British Investigator Believes
Temperature Rises to
300 Degrees.
A clespateh. from Leaden says:-
Tropioal climate and torrid. atmos-
pheres at an altitude of fifty mines is
the latest discovery of a British
Astronomer W, F. Denning, of Bris-
tol. 1Vir.-benning has made a life
etudy of meteors, having ated 29,000
of them since.1866.
By etalculating the speed of meteor
trails Mr. Denning has discovered that
hurricanes of 200 to 300 iniles' ve-
locity were common' of the Outer peri-
phery, and meteoric evidence has led
him to the conclusion that the temper-
ature at great heighte, which have
never been explored in this respect,
rises in certain regions to 360 degrees
(Kelvin scare).
Thus; despite our actual experience
of increasing frigidity as we else on
mountains or in aeroplanes, the legend
of Daeclalns seems not to have been
as unscientific we generally think.
Mr. Denning has now placed his ma-
terial in the hands of Prof. F. A. Lin-
dermann end Dr. Do,bson, lecturer on
'meteorology' in Oxford University, for
further investigation.
Mr. Denning, who is now in his.78th
year; discovered a new star in the con-
etellation of Cygnus 'in August, 1920,
making this, like -all his observatione,
in his own garden, without the aid of

There were 21,757 fires during the

"there is• a fire loss of 83 cents per
capita. This and the increase by 3-700-,-
