PATERSON, Manager NEWS OF AUBURN Miss Mary Asquith left ori Monday to attend the school of pharmacy at Toronto. Miss Joan Sheppard spent the week -end with !Miss Phyllis Manning of Londesboro. Rev. Alexander MacMillan, D.D., of Toronto spent the week -end here. Dr. MacMillan was pastor of the Presby- terian Church here from 1887-1891. Re has played an important part in both the Presbyterian and 'United Church. He is the father of Sir Er- nest MacMillan. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Taylor, Mr; and Mrs. Thomas Johnston and Miss Laura Phillips spent last Wednesday at Toronto. Jack Weir, son of Dr. B. C. Weir, was called to the R.C.A.F.last Thurs- day. I•Ie will be a clerk. He is at present at manning depot, Toronto. Mr. Peter Patterson visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Moses Hoitz- hauer of Blyth. Recent visitors with Rev. H. C. 'Wilson and Mrs, Wilson were: David Harkness, of Edmonton, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gregg and Mrs. Wm, Gregg of Gorrie. Mrs. Edgar Lawson, Mrs. F. Ross, Mrs. Wes. Bradnock, Mrs, W. Dobie, Mrs. J. C. Stoltz and Norma Deer at- tended a W.M.S. meeting at Belgrave Presbyterian Church on Thursday where they were guests of the Bel - grave ladies. The monthly meeting of the Insti- tute will be held next Tuesday in the hall at 2.30. This will be Grand- mothers' day. The hostesses will be Mrs. Gordon Taylor, Mrs. W. T. Miss Marie P'lumsteel has left for London where she will take a year's course in Dress Designing at the H. B. Beal Technical School. Mr. and Mrs. W. Hoy, daughter Phyl- lis, Mr. and Mrs. G. Dowson of Varna with Mrs. G, Hoy and Virginia visited at the Thames Val- ley Camp on Sunday with Pte. 'Gee - don and Louis Hoy. Visitors during the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Murray were: Mr. and Mrs. Douner of Holliston, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Colquhoun and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Colquhoun of Munro, and Mr. E. J. Colquhoun of Mitchell. Mrs. Harriett R. Nye of Orlando, Flor- ida, who has been visiting at the home of her sister and brother-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Tyndall, left Tuesday to visit her son and daugh- ter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Nye, of Chicago, Ill., enroute to her home in Florida. Rev. A. J. Milligan of Goderich as guest speaker. Rev-. A. E. Silver presided for both services. At the afternoon service the speaker chose as his subject "God's, while at the evening service his theme was- "Christ as"Christ the Knocker," his text being Revelations 3:20. The Gospel Male Quartet of Stratford rendered three numbers at each service. The floral display was excellent and it dis- played a fine piece of art. Mr, John McKnight celebrated his 71st birthday en Thursday and was pleasantly surprised by a surprise birthday party. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ferguson, Bill and Lois of Clinton; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Love, Shirley and Marylin, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Love and Edna and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carrick, all of God- erich; Mr. and Mrs. Earl McKnight, Doris, Jack and Garth. A beautiful cake adorned the table, it being the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Carrick. Mr. Robert Scott suffered painful injuries on Friday while at the farm of Herman Deer, Mr. Scott was helping Mr, Doer to operate a new threshing machine. He was holding a team of horses when they became frightened and jammed him against a fence. Three of Mr. Scott's ribs were broken. The local Red Cross shipped an- other bale last week, which was com- posed of the following articles: 40 pairs of 4 scarfs; 3 pairs of socks; p wristlets, one quilt, 16 Hampton pads, 18 pneumonia jackets and 18 hospital gowns. The Anglican Ladies' Guild met Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Clifford Brown. Mrs. Gordon Taylor presided. The scripture was read by Mrs. Thomas. Haggitt, and Mrs. Wilmer Nicholson led in pray dr. Mrs. James Nicholson offered to do sewing for the missionary bale. Miss Mary Nesbitt gave a paper on the 23rd Psalm. Mrs. Alvin Leather - land gave a reading. A letter of thanks was read from Mrs. R. M. Weekes. Tillmann, Miss Margaret anti Peter Tillmann return- ed to their home in London last week after Having spent some time at their cottage, "Longue Vue". Mrs. J. E. Brent who has been with them for the month of August returned