What about next year ? • This "Summerless" summer }instil' been so bad. Did anybody say any- thing about a winterless winter ? * * s * The "Long Vacation" is just about over and schools which do not open today will open on Tuesday next. " If the Conservative Party fails to select the best man available for lead- er at the Dominion convention to be held in Winnipeg in October it will not be for lack. of advice. The summer M over, today being the first of September, the first month of autumn, but it has been a very pleasant one and we shall hope for the best from September and Oc- tober. North Huron is in the thick of a three -corned election contest, the ef- fort to bring about an agreement be- tween the Liberals and Progressives having fallen through., It, looks like anybody's fight and ' nobody knows how it win go until the votes are essr*d. • 5.555 "If all drivers used only common sense and ordinary courtesy," re- marks a Member of the eXecntiVe of the Good Roads Association, "the ac- cidents on our highawys -would at , once be reduced to ,a minimum." Yee, but hoW-can`they, if they do not possosa either? * 5* 5. •The News -Record is being 'con- gratulatea upon the fact that an editorial published in its Confedera- tion number came in for honourable mention 13'y the National Celebration Committee, which offered three med- als, gold, silver and bronze for •the three best editorials bearing en the subject of Confederation. We did not win any of the medals, but, con- sidering the excellence of -the editor- ials winning these we feethat it is some honour even to come within • hailing distance of them. The gold medal went to the 'W.olfv1Ile (N.S.) Acadian (those bluenoses- ara a brainy M), the silver medal 'cameo to Huron, Editor Robertson -of the, Goderich Signal winning it, while the bronze medal goes to the Orin% Packet -Times. „ * 5 * The Walkerton Herald and Times believes in giving honor where honor is due and has the following to say about volunteer firemen: "No organization gets more kicks than a volunteer fire department. When there is a fire, minutes seem like hours before the water is turned on. People are quick to criticize and slow to praise. But the firemen work as fast as they can, with meagre and poor equipment they disregard their own safety, their own comfort, and, while the critics look on, they go inta , burning buildings, get, smolted up and perhaPs ijnre -themselves, all for the honor of serving us in defending our property. Think of these things when you go to the next fire. Slap' the Chief on the back and tell him the boys did fine." • After a small 131aze which occurred in Clinton one afternoon this sum- mer the -writer notie6c1 hanging on a' line in his -garden the business suit woro by one of the firemexi. It was apparently almost a total -wreck, hav- ing been drenehedwith water and spattered with mud and grime and ashes. This young man heard the call and rushed to the fire without being able to don proper clothing and without thinking of loss or inconven- ience to harnself, The gentle art of . • criticising public servonte is one - easily ocquired„ and costs the critic courses, etc,, putting in their long summer vacation in hard study, fit: ting themselves for more important positions, or just for the pleasure of added knowledge. This summer the. Ontario Depart- ment of Education arranged for a course in. oral French at Sillery Con- vent, Quebec, P.Q., which a number of teachers took advantage of, spends ing the summer with educated French people, hearing French spoken by cultured tonguee and having such an opportunity,of learning to so speak it as oever came their way before. These young people not only had. an oppor- tunity of studying the French lang- uage under favorable circumstances but they also had an opportunity of becoming acquainted with the natives of our sister Province, with their hab- its: and customs, wbich do not come to all of us.
