"How can' the daily papers afford
to pay such handsome prizes for stb-
scrlptions when their subscription
price is only two -and -a -half times
the price or your weekly," is a ques-
tion which publishers of newspapers
like The News -Record is asked, not' in-
ireciuently. It is;not because they
can publish the paper for the money,
as anyone who' has ever had anything;
to do with newspaper publishing
knows. ` The whole purpose of •btiikl-
ing the circulation of a daily of pro
vincial or national weekly is solely
for the incrdased advertising revenue.
There are many papers published in•
Canada which could easily afford to
send their paper free to subscribers if
the postal authorities would allows it,
in ordeeto qualify fel• the higher ad-
vertising rates. "I do ,not see," said
u a farmer to The News Record the
othear day, "how The can
publish for such a small subscription
fee." 'Clearly h . was thinking that
the paper mentioned was a bargain
' beside The News -Record, This roan
' knew nothing at all about publishing
a paper, -naturally, and he was not
aware that the paper in
question could afford to send
.. • him his paper for • a. tentip of
what it would actually cost to publish
it for the reason that his subscription
made a higher advertising rate pos-
•sble. All this contpetitioit from pro-
vincial and national papers makes the
lot of the rural weekly so much hard-
er. Tie rural weekly has a restricted
field and its advertising rates cannot
be boosted, as those of the provincial
• weekly. But, while the rural weekly
-tries to have its subscription rate bear
atleast t part of its publishing costs,
no paper published could exist on its
subscriptions. This is . a point not
generally realized by' subscribers and
that is what makes the publishing of
rural weeklies often a difficult and
• usually thanloless job.

ARCH tSFENDERS are not an
.L 9 orthopaedic freak - they are
elegant 'shoes made in the Acme of
Style and Quality. But they are also
made -with the patented feature'of a
spring support -La hand shaped insole
moulded on a true foot -form last,
Thus
your foot -arch is supported, not by a
rigid prop that is clumsy, heavy and cramping
but by the spring steel support concealed under
the insole, extending from the heel e tog i
r ht
under the Scaphoid Boric which is the' keystone
of your foot arch.
If you have the slightest degree oftrartble,
Arch Defenders will give you quick relief,
