engineer on his way to a job in Mex-
ico, gets as far as Texas, where he
is ,given a ride by Mona Lee Meson.
They have an accident, and Gary is
seriously injured,. Mona Lee takes
him to her home. 'There he finds
two: reasons for ne ,going on to Mex-
leo—Mona Lee's daughter, Adelaide,
and evidence of oil on the Mason
ranch. Harvey Mason, determined
to put down a well, -goes ahead despite
Gary's protest and the crooked efforts
of his ronin -law, Oliver Kimball, to
stop him. When 1 inrbail tells Mason
that Gary is an agent for Republic,
a large company, Gary leaves. But
when Mason is suddenly called, to
Virginia he persuades Gary to re-
turn. Mason leaves orders to stop
drilling at 5,000 feet, but now Hickey,
who is in charge of the crew, has
offered to risk his awn money to eon-
tinue the drilling. He has persuaded
Mona Lee and Gary to sign, an aggre-
ment authorizing hhn to go ahead.
Gary still held, back.

you—you can pay me whatever you
think I'm worth --but this is your
idea. You'll be financing it and tak-

v
Fire Extinguisher
Also Insecticide.
Many an airman owes his life and
the preservation of his aircraft to a
very versatile chemical called methyl
bromide, which was known' on. this con-
tinent in peacetime mainly as an in-
seetieide. Besides itsability to destroy
insect pests, methyl bromide was dis-
coveredto have some remarkable qual-
ities as a fire extinguisher which
make it superior to litany better fire-
fighting clsemidals for use in aireraft.
Its main advantage is lightness of
weight since extremely small quan-
tities of the chemical• axe needed and
the low worldng .pressure required
obviates the neeessity,for heavy steel
cylinders, In addition methyl+: bromide
is a non-conductor of electricity and is
very effective in smothering fires in-
volving highly volatile liquids such as
the high octane fuel used inbomber
and fighter aircraft.
.A.11 the methyl bromide fire -fighting
equipment being made in Canada at
present is going into R.A.F. and R. C.
A.F. aircraft and the chemical itself
is under strict control, But it is in-
teresting to note that in England, in
addition to its use in gasoline -driven
vehicles of the army, air force and
adtniralty, it has. been widely used to
meet many industrial fire hazards
Whatever its future in Canada may
he, it is safe to predict that, having
won its wings in war, methyl bromide
will retain and enlarge its role as a
fire fighter in peace and will never
again be thought of exclusively as a
killer of insects .
