On Wednesday a congregational
, meeting of the Presbyterian churches
of Smith's Hill, Blyth and Auburn
was held in Knox Church Auburn with
a view to calling a minister to fill
the vacancy, created by the remov-
al of Rev, A. M. Boyle to' Caledon
East. After some deliberation it was
decided to extend a call to Rev. A. D.
Thompson, B. A., D. D., of Brookfield
'F.Eh. Dr. Thompson was heard here
recently as a candidate and was re-
ceived quite acceptably.

Death of Mrs. Ralph Stephenson
The community mourns the pass-
ing of the late Mrs Ralph Stephen-
son whose death occurred. at SeaforthMemorial Hospital on Sunday. Dec,
20th following a long illness of sev-
eral months of a heart condition. De-
ceased was a woman of more than
ordinary intelligence, having taught
school in her younger clays and was
also captain of the Salvation Arany.
She taught school in the Canadian
West as' well as in Ontario. In church
and missionary work she had few
equals and her cheery disposition and
hearty hand shake always made her
welcome in all circles. The funeral
was held from the United Church
on Tuesday afternoon conducted by
her pastor Rev, Reba Hermwho -paid
high tribute' to the life of the deceas-
ed, Two of her favorite hymns were
sung "Safe in the 'Arms of Jesus"
and "Jesus Lover of My SOW." She
was born in Hibbert Township. Her
maiden, name Isabell Fell. In 1916
she was united in marriage to Ralph
Stephenson whd mourns the loss of a
kind and loving wife. She is sar-
i/reed by one; brother and .one sister.
The pallbearers were George and Al-
fred Johnston, Lorne and. Harvey
Coleman, Ed. Foster, and George Reid
her own choice. Floral tributes were
many and beautiful. Interment in

Bayfield cemetery.

of Olinton's badminton team defeated
Ma the Western University team by the

matches were played on Tgesday
Dec. 14 at the Air Force Drill Hall.

Clinton in 3-3 Tie
The local intermediate hockey lea-
gue started off with a hang when
the Sky Harbour team met the R.A.
F. boys of Clinton in a regular hoc-
key' fixture at Goderieh last Tuesday
night.
With a good crowd presentthe
boys put on a real ding dong battle
ending in a three all tie which could
Biot be broken in ten minutes over-
time.
During the first period Sky Har-
bour had a slight edge on shots on
goal but with only'five minutes left
to play Dungavell scored for CIin-
ton.
'In the first minute of the second
period Yarnold scored a neat goal
on a pass from Richards to tie the
score. Then with man short Sky Har-
bour scored again on a breakaway
by Riley..
In the third period both teams
turned on the heat with fast rugged
bacleey despite the poor• ice with
Randy of Clinton tying the score on a
pass from Clark,
With five minutes to go Clark .scor-
ed .on a long shot to put Clinton ahead
but the lead was short lived when
Richards pushed in the equalizer with
only two minutes lef 1.

MRS. WELLIAM HI•LES
We regret to chronicle the death of
Francis Elizabeth . (Bessie) Porter
widow of the late William Hiles which
occurred Tuesday at the home of her
daughter Mrs. Norman L. •Carter, No.
8 Highway, Tuckeramith where she
had spent=the past few months of her-
failing
erfailing health. She was in her 81st
year and was born in Devonshire,
England in Feb..2, 1862 a daughter of
Henry and Maria Porter. She came
to Canada at the age of twelve and
has been a resident of Clinton and
vicinity for the past sixty-nine years.
In October 1925 she became the wife
of the late William Hiles, who pre-
deceased her two years ago.
The late Mrs. Hiles was a faithful
member and worker of Ontario
Street United Church, Clinton, until
failing health prevented her from tak-
ing an active part. She was interested
especially in the missionary and tem-
perance work of the church. She had
a beautiful Christian character which
endeared her to large circle of friends.
There survives, her daughter, Mrs.
Norman Carter and two granehildren,.
Joyce, Seaforth and Aubrey Hiles
Carter, Toronto.
The funeral takes place at 2 •p.m.
on Thursday in Ontario Street Un-
ited Church, Clinton, conducted by
Rev. G. G. Burton. Interment will
take place in Union Cemetery Blytlr.

