Without the door let sorrow lie, And if for cold it hap to die, We'll bury't in a Christmas pye, And evermore be merry. An -Old English Song. No season brings such joy as the Christmas time. Such home -gather- wigs, such exchange of gifts, of good wishes, such mysterious whisperings and plottings and plamuings amongst the members of the family, such a bubbling over of good spirits, such overlooking of shortcomings and faults and failings, go on in the homes at the Christmas season that one fain wouldhave the season last twelve months in the ,year, instead of a scant one month, or a week or s0. Sometimes we are inclined to think that the world • has grown old and careworn and has lost the fine, joy- ous spontaneity of youth. Then Christmas comes along, and we find we were just , getting in a rut, that the world is the best possible world, 6.3 Your PERSONAL Operator Telephone service is not produced for delivery in bulk, or to sten- daed packages over the counter. Every call is turned out "to order" — a custom service de- signed to meet personal needs, at a moment's notice. Your telephone operator is a mul- tiple personality. To her, your call means more than just a combination of switch- board manipulations. It is a call for personal service, to be answer- ed completed and supervised as your personal clerk or Secretary would handle it, 0 that the people in it are the hest of people, and that we love our friends and are quite willing to forgive our; enemies, if we have any, and- wish everybody a Merry Christmas with the greatest of heartiness` It would be a sad world, indeed, if we should lose out of it the "Spirit of Christmas," which is nothing more nor, less than the Spirit of the Christ, whose birthday we celebrate. Some people imagine that that fact is for- gotten in the general rushof gift- giving, and gift -receiving, of feasting and •of merry -making. If so it is a great mistake. 'Nothing adds so much to the joy of Christmas as the deep -down, heart -understood realiza- tion that this is the celebration of the corning to earth of the adorable and ever -adored God -Man, who came to reveal to us the love of God; to teach us how to love, God and each other. and to live the sort of life we should from the. outside to those who may on this old planet. The James - Lange theory of emotions' was that the body is affected first by the emo- tions, and then the mind. They said we did not feel bad arid then cry, but something tempted the tears to cone from our tear glands, and thenwefelt bad. On the other hand, something titilated us to laugh with our bodies, "It is one of the most natural things in the world. Yet, how many physicians are there who insist that their patients must laugh heartily a number of times a clay even though they may have to laugh without very. much reason. .Of course, if there is a good joke that . tempts to laughter, then the laughter is ever so much more spontaneous, is 'deeper, ventil- ates the entil-ates'the lungs, stimulates, the=iyeart and sets the blood .coursing through the body, and makes all the organs do their work better. To allow, pat- ients, who are su-ening from clepres sion of any kind or who are over sol; icitous about themselves, to go away from the physician's office without urging them to try the effect of laughter, -is to miss one of the most potent agents for good, so far as the physical being is concerned. "Laughter, however, not only does the body good, but it does the mind good. It has been said thatif you pull down the corners of your lips and keep them down, after a tithe you feel as glum inside as you look and then we felt ';joyful and free - hearted interiorly. Day. The mother who fails to impress upon her little ones early in 'life just what Christmas really means is cheating them out of a very great deal. The young, tender hearts of the children take in so readily and so easily the; significance of the beauti- ful truth, so much more quickly than in later years'and once learned it is never wholly forgotten_or out -grown tell them the story; read it in the beautiful language of the ancient writers; fill their young minds with it and make then see and understand that we rejoice and give gifts and sing in honour of the great first. -Christmas Gift to the world. Some people think the children of this age and in these prosperous times.. re- ceive too much, that they grow sel- fish and exacting. If so, it is the fault of the parents, principally the mother. She should teach them the true meaning of Christmas. I like the idea of going to Murrell on Christmas morning. I like the idea of singing happy songs in His own„house on that day' 'A11 denom- inations do not make a practise of this. But this year all may do so, as Christmas comes on Sunday. We may arrange the Christmas decora- tions, the holly and the mistletoe, the candles and the bells; we may spread the Christmas:feast and set the gifts for each member of the family in order. Then on Christmas morning we may arise and first go up to the House of God and give thanks to Him. sing his praises with joyous voices and come home with a greater real- ization of the true meaning of Christ- mas. Do not let us lose the strength, the happiness and the satisfaction of such a realization from our lives. If we do we shall be immeasurably poorer for it, REBEKAH YOU CAN LAUGH YOURSELF , WELL Laugh and grow fat! A piece of advice which has the merit of anti- quity if not of truth. Most of us have known men and women of lean and cadaverous aspect in whom con- stantly welled up a ceaseless flow of bubbling merriment; of chuckle, of jovial cachinnation which was good to hear.
