F. 33; Others 3 Member for Huron DR, R. H. TAYLOR MAJORITY -- 465 Yesterday's election results tabu- lated late last night gave Dr. R. 11. Taylor, 47, Dashwood physician, a majority of 465 votes, His runner up Warden. Benson Tuckey, Liberal, with the C, C. F. candidate W. C. F. Oestrieher taking third place. Yesterday's voting was heavier than that of 1937.by about 100, and changed the complexion of the riding from Liberal to Progressive -Conserva- tive. The Liberals in 1937 election had a majority of 1,180. Total votes cast were 13,942. Dr. Taylor's defeat of the C.C.F, candidate was overwhelming; he•had a "majority over Oestrieher of about 2,800. This was first try for both Warden Tuckey and Oestrieher. Member for Huron -Bruce W. N. COINT[117 MATO TO l SUBJECT TO GOVERNMENT PURCHASE TAX— J. - W. HANNA, MAJORITY — 139 J. W. Hanna, Wingham' Merchant, and former town mayorfor five years took the riding of Huron -Bruce at yesterdays election by a majority of 139 votes, over his Liberal runner- up Hugh Hill, of Colborne township. He polled 4,543 votes in the constit- uency. The contestants in this Ming were all new men for the provincial elec- tion, Mx. Hill, Liberal received 4,404 votes while Mr. Lantz, C. C. F. poll- ed 3,034. 'The Progressive=Conservative mem- ber is 58 years old and the member of a family which has resided in Wingham for 63 years. Mr. Hanna has had a wide over- fence ver- i nee in the municipal e mu ci- 1 affairs of Wingham having served on the town council for 13 years. v Iangagements Announced The engagement is announced of Mary. RED CROSS NOT'ES The regular monthly meeting of the Clinton Red Crass Satiety will be held in the Council Chambers on Monday, August 9th, at 3 p.m. ASI members in town please make a point of being present. V. Clinton Airmen Win Second Place in Swim Meet A large crowd lined the north and south piers in Goderieh on Saturday afternoon to witness the swimming meet for the northern group cham- pionship' held at the harbor under the auspices of the No. 31 Mr Navigation School, Royal Air Force, 'Port Al- bert of the kind permission of Group Captain R. L. Crofton, M,B.E., A.F.C. officer commanding the station. The three contesting groups came from the airports at Port Albert, Sky Harbor and Clinton. The final re- sults gave Port' Albert 81 points., and when the contests were over, Mrs Crofton, wife of the officer command- ing, graciouslypresented the station swimming trophy, a handsomeeeilver cup, which was received by Flying Officer Caldwell, officer in charge of station swimming. R.A.F. Station Clinton secured se- cond place with 61 points; and Sky Harbor was third with 43 points. Interest was sustained throughout the afternoon as the events followed one another in quick suce'lsion. No special training had been -given any of the contestants; so ;that the • ex- cellent performance of the swimmers was remarkable and; the meet was one of the most outstanding in aquatic sports in Goderieh. Flying, Officer Petty, station sports officers, at Port Albert, stated that it is hoped to have another mea .in the near future at London between the airports of western Ontario sta- tioned at Port Albert, Sky Harbor, Clinton, Centralia, St. Thomas, Ayl- iner, Fingal and Crumlin. Port Albert team will also compete at an open door swimming meet at Sunnyside Toronto, for the No. 1 Training Command championship, in which all stations in Ontario will com- pete. Flying Officer Lothian was given a big hand by the crowd when he finish- ed first in the 100 yards free style race covering' the 35 Yard :stretch three times to complete the course. The performance of Squadron Lea- der H. E. Icing of Sky Harbor from the diving board also won the ac- claim of the crowd, as he secured first place in the eu,:t:. Hays, "C" Company ;Middlesex -Huron Regiment (Reserve) "went to war" ati the Civic Holiday week end, - leaving Sunday morning and returning Men day evening, after carrying out day and night manenvours in the vicinity of Forster's bridge north of Holmes-. ville. After the trip to Halmesville in army trucks, the troops marched afoot to the scene of the scheme. Tents, blankets, and a field of kitchen, with provisions for two days, were taken along. The soldiers are back at work now and report a"wonderful week end," glad of the chance to demonstrate Rhear 'skill. COUNCIL MEETING The regular meeting of oar town council was held in the council chamb- ers Monday evening last with all mem- bers present with the eicception of Councillor Agnew. The Mayor was in the chair. • The minutes of the last regular meeting held July 5th, and those of a special meeting held July 30th,' were read and approved. Communications for applications for three permits were read. A permit to erect an addi- tion to a place of business on Albert street as a cost of about $150 was granted Mr. Russell Jervis. Permit to change or erect pumping equipment near C.N.R. right of way was grant, ed the Canadian Oil Company. Permit to erect a porch on or near Cutter street at a cost of about $100 was granted Mr. Charles Nelson. Notice of admission of an indig- ent patient in the Clinton Public Hos- pital was read and dealt with in the regular manner. Application for rebate of $15 on hall rental for the occasion of July 30th, was presented, with a signed order _to make cheque payable to the Red Shield. This was granted. A communication from Miss E. Carter was read relative to an aged invalid under her care. Councillor Butler was authorized to enquire into the merits of the case and report to council, A communication from the Town of Burlington, relative to the gasoline tax was read and ordered filed. The letter from Mr., R. C. Hays, was read This was subsequent to Mr. Hays being consulted by • Mr. W. D. Carter with reference to the Cowper Street drain. Also a communication - from County Engineer Roy Patterson - seas read after his inspection of this drainage area referred to. Mr. W. D. Carter was present at this meeting of council.