ERN.E:ST F. JACKSON
The host of daily callers at the
newsstand. in Stratford of the Cana-
dian National Institute for the Blind
learned with regret of the passing
early Monday morning of Ernest' F.
Jackson,0who had operated the stand
for the past three years. Mr. Jack-
son had been in failing health for
the past four years and: had been
confined to bed for the last six weeks.
Born in Clinton 60 years ago, Mr.
Jackson was the son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Isaac Jackson. He was mar-
ried in Detroit 26 years ago to the
former Lena Marshall who survives.
After his marriage Mr. Jackson oper-
ated a grocery business in Hensel!
for nine years before going to Strat-
ford to become an employee of the
Whyte Packing Company. He became
blind about three years ago and it
Was then he became the operator
of the newsstand at the corner of Al-
bert and Downie street. Here his kind
ly manner gained for him a wide
circle ,of friends. Surviving are his
wife, One brother. William in the west,
and two sisters, Mrs. Willispii1yslop
of Detroit and Mrs. John Peel' •of
Buffalo. Mrs. James Livermore of
Clinton is a sister-in-law.
The funeral service was held Wed-
nesday afternoon at 'three o'eloek
when Rev, David Wren, Minister of
Central United Church, officiated. In-
terment was made in Clinton ceme-
tery.

Miss McLennan was the oldest child
of the late David McLennan and Bar-
bara Cunningham McLennan and the
oldest sister of the late Professor Sir
John Cunningham McLennan, K.B.E.,
Born in Glasgow Scotland, on April
10, 1865, she came to Canada with her
mother in 1866, to join her father who
had come out to this country the pre-
vious October. Their destination was
Ingersoll in Canada West. The depart-
ed woman was educated in two vil-
lage schools in Huron County, Exeter
and Blyth, the Clinton High School
and the Clinton;Model School. In 1904
she sailed for 1ngland and Scotland,
from Boston travelling alone and af-
ter a stay in the Old Country re-
turned home via. New York,
The father of Miss McLennan died
in 1897 and her mother passed away
in 1916. From then on management
of the fancily home devolved upon the
now departed woman.
Miss McLennan was a member of
Knox Presbyterian church, the Strat-
ford Country Club, and the Women's
Canadian Club. A brother W. E. G.
McLennan, Toronto, survives.
The body rested at the Greenwood -
Gilbert Funeral home until the ser-
vice Saturday night, with Rev, C. S.
Oke officiating. Interment was made
in Toronto on Monday.

MISS S'OPHIIE ZAPFE'
The death oceurred in Kitchener -
Waterloo Hospital on Saturday'after-
noon, December 26th, after a lengthy
illness of Miss Sophie Zapfe, eldest
sister of John J. Zapfe of Clinton. Al-
so surviving are two sisters,. Miss
Grace Zapfe and 11iss Ethel Zapfe
of Kitchener and one brother, Norman
Zapfe, also of Kitchener. •
The funeral was held on Tuesday
with interment in Kitchener cemetery.

REV. JAMES A. HAMILTON
The death of Rev, James A. Hamil-
ton, of Brantford, occurred at his resi-
dence early Tuesday morning, Decem-
ber 22nd.
Rev. James A. Hamilton was the
youngest son of Mr. Alexander Y. and
Mrs. Hamilton who came from Sat -
land to Canada in the pioneer days of
Brant County and settled near Onon-
daga.
He received his' education at the
Brantford Collegiate, Toronto Univer-
sity and Knox College, after whieh he
spent two years in post-gractuate'work
in the Universities of Edinburgh Scot-
land, and'Hiedelberg, Germany.
On returning , home lie entered' the
ministery of the former Presbyterian
Church, his first pastorate being at
Delhi and Lyndedoch in. Norfolk coun-
ty. Later Mr, Hamilton had charges at
Londesboro in Huron County rand at
Leamington.
Owing to ill -health he was forced
to leave the ministry and for seine
years was headmaster of High
Schools at. Beamsviile, Glencoe and
Milton.
When he retired to Brantford he
rejoined Zion church, where his fath-
er had been one of the. first elders
and which he had known so well as
a boy and young man, This congrega-
tion honoured' him by malting him one
of the elders and as long as his health
V permitted, he made many calls on the
sick and shut-in members of Zion.
While at Delhi and Lyndedoch he
married Miss Anna L. Cox of Hain--
ilton who only lived for a few years,.
after the marriage. He is survived by
