Mr. and Mrs. Geo, Beadle returned
on Thursday after visiting friends in
Tavistock.
Mr. and Mrs. Spence Irwin and
family of Ashfield visited on Sunday
with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rolserton.
Miss Dorothy Wilson has been
hired as teacher of S.S. No. 17, West
Wawanosh school; (the Diggin's
tohool) on the 2nd concession of
West Wawanosh,
The Auburn House has been pur-
chased by the County of Huron for
$1,250. It will be used as a centre
for county snowplows, equipment etc.
The X.P.S. of Knox United church
are holding a weiner roast at Sunset
beach on Friday night.
Mrs, William Million, of Goderich
visited on Sunday with Mrs, C. A.
Howson.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe. Scott of Toronto
spent the weekend with friends here,
Mr. Robert Prest, of Brussels has
been appointed teller in the bank
here. Mr. Carl Zurbrigg who has
• been teller for the post four months
has left the bank. He plans enter-
ing the United Church ministry in
the fall. At present, he is holidaying
at his home at Listowel
C.G.I.T.
The C.G.I.T. met Friday evening
ssith Helen Marsh in charge. Com-
munity singing was enjoyed with
Betty Craig leading. Eileen McClin-
chey read the scripture and Betty
Craig led in prayer. Ila Craig fav-
ored with a piano instrumental and
Marguerite Killough gave a reading.
Betty Asquith gave the last chapter
of the Study Book. It was decided
to hold a Sunday evening service in
the church on July 14. After the
''meeting games under the direction. of
Marguerite Killough were played.
Miss Edith Beacom of Hulled has
been hired as teacher of Auburn Pub-
lic school. She comes highly recom-
mended, from a school in East
Wawanosh.
The wheat in this district is. an
excellent erop this year, and it has
grown to a very noticeable height.
One crop averages about five feet,
six inches in length. It is heading
out nicely.
Th Women's Institute niet Tues-
day afternoon with Mrs. Lawson in
the chair. The meeting was opened
with the' "Ode". A minute's silence
was observed for the soldiers over-
peas, followed by prayer by Mrs.
Lawson and all repeating the Lord's
Prayer. In the absence of the sec -
eatery, the minutes of the previous
meeting were read by Mrs. F. Ross.
It was decided to purchase a pair of
blankets for the local Red: Cross. Mrs.
Woods and Mrs. Howson were ap-
pointed to purchase them. A duet
was rendered by Mrs, Earl Raithby
and Mrs. Howson. The 'report of
the District Annual held in St. Diel-
en's on May 31, was given by Mrs.
'Ross. Mrs, Woods gave a splendid
talk on "Flowers." A flower contest
was conducted by Miss Josephine
Weir, and Mrs. R. J. Phillips was
the winner. The roll call was answer-
ed by the name of your favorite
flower. The meeting was closed by
the singing of the National Anthem,
after which lunch was served by the
hostesses, Mrs. Chas. Straughan,
Mrs. J. J. Wilson and Ms. J. C.
Stoltz. .
Presbyterian W.M.S.
The W.M.S. of Knox Presbyterian
church met in the church basement
on Friday afternoon with Mrs. John
Wilsori'in-charge. The scripture was
read responsively and Mrs. Wilson
led in prayer. The secretary read.
the minutes of the last meeting. The
topic was taken by Mrs. Alfred Rol-
linson, Misses Norma Deer and Jose-
phine Weir rendered a duet. Mrs. J.
C. Stoltz gave a Bible • reading on
"Schools in India." The roll call was
answered by a verse of scripture with
the word "Trust" in it. A prayer for
peace was made by Mrs. Edgar Law-
son, Lunch was served by the host-
esses, Mrs. Edgar Lawson, Mrs. Geo.
Dowson and Mrs. John Houston.

The Sunday School Anniversary
and Flower Sunday was observed of
Sunday afternoon. The church was
beautifully decorated with flowers.
A children's choir suigplied the music
consisting of an anthem; duet, Edith
and Eleanor Pepper; Solo,George

Turner; Solo, Gladys Pepper. Rev.
Andrew Lane of Wesley - Willis
Ghurch, Clinton was guest speaker
for the occasion, giving a story sess
mon with flags for illustration.
Gifts to Bride of the Week
Prior to her marriage on Saturday
Miss Sadie Ball was guest of honor
at a ;social evening held in the
church. Rev. Burton . G. G. Bu ton Bated as
chairman, opening the proceedings
with a lively sing -song. Then fol-
lowed an interesting programme.

