He has gone to his reward. - But perhaps another old neighbor, ' "7-U" Brown no doubt dropped in for a game of poker with the heir to. Britain's- throne. And Joe Brown could greet the prince as "old-timer" himself, for eight, years have elapsed since George V.'s eldest - son purchased the Bedingfeld prop- erty near 'High River and: added his own brand •"E.P." to -the long list in the Western ' brand book. Perhaps the Prince of Wales will remind .his kid brother, Prince. George, that the latter is still a "tenderfoot," and warn hon about husking hates. Back in the early days it was that Col. )3edingfeld and "his handsome wife carne out from England to set- tle in Alberta, 'The 'retired 'army of- ficer little thought as he chose a love- ly snot _in the foothills that he was. founding: a home for a future Ring of England. That was away back in the'. old days whien 'bull trains and stage coaches with six horses lumbered over the, MacLeod Trail. 'At`the col- onel's death his son, Francis Norton Bedingfeld, inherited the property, specializing in heavy horses. A splen- did type^ was .Prank Bedingfeld--a' Combination:: of 'the aristocratic Eng-. W'es to n plainsman on and the r lishxn . and his tall wiry figure was well known. in Calgary 20 years age. He .died in England shortly after the sale of his ranch. `a. When the prince -sees his snug, bungalow nestling among' the poplars on a knoll above the - cool, sparkling waters of ;little Highland River he surely feels at home., It is one of the loveliest iodations in Alberta. To the east the country melts into the plains. Westward the green hills merge with the forested'lower" slopes•of the Roche- ies, when look close, enough to .touch Rainbow trout, inhabit the adjacent. streams, wild ducks.'; swarm in the sloughs,; and prairie chicken, grouse and Hungarian patrdge' lurk in the brush ofithe coulees. The present bungalow, much larger. than the old homestead, is bordered with beds of old-fashioned flowers— phlox, candy tuft, ;-forgetmenots. pe- tunias and .canterbury bells. Trim lawns gird. it ' and gravelled • walks lead to its entrances.,, The farm build- ings are beautifully white. But in the main it looks like other ranches with its log ktchen, rainwater barrel, and ducks and 'thickens scratching for scrans in the backyard: The old tog • house ; has beet- incor- porated;as a dining -room, and on its cream -colored interior -walls the, *sole 'adornment'.is a livestock calendar and. a' "metto" bearing the text, "As for file and my house, we wll ,serve the 'lord.—Joshua xxiv.. 15." A small china cabinet and a square' dining - table with`' six light oak chars are the main furnishings. Hard by is the prince'$ ,private sitting -room with tis huff -colored walls sparsely hung with pictures, its low wicker chains, gen- erous fireplace, davenport and;buffale rug. On itswalls are a picture or the prince himselfsittingon his favorite steed, Forest ,.Witch; two prints of ned'Tndidil pi The neighboznx'°'',bBdiooii of the 6. Prince is just large:'eneuglito acoonx= nzodate a ;double brass bed, a walnut uniting desk, a'inahogany,dr,sser, a andsmall e si e e est of drawers a, d d h w table, ''ilhs' v al s are hoperd-blue and white and a small iron stove serves in Burd weather. There are four• other bedrooms,' andsince the Prince's, Iast visit, a commoc ions lounge has been added wilt hardwood floors and seven French windows. Sporting p eturos decorate its walls, Oriental- rugs. grace the floors of this room, which, is furnished in mission oak.: A huge, fireplace .bears the initials 'E,P," worked into" the masonry' and twb large German brass shells form the bases of the.floor Tamps, whose stents are worked in a maple leaf design, ' Despite its comfort, and the fact. that a corner of the ranch Yard has tablas to make .a "picnic ground for visiting ranchers .and tourists when the. Prince is absent, the S.P. is no' `dude ranch" such- as one raids :for "drug store cowboys" in the American West. Under the management of W, L. Carlyle, who goes to 'England'. yearly to consult the Prince and buy stock, the place isrun on business, lines. Alt' the foundation ;stock leas; been imported frorn, the royal farms in England., There, are at present on the ranch 125 Shorthorns, 140.'Ilanip- -shire and Wiltshire sheep,• ':35 Dart- moor ponies, ' 12 Percherons and 15 Clydesdales. The distribution; of stock from the prince's ranch is helping to improve the breeds of Western Can- ada, "This is, a wonderful country, 1 should like to have a :place•here my self!" exclamed the Prince of Wales in 1919, 'as, astride a' cow 'horse for the first time, he, rode across _the. bunch -grass range, breathed the ex- hilarating air Of Alberta and gazed round -upon- the magnificent panor- ama .of -prairie and mountain, "Why, don't you?'''guoth Mr. Carlyle, "There, is a fine neighboring place' for sale." Forthwith, just like" many another. lad 'who has succumbed to the charm of the West, the heir to Brii'ain's throne became a . cowpuncher. And now, for the fourth- time. -Ithe prince has spent his all too brief holi- day among the cattle ranges, where he found his own snug hone awaiting him not far from -the ranch of Lord Minto and his Canadian -wife. On the "E,P." a future.King of England was ;able to forget for a space sneeeh- es, receptions and all the worries of his royal job. Here in the quiet of the foothills the only sounds were the gentle lowing of his herd, the rustle of the breeze throuirh the uoplars and the murmur of little Highwood or as it wends its way past the ranch house::. old Pork eapasi- Marriages'' - GREEN—LIVER11M'ORE—In Ontario Street United church, Clinton, on Wednesday, August 24th, by the Rev.
