had .n rver met. In fact Mrs. Brown
and Mrs: Cameron had only seen each
other two or three dines when,.by ac.
cident, in 'the course of their house-
hokt duties, they happened to, be at
their- windows at the:same time and
,caught fleeting glimpses of each other.
at long renge,:
Both Mr, Cameron. and Mr. Brown
were fond of delving in the earth -fife
ter the clay's work :down town. Mr.
Brown inclined more'totvard growing
Vegetables., but Mr. Cameron believed
that he -could obtain more mental and
just as much physical protlt from
growing flowers and -win satisfied to
buy -his Vegetables in the shops, Mre.
Cameron often wished that she could
go into Ler .neigh-me'e garden and pick
e -nice fresh salad' for dinner, Mrs.
Brown, on the other hand, more than
once felt like telephoning M•s. Camer-
on to ask for bouquet of her favorite
flowere -which bloomed so • freely In,
the Cameron garden: .If the. two neigh-
bors had known one another- perhaps
they would have exchanged not only
garden prodlets'but ideas and the
course of the lives of the persons of
ons family might have run in a differ-
ent ohdnnel.•
Mrs, Cameron and'Mrs: Brown were
about the same age, somewhere be-
tween thirty-five and forty. Both had
bexiie several children and they were
in what is ordinarily called 'Comfort•
able eircutnstances." They were
equally intelligent but of somewhat
different temperaments, Mrs. Brown
was a woman of deeleien, inclined -to
act .quiekly: when she had ence made
up her mind, Mrs. Cameron tended
to take things mbro easily and to put
off till to.morrow what did not seem'
at the moment to be of importance.
About five years ago Mrs. Brown,
while recovering from e. serious ill-
ness, had her attention drawn to • a
slight swelling oe her left side.
"It ,may be nothing,". said the nurse,
"But then again.it might be spmething
tinct ehould be given' attention. If I
were you'I.should have the doctor look.
at It the next time: he comes in."
The doolor was consulted and atter
an examination said;
'I hate to advise an operation in
.such an apparently trivial ailment as
this might seem to be. But then all
;these growths have vary small begin-
nings. With your permission 1 will
ask a specialist to consult with me
and we can than make up our minds."
The consultation was held; the re-
suit was an.' operation and the small
growitir was .removed. To makeas
surarlee doubly euro the area. operated
on was treated with .radiuni,,and-as
the operation took place five years
ago, and no further development has
taken place int must be concluded that
the growth was either not of 'a seri-
ous type or that it had been cured by
the, operation.
Curiously enough, about a "year
Miter Mrs, Cameron noticed a small
lump under her right breast Itseem-

therefore, Should -,this particular lump

went on with her life `iis though noth-

The swelling did, not go down,
though it -did not enlarge appreciably
on the surface. Bat, at the end of the
year -Mrs,' Cameron vas decidedly off
cola... This change was "so gradual that
the family and her Ifmrnediate friends
and relatives did not, notice it, ,or if
they aid were too considerate to make
any'comment. She had lost her ,color,

creasingly difficult to drive .herself' to
