this village, died Monday afternoon
after a ,brief illness, following a
stroke suffered on. Friday. Mr, Proc-

youngest. but ono of a family of
eleven. His •great grandfather came
to Canada from Scotland shortly after
the defeat of• the forces of "Prilice
.Charlie," under- whose 'banners he
fought, and settled at Plato; N:S. •

say regarding, Mr. Grant:
"Mr. Grant came to. Winnipeg, then
Fort Garry in 1874. For Many years
in anant of Winnie en-

gaged in insurance work, but rook up
his permanent residence in this city
in 1889 as western inspector of the
London & Canadian Loan. ,company,
and at the termination of his engage-
ment with then; became the manager
of the Federal Life Insurance & Loan
company in the west, with Winnipeg

tired. '

hensive report of his work at. the

the action of the Public Utilities Com-
mission in refusing to accede to the
demand of the town council to hand

department, intimating that in future
there would be no surplus.'
Mr. Trewarthaa, asking foe and tie-
ing granted an opportunity to reply,
said' what the council demanded, was
but their legal right and that. Mr.
-Gibbings' threat about a deficit
was unbecoming. Ilei said had he
known "what was in • Mr. Gibbings'
mind he would not have nothinated
him for the commission for another
term.
DIED IN WINNIPEG. -
The Brussels Post Last week had the
following: notice of the death of a
former Citizen, who was an uncle of
one of Clinton's citizens, Mr. W. A.
Grant:
"Word' was received in Brussels
Saturday morning that J: R. Grant, a
former ,well-known . resident, had
passed away that utornipg at his
home in Winnipeg, having been in
failing health during the past sum-
mer 'and .became so weak that ,Mrs.
W. IT,. Kerr and A. M. Kay of Strat-
forcl were sununooned West in Sep-
tember, but he recovered for a short
period. For many years he was
associated with the Federal Life and
also with their loan department in the
West. The funeral was held on Tues-
day afternoon, 'interment '.being made
in the family plot in St. John's conte
tery. He is survived by three daugh-
ters and one son, Mrs. W. H. Kerr.
Brussels; Postmaster A, M. Kay.
Stratfoinl, and Misses Agnes Kay and
Jennie Grant at home. Mrs. Grant
died about eight years ago, Mr,

court oil Saturday afternoon, Clare
Smith, aged 18, of Exeter, was re
mended to jail for a iveelc. Smith
faces a charge of uttering a forged
document. He was taken into cus-
tody at Loam. Officials of the
Standard' Bank in that town charge
that some time ago the youth, passed
a forged check on the bank, under the
alias of "John Simpson," When he,.
police alleged, made a second attempt
to pass a cheek lie : was taken into
custody,
