S. • ONTARIO STREET UNITED , CHURCH Tuesday, October 22, at 8 p.m. Sharp Dr. McClure is an eminent medical missionary of the United Church of Canada and is on furlough from China. He is also a world figure in Red Cross service. A dynamic personality, Dr. McClure has gripped thousands who have crowded Iarge churches and halls in Toronto and elsewhere to hear his story of China and the Chinese. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Campbell of Toronto were weekend visitors with Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sheppard. Miss Alma Mutch of Toronto spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Jas. Mutch. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Scott spent the weekend with friends' in Kitchener and Toronto. Miss Grace Scott of Port Dover and Miss Mildred Scott of Stratford spent the weekend with their par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Scott. Dr. and Mrs. Gordon Ferguson of Toronto spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Munro. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Scott of Toronto visited on Monday with Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Philips and Mrs. C. A. Howson. Mr. and -Mrs. Donald Mckenzie of Lochalsh were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Robison. Leslie Philips and Frank Nicole,. both of the R.C.A.F. at St. ,Thomas spent the weekend with the former's uncle, Mr, Ezekiel Phillips and Mrs. Phillips. Miss Mary Asquith of Toronto and Harold Asquith of Kingston spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Asquith. Donald' Ross attended the Ontario Presbyterian Young People's Conven- tion fir St. Paul's church, Hamilton, over the weekend. Harvest Hoare Services Harvest Home services were held in St. Mark's Anglican on Sunday and both services were well attended. The church was beautifully decorated with flowers, fruit and vegetables. In the morning service the rector, Rev. Weekes, was the spanker, and spoke of "Thanksgiving." Misses Mary and Margaret Nesbit sang a duet. In the evening service, Rev R. P. D. Hurford of Seaforth was the guest speaker, and spoke on, "They 'That Sow in Tears, shall reap in .Toy." The choir favored with a num- ber and Miss Betty Craig sang a solo, The monthly meeting of the local Red Cross will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in the Foresters Hall. W. M. S. Miss Josephine Weir gave her hone for the October Thankoffering meet- ing of the W.I.S. of Knox Presby- terian Church. The president, Mrs. John Huston presided and opened the meeting with prayer. The scripture was read by Mrs. Jas. Howitt and prayer was offered by Mts. Boyle, Mrs. Wes. Bradnock sang a solo, "Count Your Blessings" Mrs. D. 3, Lane of Goderich was guest speaker, and gave a comprehensive report of the Ontario. Provincial meeting held in Toronto and also brought a Thanksgiving Message. Misses Jose- ' phine Weir and Sadie Carter'favored with a duet, "In The Garden." A hearty vote of thanks was extended to Mai. Lane for her splendid ad- dress. The meeting was closed by repeating the Lord's Prayer in unis- on. A dainty lunch was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Wagner, Mrs. Lawson and Mrs, Fred Ross. The United Church choir assisted in the service of praise at Westfield anniversary on Sunday afternoon. A duet was sung by Rev. H. G. Wilson and Ehrl Wightman and Mrs. Fred Plaetzer favored with a solo. VARNA Mr. Alvin Elliott and friend front Kitchener visited with Mr. and Mrs. M. Elliott on Sunday. Mr. E. Chutor and son Wilfred have been doing construction work at Port -Albert during the past two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Wildfong and family spent Thanksgiving with Mr. and. Mrs. Grassic, Miss Gladys Beatty spent Thanks- giving with her mother, Mrs. L. Beat- ty and Edith. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Layhamand son Billy spent Sunday with Mrs. L. Beatty. Miss Jean Reid has commenced her duties in the Clinton Hospital, where she intends training fee a nurse. Jean will be much missed in the village,. as her pleasing manner won many friends. ' Mrs, Harold Graham visited at Nelson Reid's over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. C. Coultas and family of Belgrave visited at Fred Reid's on Monday. A large number attended the recep- tion on Friday night for Mr. and Mrs, Harvey Taylor. The W. M. S. held their October meeting in the church with eight ladies present. President opened the meeting with hymn 577 followed by prayer py Mrs. McClymont. The roll call was answered with word Thanks- giving. Delegates to Winthrop con- vention were Miss Bertha Diehl and Mrs. Peters and. Rachael Johnston for the Mission Band. An'invitation was received from the Kippen Society to visit them on November 6th. Our Thankoffering service to' be held af- ter the anniversary services. Bertha Diehl took charge of the meeting for their group. Hymn 148 "Breathe on me breath of God" was sung. There were short readings by Bertha Diehl, Mrs. J. W. Johnston and Mrs. S, Keyes. The study, book was taken by Mrs. Bien Rothwell.
