on "Religion finds its strength
in individual faith" was given by
µair Asquith. Thu meeting was dos-
ed with prayer by Mrs. Taylor. Lunch
was served by Mrs. Asquith and Miss
Betty Asquith. The January meet-
ing will be held at the: home of Mrs.
Gordan Taylor.
The local Red Cross shipped the
following to Toronto this week: 48
pair of socks, 1. sleeveless sweaters,
10 scarfs, 4 pair half mitts, 1 aero
cap, 1 pair mitts, 3 hospital gowns,
7 Pair pyjamas, 2 pneumonia jackets,
and for Refugee work: 12 quilts, 17
dresses, 9 kimonas, 1 skirt, 7 coats,
50 nightdresses, 5 slips, 11 sweaters,
10 pair boys socks, 13 pair boys mitts.
John Symington
The death occurred Tuesday at his
home, of the oldest village resident,
in the person of John Symington. Mi'.
Symington had been in ailing health
for several years, being more ser-
iously ill for the past six months. The
deceased man was born 86 years ago
on the farm formerly occupied by the
late Frank Bruce. His parents James
Symington and Margaret Duncan
were pioneer Scottish settlers of West
Wawanosh. It was on December 25,
1880 that John Syrington was united
in: marriage to Mary Medd, and had
Mr. Symington lived until Christmas,
he and Mrs. Symington would have
had the privilege of celebrating' their
diamond wedding anniversary. After
their marriage, they lived on the farm
now owned by John Moulden. Twenty-
five years ago he and Mrs, Syming-
ton retired to live in Auburn. The
deceased man was a member of Knox
United Church for 58 years. He is
survived by his wife and two daugh-
ters, Mrs. 'Harvey Wallace of Wilkie,
Sask., and Mrs. John 14leulden of Aub-
urn, also 5 grandchildren and 4 great
grandchildren. The funeral will take
place from Knox United Church on
Thursday at 2 pan. A private service
will be held at the home at 1.30. Rev,
II. C. Wilson, the pastor will conduct
rho services. Interment will take place
in BalI's Cemetery.

The W. A. met at the home of
Mrs. Stewart Farquhar on Thursday.
The vice-president, Mrs. Stanley
Hayden presided at this meeting, The
meeting was opened with a Christmas
hymn. After the reading of the min-
utes of the previous meeting, the
roll call was answered by "a verse
of our favourite Christmas Carol,"
The devotional period was taken by
Rev. H. Wilding. Reports were giv-
en and all business for the year was
settled. The election of officers was
conducted by Rev. Wilding, after

busy preparing their annual Christ-
mas concert which will be held on

attend this concert. The children are

will include carols, patriotic songs an

We regret to report the death of
Mrs. E. Tooley (nee Mabel Pilgrim),
who passed away in London hospital
on the 4th of Dec., after an operation.
She leaves to mourn her loss her
husband and five small children. The
sympathy of the community is ex-
tended to her (lather, Mr. C. Pilgrim
and C. Pilgrim Jr. of the village.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Townsend spent
Sunday at the home of the lady's
parents, Mr, and Mrs. E. Guitar,
Snow ploughs and shovels are quite
the order of the day but we hope
Dame Winter is giving us the worst
first.
The ninny friends of Geo. Beatty
Sr., will be sorry to know he is still
confined to his bed. but ave hope soon
to see him around again. .

to fall in her hone recently. Her
knee was badly twisted and caused
her to be laid up for a time.
Mr. Geo. Barr is still quite ill. A
nurse is now in attendance.
School Section No. 8 are preparing
for their Christmas concert, which
will be held on Dec. 19th. The child-
ren are very ettt used by the event
which no doubt will be very pleasing,