to Mont- real on Thursday with her husband who was also here for a short visit. Mr. Lloyd Hodgins of Toronto is at his cottage on The Terrace this week. Mrs. MeTague, Jack and Bo Mc- Tague, who have been visiti ng at "Llandudno", the home of Mr. and Mrs, V. C. Quarry, for the past few weeks, returned to their home in To- ronto on Monday with Hon. Justice McTague who was with thein over the week -end. Mr. J. Stewart of Hamilton spent the week -end at his home in the vil- lage. Mrs. Stewart is remaining for another week. "Ir. and Mrs. A. L. Trout and twa sons of Detroit were at their cottage in the village over the week -end. Miss Margaret Nolan of Hamilton was the guest of Miss Betty Gaird- ner over the week -end. Mrs. Claude Robbins and little daughter who have been visiting her mother, Mrs. W. J. McLeod, returned to Detroit on Sunday with her husband who was here over the week -end. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Widcombe of Windsor spent the week -end with re- latives here and in Dungannon. The Weekly Prayer of Intercession will be held in Trinity Church on Thursday evening this week instead of Wednesday evening owing to the absence of both Rev. H. Currie and Rev. J. Graham. Dr. and Mrs. N. B. Alexander re- turned to their home in London on Monday after having spent the sum- mer at their cottage, Miss V. Armstrong of Brantford is the guest of her sister, Mrs. M. Gell- ner, this week. • Miss Doreen Bailey returned to Scarboro last week after liavig spent the summei with her uncle, T. C. Bai- ley. Misses C. P. and J. B. Rankin re- turned to their home in Mount Plea- sant, Mich., on Thursday of last week. Mr. Charles Parker, who is sail- ing this summer aboard the Captain C. D. Secord, was home for a few days over the week -end while the ship was in Goderich harbour unloading wheat. Rev. J. Graham was in London from Monday until Wednesday attending a meeting of the General Board of Re- ligious Education and the Huron Col- lege Alumni. Miss Beverley York and Master Pat Graham who volunteered from Trin- ity Church Sunday School to write the G.B.R.E. examinations were presented with certificates from the Dominion Board by the Rector at morning ser- vice on Sunday last. Miss Jessie Metcalf of Detroit spent the week -end with her mother. Mrs. F. A. Edwards returned home on Thursday of last week after having visited for a few days in Kitchener. GOODHEW—In Clinton on Friday, Sept. 6th, Albert Goodhew of Stratford, in his 67th year. Result of heart attack suffered at hie summer cottage in Bayfield. MEMORIAM STURDY—In loving memory of Fer- ris Sturdy, who died on Sept. 13, 1939. We watched him suffer day by day It caused us bitter grief His weary hours and days of pain, His troubled nights are passed; And in our aching hearts we know He has found rest at last. Some day', some time, his hand we clasp, And never say farewell. —Sadly missed by his Father, Mother and Brother. HOLMESVILLE The W.M.S. met at the home of Mrs. Elmer Potter on Tuesday, Sept. 10th. The program was in charge of Mrs. Pearce; Hymn No. 225 was sung and the Scripture was read by Dell Finlay, then the roll .call was answer- ed, followed by Hymn No. 231. Mrs. Painter then gave a reading and Mrs. M. Elliott a solo, Mrs. Bert Trewar- tha gave a talk on Christian Steward- ship and Mrs. A. Bond gave a reading followed by the singing of Hymn No. 98; the program being very much en- joyed by everyone. The hostesses, Mrs. Ebner 'Potter and Mrs. John Potter served a very dainty supper after arrangements were made for the Rally Day services on Sunday, Sept. kith. Rev. Peters of Varna will conduct the service with special music by the children. STANLEY The September 'meeting of the Stanley Community Club was held at the home of Mrs, Walter Moffat on Wednesday, Sept. 4th with the president, Mrs, Victor Taylor, in the Litt* Mary Ellen Cille who was the' chair. Twenty-three members were pre- sent. The roll call was answered by the name of a military leader of the Allied cause. After a •short program the rest of the afternoon was 'spent in sewing Land knitting. The completed work guest of Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Quarry following the motor accident in which her mother was seriously injured, re- turned to Flint, Mich., with her fath- er en Thursday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Merner and family of Buffalo spent Sunday with the former's sister, Mrs. E. J. Stur- geon and Mr. Sturgeon. ll4r. Jack Murray secured a job sailing on the Capt. C. D.
