This force is an important geological factor, helping to wear away the land, and'"carry much material out into the sea. The smaller and slower tides do little work of this sort. However, they deposit sediment upon the shore, producing formations known to geolo- gists act teral fiats. Secrets of Science. By David Dietz. Seventy-two per cent. of the earth's surface is covered by the oeeaneat the present time.' The depth of about half the ocean 'ranges from 12,000 to 18,000 feet. The rest ie conaiderably less deep with the exception of 'about 4 per cent. o6 the ocean areas in which the depth° ranges from 18,000 to 30,000 Leet. The total amount LI water in the oceans Ia estimated to be more than '8'00,000,000 cubic miles or about 15 times the amount of land which pro- trudes u ors shove sea level. All ocean water coutaiva mineral matter in solution. The chief minereel, as everyone knows, is ordinary salt or sodium chloride. It is estimated that the amount of mineral matter in solu- tion In the oceans is- equal in volume to about 20 per gent, sof all the land protruding above sea, level. There are three general movements of the watere of the ocean which make them important as geological agents— tides, currents and waves. The tides are due chiefly to the at- traction wbiah the moon exerts lipoit the earth, etre to the tides, the water rises and Italia twice in a Rale loss than 24 hours, On open shores the rise is only a few feet, but in many inlets it is as much as 60 feet. These large rapid movements loosen The coean currents constitute the broad and niassive flow of water in the occurs. They are due mainly to pre- vailing winds which in turn arise from the earth's rotation and the difference in temperature between the equatorial. region and higher latitudes. The currents do very little geolo- gical work directly. They are import- ant because they traneter heat, thus tempering. the climates in high lati- tudes and increasing the rainfall. In this way, the currents indirectly In- ereaee the processes which attack the rocks. The wavee make the greatest attack upon the land. Because of the Waves the omen le constantly eating into the continents and island`s and trimming off their edges. The landward march of the see Is sontetimnes several yarde a year in some places. In this way whole farms and even villages have in time been eaten away by the sea. The force ivith which the waves strike the shore in a gale is terrific. It sometimes is as much as 6000 pounds to the square foot. Next article — The Sedimentary Rucks, quite Co orful. "I want to tell you how I got this black eye." There fiourtahee in England to -day a -society which Is the oldest musical organization in the world.; but few outsiders have ever heard of its per- formances or are even aware of its existence. This le the Madrigal Society, founded to 1741. Ae Its name Implies, rte object has been always to cultivate a liking for madrlagal singing, and In an un- Iwolcen line of hietoricai meetings, it has been able to do to. An interesting reference regarding this old association Is to be found in the works of Sir George Grove, who gives' the quaint rules formed in 1748, M his big m.uslcai history. Ile belle that there were only sixteen members at first, and that the admission fee was eight shillings; and the annual fee tive'shi111ngs. Even if you are what 1s• -called a email eater the amount of feed needed. to keep you going for a year is con- etderabid, In that period you will eat 1201b, of meat and fish, 3781'b. of bread - attars, including other grainner such ea rice and oatmeal, a similar amount of -potatoes, vegetables, and fruit, be- sides Seine .20Lb.•of butter' and .cheese. :Added to these wall be rations of tea, sugar, mustary, pepper, seat, and so on. When you remember that there are some one thousand. six hundred mil- lion people in the world, the amount of food required to feed them all is colossal. Yet a hundred million peo- ple produce it all. These' plough and cultivate flclds', orchards, and gardens, reap or gather their 'rope, milk the cows, make the butter and cheese, and catch the fish. The case may be etted of one Ameri- can fami;Iy c'onsis'ting of a further, his four sone, a nephew, and a son-in-law. They run a large farm near Menne, in South Dakota. In 1924 these seven men produced, by their own labor,-20,- 000 abor,-'20,000 bushels of wheat, besides keeping and feeding nearly one hundred head Of cattle. The record of fishermen is even more wonderful than that of farmers. Europe and the United States between them require more than fire million tons of fish yearly, -while the total' number of men employed in the fisher- te5 of these countries is under a mil- lion. So each man is responsible for catching live tons of fish yearly. The British record is better than Wet, for fewer than 100,000 men take between them 958,000 tons of fish. If you put the value of fish ae, low as $90 a ton, each British Milrerman brings in about $850 worth of food yearly, or es Hutch ileh as' ie consumed by fifty peo- ple. MARCH WEATHER DANGEROUS TO BABY On Account of the Very,Sudden Changes in Temperature. Our Canadian March weather—one day bright, but sloppy, the next biue- tery and cold -1s extremely ]lard on children, Conditions make it neces- sary for the mother to keep tire little ones indoors. They are often con- fined to overheated, badly• ventilated rooms and catch colds which rack their whole system. To guard against these colds and to keep the baby well tilt the better, brighter 'days come along, a box of Baby's Own Tablets should be kept lit the house and an occasional dose given the baby to keep his stomach sweet and his bowels working regularly. Baby's Own Tablets are n mild but thorough laxative which never fail to regulate the stomach and bowels• and thus relieve colds and simple fevers and keep baby fit.
