RED CROSS NOTES
The May meeting of the Red Cross
Society was held on Mon. May 3 in
the Council Chamber with a good
attendance. The president, Mrs. W.
Oakes, was in the chair. Good reports
were . presented from the committee
R. P.Manning conveners. Mrs. g and
Mrs. Paterson were appointed to vis-
it the hospital at the Radio School
for May, A small radio is needed for
the isolation ward in this hospital
and if anyone has one they could loan
for this purpose it would be much ap-
preciated.
Will those interested please note
that the worst rooms will be -open
on Saturday evenings from 8,30 to
9.30 to receive knitted articles and
give out. wool.

LIONS CLUB MEETING
The regular meeting of the Lions
Club was held on May 4, in the An-
glican Church Hall, with President
Ken Waters in the chair, and Mac
MacDonald of the Customs Depart-
inent at the piano. There' were .a
number of guests .present, among
thein were Flight Lieutenant John
Cuninghame, Squadron Leader Black-
man and Mr. Carleton, Inspector of
County Homes for Ontario ,and 1VI'.

Jas, Shearer gave a report for the
frolic committee this being the 8th,
annual frolic and the date June 16th,
Lion W. L. Johnson introduced the
guest speaker, Pit. Lt .John Cun-
inghame .His topic was "Iceland." He
gave a very interesting talk and it
was :much enjoyed by all present.
The lucky draw was won, by Alex
Haddy and was made by Flt. Lieut.
Cuninghame.

COUNCIL MEETING
The May meeting of our town
council was held Monday' evening
with all members present ansl the
Mayor in the chair. The minutes of
the last meeting were read and ap-
proved. Communications were then
read. James Lovett asking for a
building permit to erect a cottage at
the cost of $880 by tearing down the
house now on Rattenbury street.
Council granted the permit; subject
to the W. P. & T. B. A. T, Dales
for damages caused to his car on one
of the bad roads in town. Council
will take this up with their insurance
agent.
A memorandum' from the Depart-
ment of Public Welfare relative to
medical services also one pertaining
torelief administration were mead.
There was also a memorandum from
the secretary of Association of As-
sessing Officers of Ontario, These
were all tabled
The Finance Committee reported the
investment of $5,000 of the Sinking
Fund surplus in the 4th Victory Loan.
Reference was made to the reduc-
tion in relief costs by councillor Bute
ler.
Birthday greetings were extended
to Councillor Agnew en his birthday

for the month of May by Bert Fitz-
simons. Mr. McDougall '• is in hospital
undergoing an operation,
Councillor Trewartha reported for
the street committee, which had ac-
complished quite a lot of work during
the past month. He suggested mark-
ing the street parking lines and an
inspection of all streets by full coun-
cil, with a view to gravelling, and cold
patch repair.
Councillor Agnew reported for the
property committee. The local com-
pany of the Reserve Army' wish to
use the fire hall and council chamber
as a cook house and dining hall after.

Friends and relatives extended

the guest of her niece Mrs., B. Ward
Clinton, who gave a dinner party in
her honour. Mrs. Cui7more usually
spends the winter months with her
niece, Mrs. John C. Snell of Exeter.

Navy League Meeting

Sgt. Percy Brown
Seriously Injured
Sergeant Percy M. Brown, wireless
air gunner, .has been admitted to a'
Military Hospital in S'cotlan'd because
of severe burns to his face and to his
hands as a result of flying operations
overseas •on April 21st. No .further
particulars about .the accident:. have
as yet been received; but last week
Mrs. Ronald McDonald of town, re-
ceived a cablegram from her brother
stating that he was • progressing fav-
orably. •
Sgt. Brown has been overseas since
the first week in January this year
but it is liot known whether his in-
juries were received during combat
duty or on a practice flight. Ordinary
Seaman Lorne. Brown of St. Hya-
cinthe, Quebec, but whose home is
in town is a brother. -Sgt. Brown's
mother, Mrs. A. S'. Inkley now resides
in Toronto but was a former resident
of town, where the family are very
well known.

to soldiers in Canada are attaching
only a three cent stamp. It is only
when letters are addressed to mem
h ers of the armed forces overseas
that the old three -cent rate applies.
The rate to addresses in Canada,
whether to soldiers or to civilians is
four cents.

Tires s Stolen from
Seaforth Car
The car of Dr: P. J. Beckely, local
dentist, was stolen early Friday morn-
ing and when recovered the four.
tires were missing, It is believed' the
car wee taken from beside the house
and towed' into the country where
the tires were taken. The attempt to
get the spare' tire which ;was in the
locked trunk was unsuccesssful. The
car was found by Oliver Wright •about
three miles northwest of .Seaforth
about 8 o'clock Friday morning, and
he reported• it to' County Constable
Helmer Snell, of Seaforth,' who is in
vestigating -Huron Expositor.