Reading, Mrs. Walter Pepper, "Mar-
riage"; Reading, Mrs. F, Townsend,
"The Yionsewife's If" (with apologies
to Rippling). Contests followed were
greatly enjoyed. Mr, S. H. Whit-
more addressed the future bride and
on behalf of the congregation Mr.
Fear and Mr. Garrett presented two
occasional chairs. On behalf el the
members of the Ladies Club Mrs.
Edwin Johns read an address and
presented a lovely rug. The occasion
was brought to a close by singing
the National Anthem.
Mr. Foster Gibbings of Saskatch-
ewan visited with friends here on
Tuesday prior to his retain to the
West.

OBITUARY
ANNIE E. FOSTER
The death occurred at the home of
Mr. Henry Diehl on Tuesday, June
llth of Miss Annie Foster in her
80th year, ,after suffering• a stroke
five weeks ago, from which she fail-
ed to rally. A daughter of the late
John Fester 'and Margaret Burton,
shewas born ' Stanley township,
m. ,San ey ownsh p,
near Varna, After the death of her
brother she moved to. Clinton to. make
her home with her sister, the• late
Mrs. Sarah, Ford, until two years
ago when in failing health she made
her home with her sister, Mrs, Henry
Diehl of Stanley, now the last sur-
viving member of the family. Miss
Foster was a member of St. Paul's
Anglican Church and W.A.. The
funeral was held on Friday afternoon
last, being conducted by ' the Rev.
.john Graham of Bayfield and Rev.
H. O,'Neil of Clinton. Pallbearers
were Frank. Weeks, Ted Chuter, Alex
McConnell, Archie Galbraith, .Wilmer
Reid p and Morton Elliott. Friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Boyes of
Brucefield, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wallis,
Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Welsh were
guests on Sunday of Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur Welsh.
Mr. Arnold Rathwell underwent an
operation on his eye in the Stratford
Hospital on Monday,
Mrs. E. J. Welsh has been visiting
her daughter, Mrs. H. Tyndall for a
few days.
Mrs. Eckersville of Stratford - is
visiting her daughter, Mrs. B. J.
Rathwell.
Mr. Harold Tyndall has been con-
fined to bed, under the doctor's care
with an attack of bronchitis.
Successful Red Cross Social
The social •evening held at Mr.
John Middleton's 'fast Thursday even-
ing in aid of the Red Cross was a
decided success. The lucky ticket on
the congoleunt rug was held by Pte.
Melvin Steep of the Elgin Regiment,
the first boy in the community to
enlist. The members of the com-
mittee had gathered up sixty dona-
tions for the wheel of fortune and
although 'the wheel was kept spin-
ning all night, a substantial portion
was left over. This will be taken in
and sold for Red Cross. Mr. William
Lobb acted as chairman for the pro-
gramme. Warden Reagan was pres-
ent and gave a short address. Throw-
ing darts at Hitler's effigy was well
patronized as were the other games,
and the evening was a decided suc-
cess. Excellent dance music was
provided,by the Tipperary Trio, Mr.
and Mrs. Oliver Welsh and Robert
Welsh, The net proceeds of the even-
ing were $180. Additional cash yet
to cone in from promised farm
produce to be sold in the fall will
swell this sum to approximately $200

H. Muir, Mr, and Mrs. A, W. Muir
and Eilly of Woodstock; Mr. and
Mrs. Wes. Master and fancily and
Mrs. Jas. Sanders of Embro; Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Masters of Clinton.
Neighbours of Mr. and Mrs. Har-
vey McCartney :hope soon to see
them settled in their house which
they have moved to the site where
fire visited them in February.
Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Hebden called
on the former's brother on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Elliott of the
1st. concession are making their
home with A. F. Hebden.

A Red Cross Unit to be known as
Goderich Township Red Cross No, 1
was organized Monday evening at
the home of Mr, George Laithwaite.
Officers appointed were Pres., Geo.
Laithwaite; Vice, ;Warden Reagan
Sec. Mrs. H. Montgomery; Treas.
Miss Salkeld. They will be assisted
by an executive connnitte of ten.
Meetings will be held every two
weeks at various homes in the dist-
riot.

1,000 ACRES OF FLAX SOWN
The Gordon Flax Co. have succeed-
ed in sowing 1,000 acres of the 1,000
acre crop anticipated for this year,
reports the Blyth Standard.
Very difficult weather has hamper-
ed greatly the seeding operations.
Rapid growth is reported on all
fields which have been sown. Seeding
which would have been completed
this week, but for the setting in of
another wet spell. will be continued
as soon as land is fit.
